<< New Runecrafting Method: Auriana Altar >>

The Wizard’s Tower has been busily working on a top secret project in the Essence Mines - building a rune altar to compete with the ZMI’s Ouriana Altar! The task won’t be easy, though, and they’ll need your help…enter a new Runecrafting training method!

Location: Enter any teleportation-based Essence Mine (so not Lunar Isle essence mine) and travel down the new ladder in the middle to access the Auriana Altar area.

To begin with, there is no altar! You have to construct it. This is Phase 1 of the training method.

~Constructing the Altar ~

Speak to Wizard Olmiss at the Auriana Altar area to learn more. She will also sell you different Runeoids, stones in a tetrahedron shape that are used in constructing the altar. The variants are Mind, Chaos, Death, and Blood Runeoids, sold for 10 gp, 100 gp, 1000 gp, and 10,000 gp, respectively. You can also get these rarely (in order of increasing rarity - rare, very rare, extremely rare, and awesomely rare) by mining rune/pure essence or on the GE. Each Runeoid has a Runecrafting level that is required to appropriately handle them: 1 for Mind, 25 for Chaos, 50 for Death, and 75 for Blood.

Once you have a Runeoid in your inventory, you can left-click Activate. You can only have 1 Runeoid activated at a time. When it activates, it starts a timer. This timer varies depending on the Trail that has been created for this Runeoid. (Trails are the term for the overall path the Runeoid must take.) Timers range from 3 minutes for short 1-leg Trails to 20 minutes for long 6-8-leg Trails.

You can right-click Scry on the Runeoid to get a strong hint about which altar you need to visit. Any of the Rune Altars around the world (including the Cosmic Altar) can be requested.

If you use a talisman/tiara on Mysterious Ruins, there is a high chance that the Runeoid consumes the talisman/tiara.

Upon arriving at the altar itself, Runic Orbs spawn all around the altar. You must run around and use the Runeoid (“Use”) to push the Runic Orbs into the altar. Once all of them have been pushed into the Altar, your Runeoid will glow and change. You need to Scry it again to see what the new altar in the next leg of the Trail is.

Just like a Clue Scroll, it is possible that the Trail takes you to an altar you don’t have the level to Runecraft at or have unlocked - if this is the case, you have no choice but to destroy the Runeoid and start a new one.

Complete all of the legs of the Trail within the time limit to have your Runeoid become a Enriched <Mind/Chaos/Death/Blood> Runeoid. Take this back to Wizard Olmiss and use the Enriched Runeoid on the Auriana Altar site to add a chunk to the altar construction. If time runs out before you finish the Trail, the Runeoid is destroyed and your time (and gp) is wasted.

Experience is gained in token amounts each time you push a Runic Orb into its respective altar. The bulk of the experience is gained when you use the Enriched Runeoid on the Auriana Altar. The proposed formula for the experience gained upon using the Enriched Runeoid on the Auriana Altar is R*T +L^2/2, where L is your Runecrafting Level, T is the number of steps in the Trail, and R is 50 for Mind, 300 for Chaos, 700 for Death, and 1500 for Blood Runeoids.

This gives the following estimated maximum experience rates at various levels (given each step of a trail takes about 3 minutes, estimated). It is also estimated that the average trail takes 6-8 steps and would take roughly 20 minutes to do in full.

Level 1: Not practical to use.
Level 10: 5,000 experience per hour
Level 25: 8,000 experience per hour
Level 50: 18,000 experience per hour
Level 75: 40,000 experience per hour
Level 95: 50,000 experience per hour

Adding a Runeoid to the Auriana Altar Plinth gives a certain completion percentage to the altar:

Mind - 0.5%
Chaos - 2%
Death - 5%
Blood - 12%

Upon reaching 100%, the Auriana Altar is complete and can be used.

~ Using the Altar ~

When the Auriana Altar is at 100%, it can be Runecrafted at. It can craft ANY rune that has a talisman or tiara. Use an appropriate talisman or tiara on the altar to craft runes of that type, with a 100% chance to consume the tiara/talisman. This gives double experience, same as the Ouriana Altar. Elemental talismans give 3x experience if you're Level 80 RC or below and 4x experience if you're above Level 80 RC, and a random assortment of elemental runes. 1 rune for 1 essence is the rule here.

