The problem is everything just outdates over time. Adamant once had its spot as the best gear available, runite had it once, dragon had it once. It's just natural that a gear progression is driven over time - and that's fine.

This said I think upgrade systems for items might be an option. Maybe introduce superior barrows sets at t80 by infusing a regular one (bar linza) into a full set of necronium+4, similar to tuning bane weapons.
Improvements: Tooltip / (F2P) QoL v2
Quick Fixes: Invention

Im looking at games like dark souls or monster hunter, and a lot of the gear you start out in is still viable in the endgame. Usually providing some sort of utility at the cost of less defense etc. Thats the definition of balance IMO and its totally achievable. No reason to just "accept" that things get "outdated." Metas do shift but in most MMOs you'll see gear/strats etc become unviable, and then a couple months or even years later, you see it come back. In RS theres none of that.

I say this everywhere but I honestly thought that upgrading existing legacy content etc via smithing was what the M&S update was going to be about when they mentioned using pvm drops in smithing. Super disappointed to see them not do anything meaningful besides dress up the skill and just "release new stronger gear." M&S is literally exactly the same as before (besides the sloppy execution of the removal of ore and bars from pvm) and is honestly just lazy.

Theres also absolutely no reason to limit gear upgrades to being juts 2 versions of standard and superior. Jag may as well be TRYING to choke themselves. Oversimplification of gearing and overcomplicating of combat, as I always say. Gear can be upgraded in 2 to even 10 iterations depending on how low level of a weapon they start as. Theres so many interesting unique equipment that exist in the game right now but do absolutely nothing and they desperately need some love.

It won't be really variety: the problem is if every equipment can always being kept fully up to date players will stick to an all-purpose choice, ignoring more modern equipment (unless it features an effect, which is even more powerful). I think the best example for that was void armour. Players ignored power armour that was tons of tiers higher levelled because of it until invention was finally introduced.

As I said I do not see an issue if some equipment could get a second or even third spring (after it was out of commision for a while - that is a way to design more modern loot after all by having the boss dropping an upgrade token instead of a new item (or parts to make it)), but other than that I would like to see to use new stuff, not continously using the ones I already had used for the last 10 years because it's the most powerful one due to its effect.

i used a lot of barrows getting 200m invention. dissembling them was very good xp

as awesome as barrows armour is. the issue lies with its t70. if its used for end game it will shoot up in price and people at t70 new players or whatever the price theyll have to pay will be huge for a piece of barrows

at the moment we have

t60 dragon incredibly cheap

t70 barrows. few mill

t80 nex - 50m for torva plate alone. why? its used in end gear master rework trim

if barrows was to end up like this it will be insane price for t70.

thats my only concern. i love barrows armour
Satan loves you

200m all on 7/3/19
My life after 200m xp in all skills
