Gielinor is a world perfect for heroes: Monsters to Slay, Dungeons to Explore, Quests to Complete, Fish to Eat in One Bite. But for every Hero, there is a villain, usually multiple villains, whose plans for domination and destruction are usually thwarted by the hero. So I thought it would be nice to make a thread, recounting the great villains, remind us of some of the old ones, discuss the plans of the present ones, and hazard a guess at who the villains of the future might be.

Sliske: The first Zarosian Mahjarrat who we weren't willing to bend over backwards to help, everybody knows who he is and he has probably had the largest impact of any villain in Runescape. Possibly the most powerful villain we've ever faced, he may not even be dead. That or the World Guardian and Relomia spent too long in the Shadow Realm and have gone insane.

Amascut: Devourer of souls and reluctant giver of Slayer Assignments, Amascut is one of the few villains who are definitely still alive and definitely prove a threat. We have very little knowledge about what she's planning, and although we've come face to face several times, we have yet to fight anything more than curses against the Pantheon.

Nomad: We've had to fight him 4 times, now he's nothing more than a wight, surely that's it for him, he can't possibly have anything more in store for us... can he?

Lucien: The biggest threat of the 5th age, we never actually had a chance to show him what we were made of, only ever killing his minions. He spanned 3 quests, and would carry out his agenda even while we weren't around, as some of us found out when a distraught Guardian of Armadyl revealed Lucien decided to get off his ass and claim the staff on his own. He is dead and probably isn't coming back.

Sigmund: While only a human with a dagger and pink robes, his protection prayers made him no picnic. Fleeing from you after every defeat, he met his demise at the hands of Zanik. He appeared in 4 quests.

Zemouregal, Khazard and Enakhra: You have fought them many times, but it was decided that since Zamorak might find you useful, their relationship with the World Guardian is now complicated. That didn't stop Zemouregal from holding Kharshai hostage and forcing the Adventurer to surf across lava, so who knows what will happen with them.

Vanstrom Klause: He exploded on death, strange... they never did find the body.

Culinaromancer

Hreidmar and Colonel Grimmson

Rabid Jack

The Dark Lord

Glouphrie

Pescaling Pax

Wizard Ellaron

Mother Mallum

Wizard Grayzag

Morgan le Faye

Fairy Godfather

Dagannoth Mother

Corporeal Beast

Surok Magis

Well those are the ones I can think of that span more than 1 quest

There is the old adage:
One man's freedom fighter (or hero) is another man's criminal (or villain).

Though it does sicken me slightly when Jagex took a whole "shade of grey" with a lot of the supposed villains. *something* *something* character depth.

Generally, the true villain is one that chooses the path of destruction and violence for no other reason that because it is funny or they enjoy it.
There is no deeper meaning why.

Amascut? she was warped by whatever it was with the Mahjarrat (probably seeing Mah and the creation of the Muspah or something). It wasn't her fault that she started this way. But much like Anakin Skywalker in Darth Vader, it just snowballed.

Hreidmar was troubled and he just thought he was making Zamorak happy.

The Dark Lord was a fragment of Seren's own rage and hatred she pulled off from herself that in turn got stronger on it's own.

Didn't Gloughrie want what was best for the gnomes?

Even Sigmund, who probably did many despicable things, you could argue that he did have a point in wanting to protect humans. Goblins had indeed attacked Lumbridge and we can see the damage they cause. There are gnomes (Aprosondra) and dwarves (Chaos) that are more out kill and destroy. But again, it's not like the current generation of Chaos Dwarves had much of a choice either.

And then you get into beasts and monsters ..... yes, they historically make a good "villain". Big. Scary. Capable of destroying a house, village, or city (depending on the size of the threat) with ease.

But ... many act on impulse. Survival. A predatory creature hunts to survive.
Loarnab and Tuska? "villains" through and through. Loarnab terrorized the region of current east Misthalin. Tuska devoured the anima of many planets.
But they were driven by pure instinct. There was no malice behind them.

Even to a small extent: look at Bandos.
He was raised in a warrior culture.
Yes, he killed countless. Yes, he destroyed his own homeworld. He created entire species for the act of war.
But it was how he was raised.
He became the truest form of what his original tribe aspired to.

Sliske ... I'd probably would say he's a villain ... but after living as long as he had, and learning his motivations ... he wasn't pure evil. Just bored and scared.

I would agree on Fairy godfather.
The Fairy Godfather was willing to risk upsetting the balance of nature on an entire planet (with the friggin' elder gods on it) for power.

I'm not entirely sure about the Culimnomancer.

Other potential villains:
Rolo the Stout. Greedy. Gluttonous. Cheap. Not a "monster" but he would let people unnecessarily starve. The man is incompetent (though lucky) as a business man for failing to see the loss of potential future customers would have on his bottom line.

Jed/Zed. True, element of survival instinct. But the guy is a thief, a slaver, betrayed his own men/allies. Pretty much "scum" in the purest sense. All for a few gp.

Solus Delgar. Trading your sanity for power. Then going so far as to make even the hardest core Zamorakians fear you? Even the Zamorakians teamed up with the White Knights to take him down. There's a reason he's called "the murder mage"

Eli Bacon. The guy is a mass murder of people to feed his pigs ....

The thieves from The Monk's Friend. Honestly ... stealing the blanket from a baby? there isn't enough of a profit out there for that ... they would have made a lot more stealing the party balloons or the wine.

The Kendal impostor. Impersonating a deity (especially in a world/universe where they do exist) is usually a dumb thing. Kidnapping and murdering someone is pretty bad too.

The Sinclair Family. What started out as some spoiled children throwing a temper tantrum quickly spun out of control.

Most everyone else would fall under tropes like the well intentioned extremist.

Frankly, you didn't add the player character.

we have an entire skill dedicate to thieving.
we have the Thieve's Guild and capers where we are committing arson, fraud, theft, and assault just to create an entire legal guild dedicated to thieving

we've killed how many citizen of the world?
we have the hunting, fishing, and slayer skills that run the risk of removing life from the planer.
woodcutting and firemaking that contribute to global warming and deforestation.

right now, we're little more than a step or 2 behind the Wise Old Man.

Im just waiting for the next Mahjarrat to go crazy with power and get a god complex. Azzandra, Im looking at you. I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.
