Introduction

Welcome to the March edition of the Gielinor Globe, the RuneScape forums' very own monthly community newsletter.
All's fair in love and war.
That's what they say, and it has certainly been true throughout the past month in RuneScape. February is the month of love, with Valentine's Day on the 14th - but as you know, this February also saw the return of the old-style Wilderness.
So we held a number of events to mark Valentine's Day in some unusual ways! We called this event the Valentine's Day Massacre and you can read more about it below.
Our clan community continues to go from strength to strength and it has taken Free Trade and the Wilderness in its stride. Read on for an update about all things clan-related.
You can also learn about the latest competitions that we have been running - also with a Free Trade/Wilderness theme.
Last month we introduced some new features - the Social Networking section and the Forum Spotlight. These are both back this month and it looks like they are on course to become regular spots.
And of course we haven't forgotten about the usual monthly features that you've come to know and love. Read on for the Player Submissions, Quiz Quest, Caption Competition and Who The Zamorak? sections.
Thanks for reading the Gielinor Globe, thanks for playing RuneScape, and remember -
Have a great time, all the time! :D

Valentine's Day Massacre

Valentine's Day fell on Monday 14 February this year - so we organised a long weekend of death and destruction, spanning from the preceding Friday until the day itself. This festival of pain needed a name - so we chose The Valentine's Day Massacre.
Perhaps the centrepiece of the whole Valentine's Day Massacre weekend was the huge inter-clan 'Player-Killing Run-In' - you can read more about this in the Clan Update below.
The Massacre was not just for clans, though. There were plenty of opportunities for individual players to get involved. Highlights included several Wilderness raids led by J-Mods - check out the Bronze Wilderness Challenge for my personal favourite!
Of course, not everyone is interested in killing and carnage, and we certainly didn't forget about those players who consider themselves skillers rather than fighters. We set up the Quartermaster's Market so that they could get involved too. This helped fishers, smiths and herblorists sell their wares to the PKers. Free Trade gave savvy players an unprecedented opportunity to take advantage of the increased demand and make a lot of money.
That wasn't the only way for non-combatants to get involved in the action. One clan decided to cover Edgeville with hundreds of flowers!
All in all, we think our Valentine's celebrations were a roaring success. If you took part, we hope you made some firm friends and some lasting memories!

Competition Update

We ran two major community competitions in February. Both of them were designed to tie in with the Free Trade/Wilderness update.

The first of February's competitions had a Free Trade theme. Players were invited to guess how much GP would be traded in-game during the first full weekend that Free Trade was available.
The winner with the closest guess will be receiving an "I Brought The Wilderness Back" T-shirt like this one from the Jagex Store:

The prize shirt is currently making its way around the Jagex office being signed by as many J-Mods as possible! :)
The news post about this competition can be found here.

The second February competition was entitled Bring on the Bloodbath! and it involved guessing how many player deaths would be racked up during the first full weekend of the revamped Wilderness.
Again, the winner will be receiving a selection of prizes from the Jagex Store including a Wilderness T-shirt.
The news post about this competition is here.

Remember to keep checking out all of the newsposts that we release on the front page of http://www.runescape.com/ - not only will you have the chance to enter future competitions, but the newsposts are one of the best ways to keep up-to-date with what's going on in RuneScape.

Clan Update

It was a fairly low-key affair but I think you might have heard that we returned the Wilderness and Free Trade at the start of February!
As such, we've been Wildy-mad throughout the month in the clan community. Read on to learn about our "World's Biggest PKRI Weekend", part of the Valentine's Day Massacre events.
Not to be outdone were those who would rather celebrate friendship, camaraderie amongst clans and the lovey-dovey side of Valentine's ľ so we held our first "Clanentine's Week" to pair players up with the clan of their dreams!

