In this post I wanted to discuss the veil. It is mentioned briefly in a few places throughout the game. Mainly within the shadow reef. However there are other instances. The sections below will list what is known about the veil, speculation of its purpose, and speculation of its creators.

To start, we know the veil prevents Xau-Tak from knowing about Gielinor at all. According to Mod Raven's twitter reply, everything that has happened related to Xau-Tak on Gielinor, has come without him even being aware of the planet to this point. Spooky.

The veil can be pierced by performing Kranon's ritual. Which would tune the black stones to play the siren song. Those who follow Xau and Kranon describe the song as beautiful, while others such as Hanto describe it as constant screaming that will not stop.

The Obsidian tribunal dispatched 3 agents to assist Kranon with the ritual as they too wish for the veil to fall. This is so they may communicate with their master, likely also Xau-Tak. The agents hold 3 traits in their names that refer to either the priests that visited the Mwanu or the 3 lesser gods the Mwanu worship with Xau as the center figure.

The only other reference to the veil I could find in game is the soulgazer Ozharakha. He literally has the title "veil-ripper". There is signficance to this that I will explain in a section below.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

I. Source Material
Before diving into speculation, some background information on Xau-tak and its source material. Xau was originally an easter egg placed in the pirate quest series and other content worked on by Mod Wilson. Wilson informed us that Xau is heavily influenced by the Cosmic Lovecraftian deity, Cthulhu. For those of you unaware, Cthulhu is a cosmic horror of unimaginable power. His very appearance causes people to go insane.
Keeping with its lovecraftian ties, in 2018 a miniquest achievement called lovingly crafted was released to explain how the Mwanu came to be on Gielinor and their connection to Xau-Tak.
These ties are very important as they explain why Ozharakha has the title "veil-ripper".
Ozharakha is a servant of Ocularis, the first soulgazer who is a giant floating moon with an eye and a brain thats traveling through space. Returning to the lovecraft ties, Ocularis is likely based on Ghroth. Ghroth is a giant floating planet with an eye in its center that goes through space. Ghroth has one purpose, any planet it comes upon, it sings its siren song to summon a great old one (cosmic horror god) to destroy that planet. Ghroth fits well with Xau-tak's theme with both the song and appearance connection to Ocularis. Ocularis also has the appearance of one of the Mwanu deities and priests. So he is likely the bloated eye lesser god to Xau-tak.
Further connection of the soulgazers and Xau-tak is the place where soulgazers are encountered, Daemonheim. Daemonheim is an ancient abandoned Dragonkin castle. However, it has recently been used by Kal'Gerion demons in an attempt to summon the "hundred handed one" and use its power to reclaim Infernus. This attempt was stopped by the World Guardian.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

II. Purpose
The veil is in place seemingly for one very important reason, to prevent the total destruction of Gielinor by the many hands of Xau-Tak. But this does not mean it keeps him at bay, it appears to simply shield the planet from his gaze and possibly that of Ocularis and the tribunal. Xau is able to manifest in Gielinor briefly by use of portals. Ocularius is also able to send soulgazers and seekers to Gielinor through portals.

The next questions to answer are:
Who put the veil in place?
Likely not Guthix since there is no reference to him having any knowledge of Xau-Tak and the threat he poses. Another powerful being would have to do so.

Why is it in place?
This seems rhetorical but we must not forget, Gielinor houses the strongest beings in existence, the elder gods. They are wide awake and one would think it madness to attack such creatures.

Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

III. Speculation

The veil is put in place by either Zaros or the Elder Gods themselves to shield Gielinor from Xau-Tak. We know that the black stones work as a type of anti-anima. Xau-Tak may actually pose a threat to the Elder Gods who wanted to sleep peacefully and its likely they have used similar methods before.

The other theory is that Zaros would do it. Zaros spent a lot of time away from his throne. He is also very aware of Kranon and likely the master Kranon serves. This is made evident by the dialogue Vindicta has in Curse of the Black Stone. For all his flaws, Zaros does not want to see the perfect world destroyed. He is also aware of "something else" speculated by some to be the sixth elder god, Xau-Tak.

It is also possible that the parasite Guthix encountered on Renmark was Xau-Tak, and when he discovered he could not destroy it with even the Elder blade, he did the best he could and attempted to shield the planet from it. We know from Pieces of Hate that even the edicts were not strong enough to keep Xau-Tak out.

It is likely that should the veil fall, Ocularis will make his way to Gielinor first and, should he not be stopped, will sing the song that ends the world. If Jagex stays true to the source material, theres no way to stop/defeat a cosmic horror. Hiding from it is your only option.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Wouldn't Xau-Tak have to know about Gielinor? Didn't he reach out to Kranon, not the other way around?

To the contrary actually, Kranon, unknowingly, reached out to him. Kranon preformed a partial ritual on Ultven Kreath without knowing exactly what would happen and was pulled into the portal he opened where he met Xau and was changed.

I love how the Obsidian Tribunal has finally made an appearance. I think their master is not necessarily Xau-Tak, though.

Veil-Ripper Ozharakha? That's definitely an interesting name. Seeing how stalkers are already eldritch abominations in their own right, the connection makes sense.

Finally, I have no idea how Xau-Tak is unaware of Gielinor. He's literally been on Gielinor for a while. The Book of V notes that Xau-Tak's tendrils have taken root on Gielinor. Not to mention the black hands and stuff. The Ambassador's dying words are even "you only live because has not yet noticed you." Weird.
You can't read this signature. It's written in invisible inque.

Nothing wierd about another primitive life form amassed with stumbled onto artifact or other great powerty and getting fat on it and wanting more, more, more, more and... You guess it, more. Till one day they either eat too much and pop open or another being fires their lazor at em. hrrrrrrk

No but i see this mention of this v-person about so said roots of this xautious entity upon our rolling ball and would reckon they're proposed as some sort of a refer, merely pointing to aforementioned hands and legs via the portals and so forth other blackstone eaters. Aaaaaaaand here i sway away like the whatever but so i toss finaly midway conclusion of if Xau is indeed an elder that ate Tak and so forth that fortress, would make sense for the unawareness part as much as Jas and others didn't see us coming either eh? Eh!
