I believe Zamorak's betrayal of Zaros was meant to resemble the assassination of Julius Caesar more than anything else.

The subsequent collapse of the empire mirrors the collapse and division of the Roman Empire (it even extends to the point that Saradomin took over one chunk of the empire's lands, much like the holy Roman Empire, whilst Zamorak took over the other, like the Byzantine Empire).

The Zarosian Empire is most definitely designed to parallel the Roman Empire. There are so many similarities it's slightly ridiculous. Not that that bothers me as I'm reading ancient history. The death of Julius Caesar for all intents and purposes was only the end of the roman republic though which doesn't quite mesh the same.

The real world parallels would be something more along these lines.

Infernus and daemons= ancient Greeks (where Zaros learned of culture, language art etc. Large influence on future empire)

Loarnab- Barbarian society before the roman empire.

Zarosian Empire- The roman empire. This speaks for itself. The god wars following can represent the strife after the fall, with the brief counterattack by Azzanadra and Nex compared to the Western roman empire managing to conquer a lot of lost territory under Justinian and Belisarius.

Saradomin and Zamorak- Saradomin is obvious and the current world of runescape is pretty much the end of the middle ages heading into the renaissance. (Invention etc) More difficult to place Zamorak. The best I think of are the 1st-3rd crusades with Zamorak representing the Islamic nations.

Guthixianism doesn't really have a place outside of the Vikings, but the only way it is similar in this regard is the fact that they were uncommon religions in much of the world.

The others all speak for the themselves. Ancient Egypt=Kharid etc.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

In my opinion you've pretty much nailed it there Aquamancer. I don't quite get why Saradomin's empire to be Ancient Greece, but that's probably because I'be forgetten the majority of the lore behind saradomin. I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

I believe JMods said that there's a lot of references to Ancient Greece in Saradomin and his Empire: I think the Old Saradominist language and the presence of centaurs are supposed to be some of them, but I believe there were more reasons for it.

Well, I'll go with it but of all the cultures I would not have chosen Ancient Greece for Saradomin. Especially bearing in mind infernus exists.
