So I've introduced somebody to the game, and we realized the game is very difficult to learn for new players. I've had to teach them from the beginning, because the tutorial doesn't seem to fully acquaint people with how to play. Even after the beginner quests, she was dependent upon either my help, or the wiki. I don't want to make this into a complaint, or anything, it's just interesting to recognize that some new players could maybe benefit from a more elaborate tutorial, showing where certain options are at, and more of a run-down of how combat works. I am a veteran player myself, and have trouble finding options sometimes too.
"I wonder how many people start playing, and then quit because they don't know what to do," her words not mine.
In someways only the veteran players know the ropes by default now. Again, this is not intended as a slander against Jagex or any one. I really hoped this could help bring about a positive change within the game or in the community. Also, she didn't quit playing, she really loves RuneScape just like me.

the game is simpler then it was back in the day by far , i used to play years ago when it really was a grind and stopped playing at about 121 , rejoined a few months to rs3 as my account was so old it didn't exist anymore and found it very very easy to grasp.....its just a small learning curve and there are plenty of guides out there for real beginners and the wiki is useful too.

the point of playing is to explore and NOT know everything right off the bat because that's what makes it fun the whole new aspect to it just tell them to explore and figure things out along the way or they'll get bored pretty quick like i did and stopped again at 117.

I always thought that was one of the beauties of RS.
As a newcomer it was an adventure to explore not only the complexities of the world of Gielinor but also your interaction within it.

It is about the journey not the arriving.

I understand where you guys are coming from for sure. It's partially about exploring, but there is a limit in my opinion. It can drive some new players away. I'm not saying they need to know how to do everything from the beginning, but I do think they should have a good idea of how things work so they can figure the rest out themselves. Not everyone wants to go blindly into the game, for some that is the beauty, for others it's reason to not continue playing.

RS has the worst "customizable" interface in all games I've played. And good luck to new players trying to figure out the chat system. When you go to "options" it's another maze.

Yeah, there's so much customization that it becomes crazy. I don't know if I could play if I hadn't been around before eoc. At least not without countless hours of experimenting.

If mobile is f2p and free to download i have some trust that would attract players.
If it's only for members then i doubt there will be new players.
Game over.

People will figure out the options if the game is attractive enough.

I agree and disagree.

I do think the intracacies of both gameplay and character set-up these days are on the verge of bamboozlement and if I hadn't been playing such a long time I'd have felt totally overwhelmed as a newb.

However, the way I look at it there's two types of games; quickies which are very easy to master (the sort you'd find on Miniclip, for example, which are tea-break games).

Then there's the long-haul games, Runescape being one of them, where you know you're going to have to invest the rest of your life merely learning how to move from A to B and kill a chicken.

So, yeah, while it's complicated if you're starting from a position of total ignorance (I don't mean that in the rude sense of the word), it's also part and parcel of commencing any of the long-haul games out there.
