So he didn't say anything other than they are going to make a new skill? Any one of us could have gone out on a limb and said so. That information is completely useless. I feel like they probably just started design work and 2021 is reasonable.
He shouldn't have even mentioned it until it was within weeks of release.
necromancy could be neat but would basically be summoning. archaeology was proposed but that seems super boring. sailing is already tech a thing just not levelable. animal taming would just add to summoning without the summon part. anything demonic could be neat.pssst....we know who you are. Hail Sithis!
Deltaslugsaid: I'm guessing either start of 2020, because devs have been working on for the last year or so, and that's part of the reason why the release schedule has been weak.
Or start of 2021 because they only recently started.
This is more or less what I'm thinking, too. Even factoring in the time put towards the eventually cancelled Weapon Diversity update, the months since Anachronia's release have been light on content, even by modern Jagex's standards. I suspect that they needed to pull staff away from other projects to get this new skill in a presentable state in time for RuneFest.
I don't know if I'm confident in an early 2020 release, however. A new skill, especially this late into the game's life, is a major deal that needs to be tested, balanced, and polished-- very few things can cause waves in a game's ecosystem than a brand new skill, and I reckon that's why we've only had 3 in nearly 12 years. Just like the Mining/Smithing rework, I fully expect a lengthy period of off-and-on beta tests in order to get the skill in a reasonable state.
If the new skill is out any sooner than this time next year, I'll be surprised. In fact I imagine that a more in-depth look into it will be the main attraction at RuneFest 2020, assuming of course that society as we know it hasn't imploded by then.
