Hello there! I am Destroyer229, and welcome to my suggestion for a quest I call “A Child in Need”. This quest was originally suggested back in 2008, and details a quest where you help Brother Androe from Monk’s Friend find a day care for his son. This was designed to be a sequel to the stand-alone quest, while providing a way to help lower leveled players raise their Construction skill. The old thread had over 300 supporters, and many suggestions on ways to improve the quest and the rewards; however sadly it fell to the wayside due to inactivity. You could say this is a Version 2 of this quest, bringing the quest itself and the rewards more in line with modern quests. Thank you for taking the time to read this introduction, and I hope you enjoy the quest! _„,•+`'``'`+•,„_„,•+`'``'`+•,„_ Destroyer229 „,•+`'`'`+•,„_„,•+`'``'`+•,„_

A Child in Need

Difficulty: Intermediate

Requirements: A Monk's Friend, Gertrude's Cat, Clock Tower, Carnillean Rising, A Shadow Over Ashdale, 45 Construction, 30 Divination, be able to defeat two level 30 thieves and a Head Thief that scales to your level

Start: Brother Androe in the Edgeville Monastery.

You begin the quest by talking to Brother Androe, who has transferred to the Edgeville Monastery after his fellow monks in Kandarin had one too many parties. He will be distraught, since he found out the monks here will not allow a baby boy to live in the monastery until he is old enough to understand the ways of Saradomin. Since he does not want to give up his son, Androe will ask if you know someone who can take care of the boy. Accept the quest and he will suggest you talk to someone who is good with children and lives in the nearby area.

Talk to Gertrude, and she will snap by shouting something like “Oh, not another one!” When you question her, she will tell you that many people have come to her to look after their children for one reason or another. However, she does not have the space or the manpower to look after so many children. Say that you are willing to help, and she’ll agree if you will foot the bill for the new building, as well as find assistants and supplies. Agree to this and you will have three tasks to do, which will take you across Gielinor:

Pay for the building
Find assistants
Gather supplies

For the first task, you will need to go to the Estate Agent in Varrock and pay him the money for the expansion, 50k to be exact. This task is simple enough, however the other tasks will require a bit of globetrotting to accomplish.

When it comes to supplies, unfortunately, Gertrude will know what she needs you to gather, but you will have to figure out who will have the ability to supply her with what she needs. The following would be the solutions to what Gertrude requests, however you will only be told what is given in parenthesis, and a hint to the person’s location:

Horvik (for a swing set)
Sawmill Operator (for a teeter-totter)
Aggie (for a dyed carpet)
Sir Renitee (for some posters)
Henryeta Carnillean (for some old toys)

For the assistants, Gertrude will tell you where she’s heard rumors of people looking for child-care work. The following people are who you will need to talk to in order to fulfill this request (Note that Gertrude will only tell you the general locations here. You have to find the people yourself):

Hygd (in Burthorpe)
Sarah (in Ashdale)

Once everything is gathered, Gertrude will have one more task for you to do. She wants you to fetch her a clock that will never be wrong on the time of day. If she’s going to open up her doors to a day-care, she wants to have as few problems as possible, so keeping to a schedule will be a must. You will respond by saying you have the technical knowledge to make a clock, but making sure it always tells the correct time is a bit out of your league. Gertrude will suggest asking someone who specializes in clocks, and says that she’s heard of a clock expert in a clock tower near Ardounge, and that he would be your best bet of figuring out that process.

At this point, you will need to go to Brother Kojo in the Ardounge Clock Tower and ask for his assistance. Unfortunately he has other issues to worry about: Some thieves came in the middle of the night and burglarized the clock tower. While he is okay, Kojo mentions that the thieves stole some wires to the Clock Tower, and that it now no longer works. He asks you to find the thieves, and to get the wires back (along with the other possessions that were stolen). If you ask why the tower uses electrical wires, rather than gears, Kojo will explain that he’s been in contact with the Dorgushuun, and devised a way to make the tower more autonomous. Kojo was nearly finished putting everything together when the thieves stole the wires, which is why it’s important to get them back.

Head to the Thieves’ Hideout from Monk’s Friend, and you will encounter the thieves. There are three of them: two level 30 thieves, and a Head Thief who will not have a level. After some futile negotiations, you will have to fight the thieves. The weak thieves will only use basic attacks and are generally weak, but the Head Thief is a bit more complicated. He is able to use abilities and will scale to your level; not to the point of other quest bosses like Dawn, but it’s enough to ensure that he’s a minor threat no matter what your combat level is.

