Basically just that. I'd like to see abilities that require hybrid weapons.


When Jagex was first revealing the Evolution of Combat, they discussed the concept of dual wielding and a question was asked "can we dual wield 2 different styles of weapons?" and the answer given was "yes, but I don't know how effective it will be."

As of current, the capability of dual wielding 2 different style weapons (like a sword and a crossbow) is less of a feature and more of a side effect of the evolution of combat gear system.
I propose to give hybrid combat a chance, and I think we could get an idea of viability from a small set of abilities.



A few questions will come to mind when discussing this topic:

"Will abilities require specific orientations like main hand melee and off-hand magic?"


I would say no, the simplest way to implement this would just be to require 2 different styles in any orientation. It shouldn't matter which is the main hand.

"How will attack style relevant to weakness be determined for the abilities i.e. slash, stab, bolt, thrown, earth, water?"


I would say just determine the style of the ability by the main hand. The auto attacks can just be based how they are now, where each individual weapon has its own style.


"How many of these abilities would we need to get an idea of viability?"


For the most part, dual wielding started off in a similar situation, and each style had around 1 basic, threshold and ultimate for dual wield. So I would say give us 9 abilities: a basic, threshold and ultimate for each hybrid style.





Below, I'll discuss a few of my ideas for hybrid abilities. The numbers are just a guess of what they could be. I'm inclined to think hybrid would be at a disadvantage naturally and by that, tended to give them higher power abilities.

Ranged/Magic:

Basic: Fire Arrow: Coat your projectile in mystical flames, burning your target and nearby enemies on impact. Deals 60-90% weapon damage, and an additional 40-80% weapon damage as burning damage over time for 6 seconds to all enemies within 1 space of the target.

Threshold: Tandem Strike: Overwhelm your target by striking with your magic and projectile at the same time, immobilizing and pushing them back. Deals 230% weapon damage, pushes the target back 1 space, and binds them for 3 seconds.

Ultimate: Lightning Rod: Magnetize your projectile before embedding it in your target and drawing down a lightning storm upon them. Deals 20% weapon damage per second to the target and all enemies within 1 space of it for 15 seconds. (damage continues even after the primary target dies)





Magic/Melee

Basic: Spectral Blade: Cloak your weapon in magic, hiding it from view and striking your opponent. Deals 150% weapon damage and cannot miss.

Threshold: Blaze Strike: Shroud your weapon in fire and unleash it as a powerful attack, striking your opponent and launching a wave of flames behind them. Deals 225% weapon damage in a frontal cone and dealing an additional 30-90% weapon damage to all targets hit as burning damage over time for 4 seconds.

Ultimate: Animate Blade: Imbue your weapon with life such that it will fight alongside you until it fades. Summons an animated weapon that deals 70% weapon damage as auto-attacks against your target for 20 seconds or until killed. Animated weapon has 5,000 hp.

Melee/Ranged:

Basic: Blitz: Swing your weapon, knocking back your target and hitting them with your projectile as they stagger backwards. Deals 60-80% weapon damage and pushing the target back 1 space, then deals another 60-80% weapon damage.

Threshold: Volatile Launch: Hurl your weapon at your opponent, stunning and causing bleed. Deals 120-160% weapon damage and an additional 30-60% weapon damage as bleed over 6 seconds. Stuns target for 1.2 seconds.

Ultimate: Skewer: Fire your projectile into your target, and then hammer it in with your weapon, causing heavy bleeding. Deals 150% weapon damage and an additional 30% weapon damage per second as bleed for 8 seconds. Abilities that Stun from any source extend this bleed by 2 seconds.



Still hashing out ideas. Leave some feedback on what's already here and check back later.

Cross-class dual wielding was the only thing I was excited about in regards to EoC, and it turns out it's practically worthless. I even recall some jmod saying their favorite weapon combination was a whip and a crossbow. Try using that in-game, it's garbage.


I think it would be fairly complicated to make specific abilities for every combination. The simplest way to implement something like this would be to add in two or three abilities that are tied to the off-hand's class. In this way, you can use a main hand melee, for example, and a special off-hand ranged ability regardless of what's in your mainhand.

Maybe a few ults could be tied solely to specific combos. But yeah, full support for anything that would further develop this idea.

Sounds nice, but I have no idea about what the damage and such should be, that's something Jagex could decide. The RS Wiki needs a hand, and Bwian's will gladly take the rest of your body!

I think that could actually be an interesting concept, but those abilties should only be evolved at higher levels (basically not before level 50) from several lower tiered abilities (akin to mutation) to prevent having even more redundant/useless abilities. Improvements: Tooltip / (F2P) QoL v2

How will the damage be done though? If you're wielding Range/Mage, for example, is the damage based on main-hand or off-hand?

You'd also then need an entire set of abilities to cover all possible combinations. Currently we already have melee with the largest subset of weaponry available.

Furthermore, how will accuracy play a role?

I like the specific ideas itself without having to relate to hybridding abilities though - like Fire Arrow.
