Introductions

As the fire, stoked by the careful hand of a young boy, licked the newly placed ash log it let out a loud crack. The boy, who found this sound to be agreeable, smiled and gazed into the dancing flames. His head filled with images of adventure, excitement and prestige and he found himself at peace with the world.

But the boy grew into a man and put aside such childish things; for they were fantasies and nothing more. He focused on what had become important; work, worries and woe. It was only when the man grew to be an elder and the world, now a more familiar place to the man, slowed down for him to see, did he feel regret. He wished he had chased the dreams of his childhood and embraced the life that could have been. The man, angry with himself, found himself in turmoil with the world.

As he rested on his deathbed, the old man looked up and was greeted by the visages of his family. A young boy, his grandson, took the man's hand and looked at his grandfather's now failing face. The old man smiled through watery eyes.

'Follow your heart, my boy, and never look back.'

The old man then took a final breath, closed his eyes and awaited death. In his final moments, he prayed the boy understand his words and grow with them.

Mission statement

A Region of Tales is a roleplay set outside of the established canon for World 41 with the intention of breathing new life into the dying community. By setting itself in a small region and encouraging members to start storylines of their own, it hopes to increase activity on the server and ensure that W41's style of story-telling has a secure future. The roleplay itself will try not to restrict the actions of its members, as long as those actions are reasonable, and will hopefully tell a tale of how the actions of a few can shape a region's future.

OOC Rules

As with any roleplay, this one comes with rules:

-Above all else, Jagex's rules apply.

-Standard roleplaying rules (e.g. No Metagaming, No Godmodding, No Autohitting, etc) apply.

-Your OOC behaviour, attitude and actions are important and will affect your standing with this roleplay. It's purpose is to have fun and if it's felt your involvement will prevent that, you'll be excluded from its roster. Playing Devil's Advocate is, therefore, discouraged.

-Keep this thread on topic and do not participate in any attempts to incite arguments or derail it.

-A story application can be rejected for various reasons, as can a character application, but reasoning will always be given.

IC Laws and Rules

The laws of the region are flexible and up for change. At the start of this roleplay, they arelax in most regards but, as IC events occur, changes will be made by the law-makers of the region as well as adopted by its people. For more information regarding this, see The Region post.

-All religions are tolerated as long as they maintain peace among one another.

-To break the peace in any aspect, be it murder, theft, damages or other, is a crime. That said, the region has a policy regarding the use of privateers and, with the relevant papers, one may take lawful prizes without hinderance from the state.

-Taxes are, at this time, low and not a concern for most.

-Magic is tolerated as long as it conforms with the law.

Current Storylines

This post will outline the roleplay's current storylines (up to three) and state where more information may be acquired.

The Ancient Library
~ Adventure/Discovery/Combat

The newly arrived merchant named Wily (double L is banned lol) Wain is apparently not what he claimed to be. He is a Zarosian attempting to find an Ancient library of the same origin. However he is not the first to achieve so. A group of Zamorakians and another of the same folk have discovered the Ancient crypt and the magics within it. Now Wily wants to stop them from doing anything a chaos seeking mind would do.

For more details, see Page 11, post 6.

The H.A.M.M Trials
~ Adventure/Noir

Over the past months there have been a string of murders. All the victims being found in similar states, limbs cut off and hung by their intestines. Wanted posters have been posted in most towns, showing a sketch of the killer, and a reward of 200 silver for his capture alive, and 500 dead.

For more details, see Page 11, post 7.

Current Storylines (Continued)

Ore for a blacksmith
~ Adventure

Fen* Linford has been comissioned to make two exquisite weapons in both design and material. So he has decided to create a weapon of mithril. However, there are a few problems: Mithril is a rare material which can only be found at certain locations.

For more details, see Page 13, post 8.

The Stranger's tale
~ Adventure/Combat

With the sudden arrival of a stranger from the North, baring the mark of Saradomin and equipped in exquisite armour, comes an ominious tale of the intricacy of the church and a religious order.

For more details, see Page 15, post 7.

The Dragon Knights
~ Adventure/Combat

Arcadian, the prophesied Avakir, carries a great burden. He may have been crafted from birth to destroy a dragon and their psychological hold on his village, but one cannot kill dragons alone. No more than a newborn can make its own way in this world. There are those amongst us in our mortal world who would gladly aid in the noble effort to safeguard the realms of men against the horrors which take flight and breathe fire down upon them, the tales of which have existed for as long as we can remember them.

The Region

The region in which this roleplay will occur is that of South Asgarnia. To be specific, Port Sarim, Rimmington, the Sarim Farm, the Crafting Guild and Clan Camp. These locations will be, IC, rather close to one another (at most a day's journey between) in order to allow characters to be in various locations at nearly a whim's notice. Areas outside of this region should only be used as set pieces for storylines and will be much further away IC.

It's important to note that this roleplay will not deal with the notion of nation building.

This post will split up the region and explain its state at the launch of this roleplay.

Law

The region of Sarim is a Duchy of the kingdom of Asgarnia, the capital of which is Falador to the distant North, and is ruled by a local Duke who enforces the law of his king. That said, agreeable trade conditions, low tax and good harvests have led to a laxing on certain laws in recent years. Similarly, while Sarim is a vassal of the Asgarnian King, there is a large degree of freedom regarding rulership in the area and many see the local Duke as the true de facto ruler.

Religion

While Falador, in the North, holds a strong Saradominist sway and discriminates against other religions, Sarim does not. Given it's strong position as a prime trade post, it does not see fit to dissuade those of varying faiths from its service. Therefore, all religions have become tolerated by local leaders and, over time, the people have also come to accept the differing religions as long as peace is maintained.

Crime

Given the lax nature of the law in the region, those of criminal pursuits find Sarim to be an ideal base. That said, low tax and good trade have helped to eliminate the necessity for some to turn to crime.

The Region (Continued)

Races

Similar to religion, Sarim cannot afford to turn away business on account of one's race. All races are, therefore, accepted and protected by the law as long as they keep it.

Trade

Port Sarim, and by extention the rest of Sarim, houses a lot of trade and, in recent years, has grown into a major business point for most of the known world. Many see the region as a good location to start a business and expand outwards from.

Magic

The use of magic has, in more recent years with the acceptance of various races, become a more familiar thing to the people of Sarim. Given this, many have cast away their shrewd views on it and have come to accept it. That said, magic's potential for destruction means that, given the right circumstances, this view can easily be turned on its head.
