How would they enter the game? If we're able to smith them, presumably that would *not* allow us to create our own items which could disassemble into Fortunate Components.

I do like the idea of a variety of Elder Rune sets able to be produced, because that would instantly split the over-supplied Elder Rune market causing reduced supply for any given type, which means they would stay more valuable. Additionally, being able to trim Elder Rune might possibly make it desirable even if only for cosmetic value: players would buy the sets, then keepsake them to use the appearance over whatever other equipment they might be wearing.

But we can't go adding these to Treasure Trails rewards, so that Fortunate Components can be added in (like the Younger Rune equivalent items); people would still mostly be disassembling those for the Fortunates, so what would be the point in diluting the Elder Rune market by having them enter the game through clues?

So yes, it's a good idea so long as it isn't taken so far as to repeat the way that existing trimmed Rune was handled.

It could be tied to Heraldry. That long forgotten feature that I'm sure no one ever uses anymore.

Oh yes, I completely forgot about that.

I also forgot about the Heraldic Rune Kiteshield variants; I was thinking mostly of the Guthix/Zamorak/Saradomin trimmed sets, but Heraldic might actually make the most sense seeing as we are now in the 6th Age, one of those gods is dead, and the god-roster has expanded considerably.

I believe that's what OP was referring to - I remember long ago making a Guthix shield and banner in my house shortly after the release of construction.

Fashionscape is stronger now then ever, I'm sure there'd be a demand for this sort of thing - the only question is whether Jagex would release cosmetics that would undercut their existing profit mechanisms, which didn't exist back when the original painted shields were released.
No pay2win, no easyscape

You could argue that any cosmetic at all serves to undercut Jagex's ability to sell cosmetics. It's not something that has to apply solely to trimmed or painted versons of existing armor types.

Jagex seems to have no shortage of ideas for MTX cosmetics, so that really wouldn't be much of an issue (especially since they gave away some really good looking cosmetics for free with the M&S Rework that could potentially have been sold as MTX).

If someone's going to buy MTX cosmetics, they're more likely to do so if it completely changes the look of equipment. There's no reason to have MTX cosmetics that look like existing in-game equipment even if the paint-job is different. However the in-game economic benefits of doing so are great: it would mean smiths wouldn't just be making the exact same Elder Rune sets that every other smith is making, which helps combat the problem of oversupply due to people selling gear they made while training Smithing.

If there are a bunch of different paint-jobs or trims that can be applied, they would be their own item on the market and carry their own price-tag. If someone really wants a particular paint-job, but few smiths actually make that specific type, then the ones who do would be able to charge more for producing that variety and the buyer would be prepared to pay more for what would be a rarer item.
