Don't bash your head into a rock, don't freak! The Mining & Smithing Rework just launched and I don't know what to do!

This short guide will attempt to get you through the basics and set you up well enough that you'll understand the very basics of this massive and confusing update.

Read on!

So the Rework just launched! What do I need to know?
First thing's first, I'll set this out.
Tier and Level are used somewhat interchangably at times. Level will refer to a specific requirement, Tier will refer to stats. Simple!
All stuff is now set in tiers. Armour, weapons, pickaxes, ores, metals, bars.

The tiers of bronze through rune are mostly untouched, outside of realligning them with their Defence levels.
That means at level 50 Smithing, you can smith a full set of Rune Equipment. Yay!
We also have four new tiers of armor at level 60, 70, 80, and 90.
In order (bar requirements in parentheses:

Lv 1 Bronze (1 Copper + 1 Tin)
Lv 10 Iron (2 Iron)
Lv 20 Steel (1 Iron + 1 Coal)
Lv 30 Mithril (1 Mithril + 1 Coal)
Lv 40 Adamant (1 Adamantite + 1 Luminite)
Lv 50 Rune (1 Runite + 1 Luminite)
Lv 60 Orikalkum (1 Orichalcite + 1 Drakolith)
Lv 70 Necronium (1 Necrite + 1 Phasmatite)
Lv 80 Bane (2 Banite*)
Lv 90 Elder Rune (1 Dark Animica + 1 Light Animica**)

*Pre-Rework, it's the old Bane ore. Same stuff, new use!
**Also uses one Rune Bar

But lets work our way up here.
We'll start with what you should do first.

-Mining-
You need a new pickaxe!
Because everything now obeys the tier system, pickaxes used against higher leveled rocks won't be as effective, just like how using lower leveled weaponry in combat against higher level mobs doesn't work so well.
Find your appropriately leveled metal, and open your world map.
You'll notice now that you'll be able to hover over mining site symbols to see what ores can be found there.

Further down, I'll make a list of the main SAFE areas you can find ores, as there are a few in the Wilderness. Like anybody would want to go there.

So now that you've found where to get your metal, throw yourself in that direction.
Depending on what pickaxe you have already, it might take a while to get some proper ores.

Hold up, what's that yellow bar above my head? That's the new stamina bar. Long story short, the more full the bar is, the faster you'll mine! The best results come from clicking after every swing, but if you're not too worried about how fast you get ore, you can AFK like no tomorrow now. Rocks don't deplete anymore!

Why am I not getting ore on every swing? As you chip away at the rock, you uncover the ore. Fill that blue bar, you get an ore!

What about that weird glowing rock over there? That's a Rockertunity. If you're paying attention and click that rock, you'll get more progress in that blue bar towards your next ore, and even more XP to boot! But once you have enough for two bars, head to the nearest furnace and start smelting!

-Smelting-
It works the same, except you might notice you have a few new options when you right click the furnace. That's because they've added something called the "metal bank". It's storage for all your ores and bars so they no longer take up any bank space. It can hold up to the maximum integer of materials for each slot, so don't worry about it getting full! (For reference, that's 2.147 billion ores AND bars of EACH TYPE.)

When you start melting more ores down, you might notice you're doing it a bit faster. That's because as you level up Smithing, you'll increase your smelting speed. You'll also eventually unlock chances to create double bars, or even more!
At base, you have a 10% chance to make 2 bars at a time, a 1% chance for 4, a 0.1% chance for 8, a 0.01% chance for 16, and even a 0.001% chance at 32 bars. None of this actually uses any ore, it's just extra bars! POOF!

But now that you have two usable bars, lets move on to Smithing.

-Smithing-
They've slowed it way down, baby.
No longer do you hit an anvil twice and make one item, now you need to be like a real smith.

The first thing you'll notice when you head up to an anvil is the new interface. That should be pretty straight forward. Pick out your material on the left, select the item you want to make in the middle, and hit that shiny yellow "begin project" bar on the right.

HOLD UP! How many bars do I need for different items? It still uses the old rates with some streamlining. and anything you couldn't make before copies Dungeoneering!
One! One bar for Gauntlets and Boots!
Two! Two bars for Longswords, Maces, Swords, Scimitars, Warhammers, Battleaxes, Claws, Hatchets, Pickaxes, and Helmets!
Three! Three bars for Legs and Shields!
Four! Four bars for 2h Swords!
Five! Five bars for Bodies!

Wait, what's this orange bar above my head? That would be the Heat bar! You can't work with cold metal, friend! Its gotta be hot Hot HOT! The hotter you keep the bar, the faster you'll work it! As it cools down, you'll get less progress (the blue bar, just like the one when mining!) on every strike, but that only happens if you drop below certain thresholds.
At High Heat (Between 100% and 67% of that orange bar) you'll get double progress.
At Medium Heat (66%-34%), 1.5 times the progress.
At Low Heat (33%-1%), a mere 1.0 times.
Once that bar hits zero, you'll be smithing at less than half the usual rate, 0.5 times. Ouch! So be sure to keep that hot.