After defeating the thieves, the Head Thief will drop an item called “Pile of Wires”. Take this back to Kojo, and he’ll ask you to reconnect them to the Clock Tower while he researches on the clock you mentioned.

Head up to the central column on the highest floor of the clock tower, and you will have a puzzle to solve. Each side of the pillar has a circuit that you need to connect the wires to. There are 16 wires total, and each side will require four wires to connect the beginning and end points, while making one continuous circuit between them. The wires each have their own shape to them, and you cannot rotate them, so you must find a combination that connects the beginning and ending nodes. However, you will only be able to view one section at a time, so while you could fulfill one circuit using a certain combination of wires, one of those wires might be needed for a different circuit. This will require some trial and error, since you may need to redo sections of the puzzle in order to ensure each side is properly completed.

Once you’ve completed the puzzle, return to Kojo and he’ll thank you for your hard work. He’ll give you an “Ordinary Ornate Clock” for your efforts. He’ll also tell you that while you were busy messing with wires, he researched potential ways to make a clock always accurate. The closest he could find would be a power source that would always keep the clock running and wouldn’t wear out, unlike a normal clockwork mechanism. You will remark about using divination energy, and Kojo will say that would be a perfect energy source. However, the source itself has to be at a proper energy level; too low and the clock won’t function, too high and it’ll break the clock. Press him further and he’ll tell you that the energy at Seers’ Village would be the most ideal to use. Collect 100 glowing energy and a Clockwork and use the energy to create an “Enriched Clockwork”. Use that on the clock, and you’ll have an Accurate Clock.

Return to Gertrude and give her the Accurate Clock. With the clock set, she has everything she could need to open a day care. She’ll ask for a little more time to get everything prepared, but asks you to come back for the grand opening. Return to Brother Androe and a cutscene will play showing the grand opening of Gertrude’s Day Care. Talk to Brother Androe again and he’ll apologize that you had to go through so much work for him. He is however incredibly grateful and…

Emergency Repairs

Emergency Repairs is a repeatable activity you unlock after completing A Child in Need. Each day, Gertrude will ask for some help, as some items need to be repaired. Examples of these items would be: Broken Chair, Ruined Poster, Destroyed Doll, etc. Gertrude will give you five of these broken items per day and ask that you repair them. By inspecting the items, you will know what you need to do to repair them. You can repair them anywhere, so long as you have the necessary items in your inventory. For example, to repair a Broken Chair, you will need 2 Oak Planks, 10 nails, a hammer and a saw (toolbelt items will work). Return the fixed items to Gertrude, and she’ll reward you with 1000 Construction experience per item fixed. This is designed to help lower leveled players level Construction in a fun and quick manner, as well as add a repeatable experience. If you are much higher leveled however…

Outdoor Expansion

Ourdoor Expansion is a higher level activity unlocked once you finish A Child in Need. It is only available once you have level 30 Invention. When you turn in all five items Gertrude wants fixed in a given day, one of the children at the day care will want to talk to you. The child will say that she wants to do more things outside, and wants to have more fun things to do. This will give your character “Creative Inspiration” which is necessary to create outdoor items that the children can play on. These items are: a slide, some monkey bars, a sand box, a carousel swing, and a tether ball.

To create an item, you will need to use a workbench right behind Gertrude’s house, and discover the item. This works exactly like using blueprints in Invention normally, however you need to get a Perfect rating to actually create the item. Once you successfully invented the item, it will appear in Gertrude’s Daycare (presumably constructed by someone else). By creating an item, you will gain 5000 Invention experience. You can only obtain Creative Inspiration once you talk to a child after doing Emergency Repairs for that day, which means you can only create one of these items per day.

Once you create all five items, talk to Gertrude and she’ll be grateful that the children can use their energy outside and reward you with two experience lamps; one of them will give 50k Construction experience, and the other will give 50k Invention experience. Afterwards, you can continue to receive Creative Inspiration in the same way and recreate the items to “improve their safety.” This does nothing in terms of how the outdoor items work, but it will allow you to continue to do the activity every day and receive 5000 Invention experience each time you successfully recreate the outdoor items.
