As the age of the POK wanes, at least in Asgarnia so far, I thought it might be interesting to look back at "The POK" over the years. Now, this won't just be some grand lecture by ol' varis. This is an open discussion, so I hope for some back and forth exchange of knowledge. I came into PoKs really in the middle of its history, so I can't speak to all of it, but I will try to sum up what I have heard. Be aware, I know very little of the history as I wasnt there and so I can only pull memories from hearsay over the years.

The First POKs

As far as I am aware, there are two main accounts for how the first POK came to be in w42.

-"The Falador Theory" (2009-2010?)
This theory goes that it was here, during the height of Falador freelance RP (on one of the various RP worlds at the time). That some unknown player became the first to give their character the title of 'King'. (Rumored to be Pyro. Though Pyro told me that.)

Pyro or now, whomever did it first may be forgotten, but that first tradition certainly stuck around far longer than they did.

-"The Ardougne Theory" (2009-2010?)
Another theory poses that some other unknown RPer(possibly a 'King Lucas') became the first player to name their character a fullly fledged 'King' in Ardougne. This same theory seemed to say that it was this same 'First King' whom Garth Downey first obtained Ardougne from through unremembered methods. Garth's family ruled for a time before the infamous Russia inherited Ardougne.

(Kel, if you're out there, I would be very curious to hear your side of the story.)

Frankly, I have no idea if either story is accurate, or whom the true 'First King' truly is. Perhaps you were there? This is an open dicussion, please feel free to post!

The Classical Era (2011-2012)

I personally mark the time of Russia's Conquests as the start of the 'Classical' era for one main reason. So many families and relationships were created in this time that still effected things into the modern day. I know a lot of you still active are from this time. Please feel free to share your stories or what you know from this age.

This period included some of the greatest heights of POK warfare, the infamous 'Land Claims Thread', and some of the most legendary events, groups, and events come out of this time. Just to name a few notable things;

-Russia conquers most of the Human kingdoms
-The Sicarius form for the first time(ish, really started before under Garth). Allied with Russia.
-aaaand The Sicarius Wars ensue. Neither group operated in good faith with the other, and conflict soon broke out. Russia gained the help of the White Knights and Claws of Peace(Whom had defected from the Sicarius). We have this war to thank for the "Teleblock and Pile" technique of character killings. I know I used it before. Been used on me. A classic for sure.
-The Vampyre RP was strong in this era, with many covens tracing their origins to this time and before.
-A great many noble families come from this era, quite a few which survived for long periods of time, and a number of them remain today.

The Late Era

I consider the end of this era and the beginning of the 'Late Era' to be marked by the great 'Worshiper Invasion' This is only because I feel it was around this time that the POK system began to take on a more complex form.

For most of history, POKs where generally military warbands whom battled among each other constantly. Many of us remember the old adage when "Falador had a new King every week."

By the time the Worshipper empire finally faded north, there was a dramatic difference in the frequency of war between then and the era before it.

However, I have work soon, so feel free to pitch in your own stories about the times!

I recall during the "Classical" times stuff was all over. We had multiple Player Owned Cities under different people all fighting and vying for control. If you didn't drill military into people, you didn't keep a kingdom.

I think of the Commonwealth (Empire) of Gielinor and Cleeves Kandarin when this time comes to mind.

It's also when I first started RPing, so I got plenty of stories.

As for before, I remember Howdia mentioning someone stepping in for King Roald in Varrock since he ruled so long. I recall hearing Loved Shadow's Varrock was 200 plus people strong.

And let's not forget the 31 war! We still have veterans (from both sides) in the community.

Princess Puppy Roaldyn(?), I believe. She might have been his niece or something? That's a throwback.

I got introduced into rp by running into puppy's varrock doing their thing. they used to update the time and weather through the cc while people rp'ed around the city at the same time. that was cool

Never got involved in the crazy POK politics back in the day but I remember fighting dark moon in camelot, and getting piled by sicarius in morytania. how did anything even function back then man

Just a clarification:

The "Pyro Theory" only actually relates to Falador (and by extension Asgarnia although people did claim some individual parts of it). Prior to what is recorded by Aztarwyn on the Wiki as W42's WW2 (WW1 was between the Union (Publicly Russia) and the Sicarius), the RP capital as it was referred to was unclaimable, leading it to be de facto ruled by the white knights.

The war ousted the white knights until just prior to the rise of New Haven and started the possibility of claiming Falador, but obviously not the idea of claiming land.

Loved Shadow's Varrock only had a handful of people (possibly like the monks of zamorak it had more members that did not RP). I'll mostly remember loved shadow for the time her cat leapt up and ate a c'bow bolt to protect its owner.
