Allegedly, the engine team are doing some tweaks to the Linux client in order to fix a lot of problems with the build, however, it has been months since this was reported (April -> present), and problem of incorrect Linux installation instructions has been an issue since April 2016.

From looking at the history of the forums and Reddit, people manage to *break their OS installation* from trying to run the instructions on the download page. Those instructions do not work *on any machine still recieving updates*, at all. Any of them. Beyond people simply giving up and likely just cancelling membership of the game, it creates a bad impression from Jagex.

As is, it is better to have *no instructions* than the broken ones, because it creates less issues and encourages people to seek community help instantly before they've messed around and the solution remains trivial.

The better thing to do IMO would be to repeat what happened in the past, and divert Linux users to a community wrapper for the game, as used to be done with the "RuneScape Unix Client" by HikariKnight. For NXT, there is two particular suitable fits for this, the Snap client and the Flatpak client. Both serve the same purpose albeit using different technologies, and both trivialise the installation on the majority of Linux distributions.

Both clients allow for installation of the client to be as trivial as searching an app store and clicking install. Here's proof for Ubuntu

There is absolutely no benefit to having broken instructions on the download page given the negative experience they cause. Jagex should provide instructions for wrappers managed by the community if they cannot commit to supporting the packaging themselves.

This was the response I got off your initial request for our kicking up the food change in the general forum chat lounge thread...

Thanks Tranq, it's nice to know it's been pushed up somewhere, I thought best have all the discussion kept in one area rather than intruding on the General Lounge.

Thanks again :)

The client in GITHUB worked well for me in Linux. I missed being able to play on my favourite machine and had to use the WIN10 box. I tried it first in my VM first for MX Linux and it worked very well. Now to go to my Linux box and do the exact same steps and get back to OldSchool on that box.

@Aquilo

I'd presume you're talking about Hikari's RSU client there, which is fundamentally a wrapper with Java fixes and still works great for oldschool. You could actually try the RuneLite appimage, which makes running OSRS via RuneLite as simple as downloading it, right clicking it and setting it as executable, and then clicking it to launch. In any case, OSRS is pretty easy to install on any Linux system if you have the right instructions (or wrapper tool if preferred), you just download the jar and then tell java to launch it, though admittedly, Jagex doesn't have *any* instructions for OSRS Linux, despite it working far better than RS3/NXT Linux which has the broken instructions.

MX Linux actually comes with Flatpaks enabled by default, and the flathub repo I linked to above is presetup on that distro, so if you wanted to install RS3, it would be as simple as clicking install on the RuneScape package. Snaps are supported on MX Linux, but they're a little more involved.

It is working quite well here. I had every machine, but, one running MX and when I started up my main box I realized it was still ANTIX. Once I re-imaged the machine it installed and seems to run faster and smoother than the Win10 Box. I hope Jagex adopts this as it just works and I am a happy person again.

Thanks for the update Nick, hopefully we'll hear something soon, hopefully Jagex will even consider adopting new packaging themselves in the best case scenario :)