PKRI Weekend
Over 12th-13th February we held an event to try and see if we could get the largest Player-Killing Run In (PKRI) going on across all worlds. Although we never managed to get one going on every single world at the same time, we still achieved what we set out to do by inciting carnage on the PKRI worlds that we designated! Over 50,000 players took part in the PKRI weekend at some point, making it a massive success. I'm sure someone out there has over 9000 sets of Rune Armour in their bank thanks to it! You can check out the official PKRI Weekend thread here.
As the PKRI was such a success, I'm sure we'll try to do similar things over the course of the year, although not all of them will be as bloody. We will be making sure that skillers, D&D groups, questers and all the other sections of the clan community will also be getting their fair share of the action.

Clanentine's Week
This was all about bringing players closer together and matching lonely clans to their perfect recruits. We had Clan Challenges to bring your favourite clan some chocolates and flowers, and the fantastic "Clan Ads" (not to be confused with Irish musical group Clannad) that you can see below in the Clan Spotlight.
My own poem didn't make the cut, however, which is quite a shame...
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Clans are really awesome,
So where are you?

And on that bombshell, we end our update for the month. We have even more planned for March, including clan celebrations (not the chocolatey kind) and our announcement of a Clan Logo competition with a surprise. Until next time!

Clan Spotlight

Each month we will be using this section to showcase original writing from the clan community.

This month's Spotlight is shining on the best entries we received for our 'Clanentine's Week Lonely Hearts' competition.
The idea behind the competition was that if a player happened to be looking for a clan to join, or clans were seeking new members, they could create 'lonely hearts'-style adverts to seek that perfect slayer, skiller, hybrid, pure, tank , clan, or whatever else fitted the bill!
The best adverts were then featured in the forums and on Facebook (click here and here).
The entries had to be creative, fun and original ľ the key things that would help them find their perfect match!
After perusing the 'Lonely Hearts' ads for some time we have now selected the winners! So without further ado:
1st place: Soulskryr
2nd place: Dr Nick 51

Player Submissions

Every month, we invite players to submit their own original works for inclusion in the newsletter.
This month's piece is a parable about trust, greed and hubris.

A Goblin's Trickery

by Eraser418
A man was strolling down the road and approached a small tent when he heard the voices of many other men. He moved closer to see what the commotion was about. The man came across a group of Elves who were gambling with a strange, old goblin. The man reached into his pocket, felt the heavy bag of coins and decided to give the game a try.
"You there, Goblin!" he shouted with confidence, "I would like to partake in your gambling game."
The goblin looked up at the man, noticing his bag of gold, and responded. "Very well sir. The name of the game is Pea-shell and the rules are quite simple."
The man smiled to himself. He had played this game regularly and had become very adept at it. The rules were very simple indeed. He would bet a number of coins and select one of three shells, after they were rearranged, in hope of finding the pea underneath.
The man said, with great confidence, "truly a game of great skill and observation." And bet a single coin. The old, frail-looking goblin leisurely rearranged the shells and told the man to pick one. The man's eyes lit up, upon finding the pea underneath the shell.
Noticing how easy it was to win the first time, the man bet five coins and carefully watched the goblin's hands as he moved the shells to and fro. Again, the man selected the correct shell. With his confidence bolstered, he decided to exploit the goblin's slow, relaxed pace and bet fifty coins this time.
"Feeling lucky I see," the goblin commented as he, once again, rearranged the shells. This time, however, the goblinĺs hands were a blur and shocked the man who then began to worry.
Carefully, the man picked a shell and let out a cry upon discovering it to be the wrong one. In a desperate attempt to win his gold back, the man bet the last of his coins and told the goblin to swap the shells.
The goblin's hands moved lightning fast - so fast, in fact, that it was near impossible to see his hands. "Go ahead," the goblin said, mockingly.

The crowd behind the man waited anxiously. He slowly picked up a shell, his hands trembling, sweat beading down his brow. His heart sank when he discovered that he had picked the wrong shell and lost; to an old, wrinkly goblin, no less.
Slowly, the man walked away from the tent with his head down low in shame. His overconfidence had cost him all of his gold. In the distance, he could still hear the faint cackling laughter of the old goblin.

If you would like to submit a piece of original writing to be considered for the newsletter, please feel free to email it to us at postbag@jagex.com. We can't promise to use every submission but we do read all of them. We look forward to receiving your contributions!
