Maybe its because the Wyrd from the RS novels was a mature individual. Lord Ruthven's daughter had been vamp**ized for years, while Safaalan Hallow was only like that for a short period of time. Perhaps Safaalan's poison just wasn't strong enough because he isn't a mature specimen.

Alternatively, this is a major lore hole made by Jagex because this detail slipped by them or the player survives simply for game play reasons.

No, it is not. Mod Rowl*y stated in a Q&A that the Wyrd was not trying to kill us, so only administered hallucinogenic poison.
