I both want and need some help. Also a health dose of curiosity. I was thinking hard today on basic concepts, then I remembered hearing something about Dungeoneering2 and decided to mix things up. But I need to get a few things straight for this discussion first,

1) No god run faction is involved. Mortals only. (At least not as the controller of the Fortress)

2)This is a fortress designed to defend abyssal research and an artefact.

3)Any normal fortress would have been quickly overrun by any one god faction. A 61 floor monstrosity with all sorts of oddities? Now that's a much tougher nut to crack.

This is Dungeon wars taken to an extreme a multi faction mashup with certain factions controlling certain floors, all the way down to a guarded artefact on floor 61. Like god wars, but not god run factions. There is a lot of potential out there for factions that are not the usual run of the mill gods after all. So instead of just your average hole in the ground this is a multi-floor fortress to protect something at the bottom. There is room for all sorts of oddities, some from the invaders and some from the defenders.

So any holes in that so far? How would we patch it up?:P
Ideas?
Help?:P
What mortal factions are out there worth mentioning?
Just for balance sake: What low level god factions might be worth a look at?
Anima based entities or influence could be involved?

This more of a query into how something like this would work, the lore, the mechanics, how it would fit in with current lore and if there is anything out there that would already support such a thing. And the best place to ask these lorey idea question is my fellow Lorehounds ^_^

Well..time to make an intro. Why not try your own hand at that as well! :)

Under the surface of Gielinor something has stirred and has drawn wide spread attention to dangerous and powerful research going on deep below. The Abyss is dumping ground of the Elder Gods and little known realm. But now it's influence seeps up through the plethora of floors, with rumours of an artefact ... and something guarding it.

Like daemonhiem it should have been isolated, but it is far too late to stop it. Factions have invaded this subterranean fortress and they control certain floors now. But at what cost?

Is this malignant influence an accident or deliberate intent? A Side effect or a defence? Could it be warping the invaders? And what monstrosities did they bring with them? Delve into the secrets of these Dungeon Wars and find the answers before it is too late!

Just a quick off the top of my head intro, I hope you like it :)

I'll reserve this for potential factions and interesting lore snippets. Suggest and post at will! Any and all lore both Dungeoneering style, abyssal and anything people think is releated!

Most of all, just what makes something Dungeoneering worthy?

Roleplaying..lol? This is not an idea of new game content as its far too unfinished. I wanted to know anything and everything that would revolve around such a thing. And I thought the Lorehounds would be the best place to satisfy my curiosity. As well as tyring to figure out just how people see such a thing, but personal and lore related.

The above was just the best way I could think if asking what I wanted to know. And if something more came of it then that's all well and good. But if this is the only thing Lorehounds would have to say I'll just forget about asking at all and let this sink out of sight

:| *sigh*

Though the biggest question is how to focus, or who you can focus content on that is not directly related to a god running the show. Something you didn't even attempt to answer.

The first and foremost issue would be explaining how the Abyss is even leaking into our world. Canonically, the barrier between the Abyss and a given plane is fairly resilient. It's not too difficult to claw your way between a plane and the Abyss and back again (though that's in part thanks to a demonic ritual), but things outside of the travelers and what they carry with them tend to stay on their side of the divide.

Note, I used the word 'tend.' So far, we have but one example of the Abyss continuously leaking into Gielinor: the Anyssal Demon area of the Slayer Tower. There, we can observe a portal that presumably leads directly into the Abyss and has part of the Abyss creeping out of it. The portal, however, appears to be fairly self-contained (leading me to believe it was probably a controlled summoning rather than something naturally occurring.

I suppose the easiest way to explain why the Abyss is leaking into Gielinor is to take the stance that the Abyss itself isn't leaking in. Rather, it could be that some part of Hostilius's body (the fleshy parts of the Abyss we actually get to visit) is trying to pull itself into our reality. Given Hostilius's apparent death, this could be some reflexive reaction to sensing the life flourishing on Gielinor (no consciousness removes the Chthonian inhibition to consume).

You could explain the widespread pervasiveness of this dungeon by having this part of Hostilius attempt to pull itself into our world by using the equally widespread runecrafting rifts (the ones the altars were built on) as veritable tentacle-holds (thereby explaining the presence of the rifts in the Abyss).

As for your artifact, why not make it some chunk of Hostilius's brain/heart that hasn't quite gotten the memo that he's dead yet?

That, or you could play off the brief loss of concentration the Mage sustaining the connection had back in TaS as having damaged the separation between Gielinor and the Abyss and so caused the observed dimensional bleeding.

The artifact in this case would be something dumped into/lost in the Abyss by the Elders, Demons, or whomever that is, for some reason, interesting.

Someone could have come up with a stable connection to take the place of the Mage..which could be a very bad thing. A place which is both deep in the abyss yet here at the same time. What would you call it though, a spatial warp?

There is the potential damage from the mage's lapse in concentration. And the artefact. All those sound perfect. The Abyss is very under explored and with Mah potentially ripping things up the Abyss might be some what unhospitable at present. Though Mah doesn't have tpo have anything to do with it. The fact the Mage was holding open a connection could have attracted all sorts of things.

The abyss has been a dumping ground for countless eons, there is going to be a lot of things potentially down there. The remains of Hostilius being one of them. You learn the most about a people from their rubbish, or so some say. The abyss would be a wealth of information that has been overlooked.

Maybe with good reason?

I see no reason why a group has not got serious about abyss research and exploration, resources could have been gathered to build the full fortress from what they were bringing back. So that covers the how. And gives potential reasons for a why.

Also the Elders have never been more vulnerable. The Stone of Jas is a desperation measure. If anything wanted crawl out of the abyss to make a move against them, now would probably be the best time. Most likely indirectly against but it would not be a good thing for all concerned. The Abyss is also the wall between places, so in theory it goes everywhere and is probably the fastest and easiest way to connect other hard to get to places. That should open up other possibilities.

The Mage in the abyss could be 5th Age, he can be the Bank guy for this one?!:)

Sorry, I tend to do that. But if you want some form of speculation I'll do so:

I don't have much good speculation but if it is related to the Abyss then Hostilius HAS to be included in any way shape or form. The Dark Mage from the Abyss could be a starting point in this piece of content, being able to project himself into our dimension and warning us of the dangers from the Abyss. Hell maybe he could be the equivalent of Daemonheim's Smuggler.

Hguoh's theory is the most probable one, the artifact being an essential part of Hostilius' life force. What if the creature guarding it isn't a simple Abyssal demon, but an echo of Hostilius, something born as a defence mechanism to keep Hostilius going in any way possible.

This kindof reminds me of how the Dragonkin guard the Stone, what if another one of the uses of this artifact isn't just to ensure Hostilius' permanent death, but it can be a source of knowledge and power, just imagine gaining so much information about the eons of demon society, it could be a weapon against Infernus. Now I doubt any of the factions would know any of this, but of course to them any artifact down at the bottom would make them think it could be beneficial to their god/leader.

The researchers who built this fortress to study the leakage are probably long dead or in hiding, and maybe finding them could be very helpful to your cause. Maybe one of the reasons the leakage is happening is because of how powerful Zaros and Zamorak have become recently, it's starting to get Hostilius' attention and his near-dead instincts will him to Gielinor.

(Side note: Can we think of an abbreviation for Hostilius? Annoying to type for me sometimes)

That is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for :) I love this kind of free flow thinking. I think we could abbreviate this lurker as an Avatar of Hostilius we'll just call it Host. Or The Host if it's a group mind that makes the Avatar?

I would think that Hostilius had a large enough ego, that if gods could have Avatars he'd have one too.
