In Fate of the Gods, Zaros enters our minds, and tells us everything, including this line:

"Know this - I will never lie to you. And in this place you would sense if I did."

With that in mind, he says that he saw the Mahjarrat as
"younger siblings and [he] sought to protect them."

But in Children of Mah, while he's in Zamorak's mind, he says
"You are nothing but glorified mercenaries, fighting for whoever is top of the food chain."

(I'd also assume the same rules apply to Zamorak's mind.)

So which is it? The former or the latter?

Or did he lie to us about not being able to lie when he's in our heads? (in which case, anything he says could be suspected as a lie).

Those 2 lines have very little in common and don't link toward anything. "Your god's dead next time he's in a world event. "

Yes. Even if he doesn't deal in total falsehoods, CoM pretty much confirms that Zaros' modus operandi is to tell people what they want to hear. And that's exactly what he did in FOTG. Whether or not it's truly a lie, by the strict definition of the word, is meaningless; the intention to deceive/manipulate is what counts. Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

Honestly even within FOTG there were some questionable inconsistancies that made it clear he was, at least, not telling the full truth. Yes, Zaros lied. It could be argued that he made a poor decision in the long run for immediate gain, and there's several reasons he might have done it.

Perhaps he wanted our immediate loyalty and to lock us in with our choice of helping him?

He might have disregarded our trust in the long run, feeling confident that, as long as he was revived, he wouldn't need the World Guardian? It's misguided and arrogant, yes, but Zaros does have an ego.

Or he might have simply acknowledged the long term costs, but felt the short term benefits outweighed these costs.
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

So, an older sibling can't get angry with a younger sibling who has done something to annoy/upset/betray him, and lash out with words? You can still care for someone but same mean things to them.

I'd probably stick up for my siblings right up until the point one of them stood before me with a weapon, with the intention of killing me. I think most people would react in this way.

umm Zaros were never their elder brother or acted like one. he was just trying control every single living being. he made empty promises to every single races. that's why people stood up against him vampyre, demons and Mahjarrats.

far as today goes, current Zaros is much more smarter and thinks alot before he does something. i have to agree with azzy with this one.

They pretty much contradict each other. One moment Zaros is like "the Mahjarrat and me share the same origin, I ought to care for them, the next he's like "I don't really give a **** about you guys, I pretty much own you all."

Both instances happened when he wasn't able to lie to us, yet both...truths contradict each other. Which one is it?

:(

Zaros why you do this? T_T

I served you loyally all this time and you'll still lie to me? >.<

On another note...

But in our heads, he still can't lie. That means, if he bends the truth, he can't do it too much ya know?

But we're the only one on the entire planet who can has the power to defy god magic. It's kind of dumb for him to disregard this fact IMO, and he's supposed to be so smart that he scammed Hostilius (the demon king) and got an entire army for himself.

The biggest red flag is factions. If you are Godless, he speaks of banishing all the Gods, but if you are Armadylean he speaks of co-existence between them all.

It's not certain, just a possibility. He has the most raw power out of all the Young Gods and may feel himself able to handle them all. He is ridiculously overconfident when it comes to the Elders as well. I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if his ego has blinded him.
