The most likely reason why horses have never entered the game is because of all the 'i want mounts' people combined with them not being useful in any other way

everything saying they dont exist or were wiped out is most likely just a joke aimed at players

if not horses we should be able to buy a dragon mount lol

Pfft. I already have four terrorbird mounts. Terrorbirds are where its at.

It's just too bad that they don't attack. Actual terrorbirds were very good at killing prey by stabbing fleeing critters in the back of the neck or head.

And then there were none.

There is a reference to the lack of horses in RuneScape when Eli says "Just look at those useless no-horned unicorns that were all over the place a few years ago. When people worked out they tasted good they were wiped right out!".

From Binging Home the Bacon, there you go it's canon. Horses were all eaten during the 5th Age.
That reminds me of the horse meat scandal that's been going around. Restaurants apparently substituted beef, pork, lamb etc. with horse meat to keep costs down back in 2013.
And all while not realising that , well at least in the UK, if someone pays for beef, pork, or lamb etc, it better be what turns up on the plate! It seems to me at least that being a nation animal lovers, that and horses were to central to English life at one point, that growing them just to eat them was a non-starter. They were for riding and, well maybe an status symbol of some sort.

Horse meat maybe perfectly edible, but the traditional roasts don't include horse, which speaks for itself:P

The population of Gielinor can eat whole sharks in a single bite, but struggle with a cake O_o
Those horses probably were the starter coarse in an epic eating binge:D

Depends on the culture. Eating horse may be taboo in English and many other Western cultures, but I know that Italians for one enjoy eating horse. There are probably other cultures as well.

Anyway, I don't mind the lack of horses in RS. It makes the world more unique compared to other games. And humans IRL have hunted many animals to extinction over the course of a few decades. So why not horses in RS?
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.

Because it's too inconsistent. Because at this point it's a massive in-joke, without strict rules, and the game contradicts itself on the matter on multiple occasions.
