When you fight Telos, he sometimes shouts "Your anima will return to the source!"

What is he talking about? What is this "source" we are returning to? Does he think we are like the Tokhaar and that we will melt into the anima pool like how tokhaar melt into the lava?

I thought we went into the afterlife upon death to spend the rest of eternity in a fantasy "heaven." Not this "source." What is this source we are suppose to "return" to? The only source I came from is my mum's womb! :O

Also, is lava a different form of the pure green anima pools we see in Telos's arena? The orbs Telos drops suggests so.

meaning that Amascut is actually being decent by devouring the souls of the dead... and Icthlarin's the bad guy, whether intentionally or not

your mum would probably object to you being returned and she's probably a lot scarier than telos is

anyway, living beings generate anima, which is used to feed the elder gods, who are also the source of anima-producing things (although not intentionally sentient ones) so he's not saying 'you gon die', he's just saying 'you're not overly important, being food for the elder gods is your only purpose'
If I understand Telos, that is

Telos. The future is friendly.

I don't think living beings generate anima by current understandings (some people like Zaros have suggested a belief that living things may be beneficial to the cycle of anima in some way, but he offered no evidence) Rather, living beings are a waste of anima according to the Elder Gods. This is why they occasionally destroy the entire universe then recreate it, and cursed one of the only known types of beings (dragonkin) to have survived the process. So Telos is saying "You are anima, and you will return to the pool of anima so the elder gods can eat you because you are a waste of food source".

So the afterlife is a huge pool of anima?! I don't recall seeing any green slime in the description of any of the afterlives Icthlarin mentions and he has been to those afterlives personally too.... And the Underworld River Nuemelonon is just water...

It can get confusing, I know. Every living being has a soul and a body, two separate parts to a whole. When a person dies, their physical body is destroyed, not the soul.. when a body decomposes, the anima returns to the world.
The soul however, is the more potent source of anima, and continues to live despite the absence of a physical body. It is then that the Reaper must collect the souls from the body it's tethered to and bring it to Icthlarin, who must then shepherd the soul to whichever afterlife it's going to.
What Telos wants is to return us, body and soul to the world, so that we may feed the Elder Gods. Personally, I believe that either the Underworld/Afterlife was created by the souls of mortals as a place to go; or, the Elder Gods created it as a place for the souls of the mortals they knew would come to exist to store them all, either to eat for extra anima, or to save for later.
I believe it's possible that the anima mundi of "imperfect worlds" purposely create life as a way to expel whatever imperfections that world has, but expels imperfect, yet still consumable anima in the process. Then, as the body and soul live , the body becomes more perfected; however, the Elder Gods fail to realize this for some reason with the imperfect worlds.
The soul is still imperfect and is simply sent away to another life or the "afterlife" where it can be most comfortable (note the idea of souls going to different afterlives depending on their lifestyle, and souls being changed based on experience, memories etc.) and become a more pure source of anima.

Or maybe I'm totally wrong, but that's the best theory I've been able to come up with.

Another way to look at it:
The Elder Gods never intended to create intelligent life.
Grass, Trees, etc? sure.
Humans, Dwarves, demons, Icyene, etc? no.

So anima would normally be associated with the basic life.

Next, Telos ... didn't get out much.

So here you have something that's existed since the early days of Gielinor, who's sole purpose was to guard this pool, and ... well, what would you expect him to say?

Every being is a creature of Anima - Elders were actually humane when they prevented evolution of sentient life so they don't have to kill it later. Yet they forgot that their artificial food Anima is a sentient being on its own and as such it always evolves when unchecked in form of sentient organisms. So they want to supress sentience on their worlds but also soak them in most (accidentally sentient) Anima as possible - 2 contradictional goals. They solved it by suppression of organic evolution but mistakes happen...

As for soul, I think all theories can be right - Underworld has (or is) a pool of anima where souls melt like tokhaar (difference is that only souls, not also bodies like them), but souls lives in it in the form of it's chosen world that it belived in life. I'd compare it to a computer - we can see only wires, diodes, chips and other material when we see it from ''outside material level'', so in Underworld we would see only pool of anima from ''our outside world''. But for someone actually using the computer there is whole world, programs, music, pictures, games...so is the real Underworld for a soul inside it so it sees it as it's own living fantasy world.

And Rune altars seems to me like a filters of natural Anima leaks, runestones being stored different forms/color wawe frequencies of anima to be used, if someone's soul is enough connected and synchronised to the flow/breath of Anima, he can channel it through it (both being made of same thing) without need of such external storage, like moonclan.

I'd say Telos is a fanatic and an Elder supporter. Though Gielinor may have ideas of its own. Heck Vorago may have started out the same way as well.
