I don't remember when I started playing Runescape, this is my second chronological account and it is ~12 years old but before then I had been playing for I would guess 4-5 years. I had always been a casual player until around school year 11 when I started to have some issues, I was getting sick a lot, lost all motivation, my grades dropped massively and I have been taken to the doctors but they couldn't find anything wrong with me. It wasn't until the end of year 12 when I was going to schoolies with my at-the-time girlfriend when things got much worse, I started vomiting non-stop for 3 days and my mother came and picked me up. On the ride home it was at this time she brought up that maybe my issue all along had been a type of anxiety. (Don't worry this is important and related to Runescape)

I was then taken to a few specialists and they came to the conclusion I have a strange mix of anxiety and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) which fight with each other and keeps me from actually feeling anxious, I just get the physical symptoms such as vomiting and shakes. Whether it was due to the knowledge that this is what was happening or some other reasons my issues got worse. It didn't take me long to find out that when I was sick of everything and my mental state started to deteriorate I would feel much better when I played Runescape. It was my distraction, even when my at-the-time girlfriend cheated on me and left me because I had become boring I distracted myself and played Runescape.

This downward spiral happened for about three years, luckily my mother was very supportive and tried to help (split parents) however there was next to nothing she could do. During the three years I had seen multiple specialists, doctors, psychiatrists, and there was even a period of about a year where I vomited daily and had to be rushed to hospital 3 times for heart attacks. After these three years one psychiatrist finally found a medication that worked on me (it was experimental and not yet approved but I had strings pulled for me).

I started getting much better but there was still times where things went bad and I had to escape. I used Runescape for this escape so in a way my progress in Runescape matched my progress in reality and when I got the ultimate Runescape symbol of progression, Trimmed Completionist Cape I did something special to represent it I took a trip in a helicopter, something I’ve always wanted to do but never could do.

Now I have a job as a researcher at a university and on my way to getting my PhD in Computer Science and strangely it wouldn’t have been possible without Runescape so I finally got something to represent both my Runescape and real life progression, a tattoo of my Runescape character with his Trimmed Completionist Cape.

While I don’t agree with every update and every change made to the game I will never forget what Runescape has done for me and what it will continue to do for me, who knows how bad my life could have gone.

Thank You Runescape!

No XP waste at it's finest! Love the tattoo, too! :)

My best friend and I are supposed to eventually get matching partyhat tattoos cause we're lame like that. Just haven't gotten around to doing it just yet. :P

It's always nice to read others' stories about RS has helped them, as it's certainly done the same for me.

Best of luck to you in getting your PhD, you can do it! :D

Dude, that is awesome! How long were you in the chair?

Also, thank you for sharing your story - I agree with Brandon, it's fantastic to hear stories from other players that RuneScape has been more than just a game or a way to kill time. Good luck on the road to getting that PhD!