Experience rates here are dependent on what type of talisman you use.

Air Talisman = 14,000 maximum experience per half-hour *
Nature Talisman = 24,000 maximum experience per half-hour *
Death Talisman = 27,500 maximum experience per half-hour*
Elemental Talisman below Level 80 RC = 20,000 maximum experience per half-hour*
Elemental Talisman above Level 80 RC= 30,000 maximum experience per half-hour*

*At maximum efficiency, however, you can really only craft 20-30 minutes before the altar degrades (see below).

~Degrading Altar ~

After 1,000 runes have been crafted there OR after 24 hours (at daily reset time), the altar degrades 10% and becomes unusable. Each day that goes by that you don’t repair it, it drops another 10% until it reaches 0%. In this way, this becomes a daily sort of like Throne of Miscellania in that you have to keep it topped off over time for maximum benefits.

This means the real, effective XP rates you’ll experience are somewhat less than what’s shown above. If you intend to use Auriana to train over time, you’ll have to swap back and forth between Runecrafting and using Runeoids to repair the altar.

~ Other Rewards ~

You can still collect Enriched Runeoids if you want and NOT use them on the altar (for instance, if the altar was already fully repaired) and instead trade them to Wizard Olmiss so the Wizards Tower can use for “research” purposes. You gain % favor that (capped at 100%) equal to the %repair you would’ve gotten at the Altar. This favor can be spent on various rewards:

5% - Abyss teleport tablets (will still Skull you) (untradeable)
5% - Essence Mine teleport tablets (untradeable) - if you use this to teleport to the mines, if you leave via an exit, you’ll choose which wizard to go to, provided you’ve unlocked them
10% Mystery Rune Box - random assortment of runes (untradeable in box form)
20% Runic Gloves OR Runic Boots - each provide 0.2% increase in RC XP.
25% Arcane Rune Box (x10 Arcane Runes) - see below
30% Runic Legs - provides 0.3% increase in RC XP
50% Runic Hood - provides 0.5% increase in RC XP
75% Runic Top - provides 0.8% increase in RC XP
100% Unlock Runic Set bonus - if unlocked, provides an additional 0.5% RC XP if all Runic set pieces are worn for a total of 2.5% extra RC XP.

~ Arcane Runes ~

There is a chance when crafting at the Auriana Altar (based on RC level, from about 1/1000 to about 1/50) to yield an Arcane Rune. Arcane Runes are used in 3 new standard spellbook spells:

~Training Burst (Level 35 Magic, 2 Arcane Runes, 5 Soul Runes, 5 Body Runes) - for 5 minutes, 2% extra XP will be gained in a RANDOM skill. Cannot be used if already under any Arcane Rune spell effect.

~Experience Burst (Level 65 Magic, 4 Arcane Runes, 8 Soul Runes, 10 Body Runes) - for 5 minutes, 1% extra XP will be gained in a skill of your choice (once cast, you select the skill). Cannot be used if already under any Arcane Rune spell effect.

~Knowledge Burst (Level 95 Magic, 6 Arcane Runes, 10 Soul Runes, 8 Body Runes) - for 5 minutes, for all XP gained, you will be granted XP equal to 3% of that in your lowest skill. Cannot be used if under any Arcane Rune spell effect.

~ Is this a Profitable Way to Train Runecrafting? ~

NO! Absolutely not. This is meant to be all about the experience. You’ll frequently lose talismans/tiaras, and you’ll be spending money on the Runeoids and teleport materials. In addition, you have no chance of double/triple/multiple runes per essence, so it results In way fewer runes than other methods. The only real profitable thing about it are the Arcane Runes you get, which I suspect would sell for several thousand each.

~ How does the XP compare to other rates? ~

It would be among the best rates in the game, offering rates at higher levels (75+) of 45k-50k XP per hour. It is not guaranteed to be the best rates, though. You have to be very fast and coordinated and organized to get those rates. Most players with 75+ rc would get 42-47k per hour. At Level 50 rc, this would give about 35k per hour. At Level 99, this would give about 55k exp per hour.

Any feedback you can give is appreciated! Thanks! :) Post away ^_^

Sure. If you have suggestions on how to improve it, let me know. I was being very wary of making the XP too much because I know how the OSRS community is about new best training methods.
