To put it bluntly, gems were heavily nerfed between beta and live:
Geodes now have a 50% chance to give a junk 1 spirit shard rather than a guaranteed gem - an annoyance more than anything, but effectively halving the gems received from geodes
Gem rocks have 500% of the health they had in beta in general, so you get gems at just 20% of the rate they were in beta. This is obviously a massive overkill on the higher tier rocks that were already relatively slow to mine in beta compared to pre-rework.
Both seem rather overkill to me, most gems came from combat anyway pre-rework with the exception of opal/jade/topaz - which were always fast to mine from shilo anyway.
I'm just glad I got a diamond 1st try on priff rocks for the achievement in live, mining just 1 rock takes an excessively long amount of time now - it wasn't even that fast in beta really, nor were onyxes remotely near as common as some people were making them out to be (they probably just had really lucky RNG or something).
I had checked them out nearer the end of the beta after seeing peoples complaints and ultimately got no onyxs in over an hour at the beta mining rate where they were 5 times faster than now. They were as slow as animica rocks are then as well so considering the value of those t90 ores now even at the beta rates the rocks wouldn't really be worth touching unless the gem spread has been tilted far more heavily towards diamonds/dragonstones than it was now.
If they gave geodes at some point in the beta then that was before I tested it as they just gave gems and no geodes at all when I mined them in beta.
