Apperantly they did make a F2P game for it, which got cancelled (thus the lay-off of workers/developers i can imagine). Though the numbers are raw and not specified, so i can't say for certain. It could still be a lot of developers for RS3 and OSRS being fired. It's hard to tell.

This part is interesting, however I do wonder if Hasbro still has its dominance like it did in the 80's & 90's. Everything they produced back this in toys couldn't be outdone.

Different times now, kids don't want to play with toys anymore.

You may also enjoy the links in the following reddit post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/9dkpr2/jagex_2017_financial_statement_has_been_released/

It shows 2017 data, instead of the 2016 in my post.
The first post has a few snapshots of the financial statement of 2017.

30.4M paid out in dividend.
43M in profit.

Seems like in 2017 they actually left 13M in the company, rather than taking everything out. So that's good! This is money the company can use to grow it's business.

Paying out large sums of dividend is not bad, aslong as it doesn't hurt the company's growth. Splashing in 43M into growth could even hurt a company (growing pains and such).

Also here is the financial statement for 2017 (most recent one).
Apperantly it's grouped under "accounts" in the UK, i'm from the netherlands so certain terms are slighty different:

Page 12, 13 and 18 are probably the most intresting for you.
On page 18 is their cashflow, which looks a lot less bleak this year (more money is left in the company this time than taken out of it).

Fun fact 1: runefest (and merchandise) seems to rake in about 200K in revenue (mind you, this is without substracting the costs, which could be more than 200K).

Fun fact 2: Geographical turn over is not being shown. "Such disclosure could be seriously prejudicial to the intrests of the group". Could this mean that bot farms/RWT farms such as venezuela rake in a lot of turnover in membership? And that a geographical representation would clearly show this?

Page 25 of the financial statement (bottom of the page) shows a further split in employees.

This'd be interesting to know, I do have the theory that if the legit gold farmers from Venezuela leave for another if there's no players left here to sell their gold to, would the player-count drop by half or less in that same instant?

RS3 has a high maintenance cost, I'm sure. Don't solely bash risky drop tables and not the risk-free ones then wonder why the JGods shut your opinions out when analyzing why PvP polls never pass.
