how many yaks must I kill to get the orphan yak, or is there something else I have to do first to unlock the possibility of getting the orphan yak drop?

Is there a way of knowing how many yaks I have killed already? Does anything or anyone keep a count for me?

I guess you're talking about the yak for the POF? Wiki states that it's a very rare drop, at 1/3k chance.
