It also establishes that Nex was imprisoned in her palace rather than just a random icy cave (indicating a controlled retreat as opposed to being outright forced out of position) and that Saradominists once again built over a preexisting Zarosian structure.
If I'm not mistaken, the lore people have known both those things for years

I don't know, I believe Nex was prisoned when she went to mess with the ritual of the mahjarrat, to ensure Zarosian mahjarrat would have the upper hand I always thought that that Saradominists lured Nex inside the cafe.

Hm. Lovely lore that elaborates on or establishes locations whilst hinting at what content we could engage with there (Shadow Realm leviathans caught my eye in particular).
.

I wonder if the Ambassador is one of said leviathans, since Leng was mentioned, and Lore has a habit of connecting things like this.

Perhaps the Ambassador is... But Zaros appears to fear them, so they might be really powerful!

I don't think it comes off as Zaros being afraid of them more like cautious. They are obviously beings of great power. The best analogy may be KBD from RS classic days. Fighting 5000 fire giants for dragon helm was safer than venturing through the wild and defeating KBD, though possible far more risky.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Nex was sent to secure the area around the ritual site, but was attacked by saradominist forces that lead Nex and her army into the cavern where they put Nex and her forces into an enchanted sleep. So yes, they did lure Nex into the caves.

I don't think it's ever mentioned that Zaros is scared of the Leviathans though.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

Except that we now know that it wasn't just some random caves that Nex was lured/backed into. She was imprisoned in her own palace.

Rather than Saradominists building the ToLA around the incapacitated Nex, the entire temple might simply be Nex's old palace and Saradominists only took credit for it. It might even be the case that Nex's defeat might be similar to Hazeel's (the Carnillean led forces snuck into his home, slaughtered his servants and enchanted him) than the tale Ashuelot Reis tells us about them luring Nex into it.

Zaros said 'I created the stone of shadow from the essence of one thousand and one shadow cacklers from the shadow realm. Though individually weak, they are powerful in large concentration, but far less risky than hunting down one of the true leviathans that lurk in the deep places of that realm.'

This could mean that Zaros fears the Leviathans, Zaros used to be fearless, but after his betrayal he might have gotten slight fear, he released that he wasn't invincible.

I have to disagree with your interpretation. Keep in mind that Zaros used these power stones to create the Nihil, which happened prior to Zamorak's betrayal.

That being said, I don't think Zaros is afraid of these Leviathans per se (since he really doesn't seem to 'do' fear), as much as he is exercising appropriate caution when it comes to consider dealing with them. I mean, we already know that it is entirely possible for a mortal to match the strength of the gods (Hostilius) and that there are non-mortals who, whilst not gods, can also match them in power (Vorago).

We also know that while gods are capable of defending themselves it is also entirely possible for them to be killed as well (Zaros himself having either killed or effectively killed Loarnab) and that this can be done with entirely mundane objects if necessary (Bandos striking down Jododu).

All this comes together to indicate that these Shadow Realm Leviathans are powerful enough to pose a threat to even a t2 god, but are kind of like bees in that they will generally leave you alone unless you go bugging them.

It is funny that so much discussion is about the shadow leviathans since I considerd including them but thought this thread should focus more on Nex. I do agree that it is interesting that there are creatures living in the shadow realm and that Zaros doesn't want to confront one of them. I doubt we will meet a creature like that though.

It seems that the gods are not such a big deal after all. A few years ago we thought a god was near unstoppable but now it seems even a tier 2 god has a monster he doesn't want to mess with.

"there's always a bigger fish"
(darth jar-jar uses the force to possess the bigger fish and makes it eat the smaller but still gigantic one that's chasing them)

in the rest of the gods' defence, zaros barely wanted to confront loarnab

Well we know there are creatures of equal power that aren't gods themselves. Hostilius or however it's spelled was about as strong as a tier 5 god, same with the dragonkin.
