There is a woeful lack of guides on how to get scammed in RuneScape. It's sad. I've had too many people come up to me and ask, “How can I get scammed? I've been trying for weeks!” or, “I have a ton of coins I want to lose to a scam - can you help?” or even, “Finally, I just got a party hat! Now how do I lose it?”

The questions never end.

Stop asking and read. Here's how you get scammed in RuneScape.

1.)
That stranger is asking to hold your items. Don't worry, he's totally trustworthy - you can see it in the creepy way he's staring at you.

Give enough strangers your items and you won't have any more to lose! Then you'll never be scammed again!

2.)
Some random person is offering you tons of money if you'll just do a series of suspicious things. He's definitely only interested in helping you get money at his expense. Do whatever he says.

You know it's a scam, but play along anyway. That should end well, right? He's not expecting that at all, nope.

3.)
Someone is asking you to anti-lure a lurer. Go anti-lurer, go!

There's only a 99.99% chance that the anti-lurer is actually helping the lurer. You did want to be scammed, right?

4.)
Someone just showed you a max cash stack and he's offering you some of it. You just have to follow his intructions. What could go wrong?

Just don't ask him how he got that money – he won't tell you that he got it by doing the exact same scam he's performing on you right now.

5.)
If you have a rare item, don't ever become familiar with known scams and lures by reading pages about common scams (
HINT
).

That's okay, scammers aren't interested in your party hat anyway. You'll never be targeted as long as you walk around looking like this.

6.)
Don't watch your trade screen carefully. Bonus points if you let someone rush you through a trade so you won't notice that they switched items.

No, that's not an iron armour set. Promise.

Did I mention not to watch the trade screen carefully?

His other account really is at Camelot bank, honest.

8.)
Seriously, don't watch your trade screen carefully. Just trade all your items away.

(Are you getting the hint yet?)

9.)
Drop your expensive items when someone tells you to. (This method of getting scammed never fails!)

It's okay - you can outsmart the scammer after you've dropped your items for her. ( ... You didn't really need that item, right?)

10.)
You see that suspicious bot that's advertising that YouTube video? GO GO GO, follow the link to the phishing site that looks exactly like RuneScape!

Don't try to talk to the bot. It can't tell you that it's using an account stolen from the last person who tried to enter the giveaway.

11.)
You know how Jagex mods will always have a gold crown next to their name? Forget that tidbit, it's unimportant.

If "stranger danger!" alarm bells are going off in your head, ignore them. Always ignore alarm bells when you're trying to get scammed.

12.)
Basically, whenever a stranger
gets your hopes up but you have to do what they say first
, play along. Don't even think about reporting them or putting them on your ignore list.

Do whatever strangers tell you to and you'll lose your hard-earned items! (Just like you wanted, right?)

PS - I spent a lot of time working on this guide. I made it because a sarcastic guide (with pictures!) on how to get scammed might be more interesting to read - and easier to remember - than lengthy guides on avoiding scams. No, I don't intend people to take this guide seriously; it's just an alternative way of educating players on scams. I tried to avoid getting any more explicit on how scams work than the current Scamming Prevention Guide does. If there's anything that shouldn't be up there, let me know and I'll change it.

If you can think of any other good ways to get scammed, let us know here.