How do I keep it hot? Well, next to the anvil you'll (hopefully) see a Forge. This is different than a furnace. It's not used to melt down ores, just to keep a bar hot enough to work.

Did you make that pickaxe yet?
Great!

Now lets dive into a little more explanation on Mining as we head back for more ores with that shiny new pickaxe.

-Damage? Penetration? What?-

Long story short, Mining works like combat! Hit the rock! Deal damage! Penetration = accuracy!
As long as your pickaxe is equal to or greater than the rock you're swinging at, you'll have your best rates.
You can use a lower leveled pickaxe, but it will be SLOW!

-The Ore Box-
Woohoo, now things get truly interesting!
You might've seen an ore box in that craftable list of metals when you were at an anvil.
That's a new item that can store up to 100 of every ore, matching what metal that box is made out of. That Bronze Ore Box? That can only store 100 Copper and Tin Ore, but that's still a few inventories worth.
A Rune Ore Box? Yeah, that can store 100 Copper, Tin, Iron, Coal, Mithril, Adamantite, Luminite, AND Runite Ore. WOOT.
You'll have to start at the Bronze Ore Box and work your way up, using two bars of metal for each upgrade.

We worked our way up and made a shiny new ore box, yay. Now we can gather a bunch more ores! Grab as much as you want before you dive back into the Smithing!

-Smithing Vol 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.-
Welcome back to the heat of the furnace, the slam of metal on metal.
So, what do I need to know here now? We've gone over the heat, the progress, sweet. What's all this talk about +'s?

A key part of the Smithing rework is being able to upgrade equipment (yes, this applies to your shiny new pickaxe as well). This increases its stats to be more effective than before. Chances are, you're not using a bronze pickaxe, cause that can't be upgraded.
Most metals can be upgraded though and the stronger the metal, the more upgrades you can apply.
Iron and Steel can be upgraded to +1.
Mithril and Adamant can be upgraded to +2.
Rune and Orikalkum can be upgraded to +3.
Necronium and Bane can be upgraded to +4.
Elder Rune can be upgraded to +5!

But Charge/Potato/Steelweaver, what does this mean for armour?
This is where tier comes into play. (This also applies to weapons! Just swap "Defence" for "Attack"!)
Previously, an items equip requirement usually meant it was that tier. As an example, a Rune Platebody requires lv 50 Defence to equip, and had Tier 50 stats to accompany it.
With every additional +, that item gains a level in stats.
So now, you can do a +1 to a Rune Platebody and that Platebody will have Tier 51 stats, while still having a lv 50 Defence requirement. Yay!

This is where it gets a little confusing for some.
Because of how they've laid out the higher leveled gear (more specifically, Bane and up), its equip requirement doesn't line up with its defensive values.
As an example Bane gear is lv80 and requires lv80 Defence to equip, but only has Tier 75 stats. That means a Bane Platebody +4 has only Tier 79 stats but still needs lv 80 to equip.
This is so the armours are balanced with pre-existing stuff. Otherwise Bane would be up at Tier 85! TOO STRONK!
Elder Rune has a lv 90 equip requirement but only Tier 80 at base, meaning you can bring Elder Rune up to Tier 85 stats, putting it in line with Tetsu. BUT it still requires lv 90 stats!

As you work to improve your armour, you'll notice increasing bar costs. For every + you add to an item, its bar cost doubles.
As an example, that pickaxe you made? It starts with 2 bars to create.
Adding a +1 to it will cost 2 bars.
Adding a +2 will cost 4 bars.
Adding a +3 will cost 8 bars.
Adding a +4 will cost 16 bars.
And adding a +5 will cost 32 bars, for a total cost of 64 bars. SPENDY! Now we can see why we're drowning in ores.

This covers the basics of basics in the rework!

-Where to Smack Rocks-
You've read everything above, and maybe you're just a bit lazy, so you haven't actually opened your world map yet and hunted down your ore. Or maybe you just read everything because it was entertaining! Either way, below is where you'll find your main ores.

Copper and Tin! I recommend either Ashdale (because of close proximity to both an anvil and a furnace) or just south of Lumbridge graveyard.

Iron and Coal! South-west Lumbridge swamp mining site!
Mithril! South-east Varrock mining site!

Adamantite! You'll either see some at the South-east Varrock mining site, or you can go to the Rimmington mining site!
Luminite, the Dwarven Mine!
Runite? In the Mining Guild! Or near the Fight Arena just south of Ardougne.

Orichalcite only has two areas in the game where you can mine it, in the deep Wilderness... or you saw some in the Mining Guild! PHEW.
Drakolith is the secondary for Orichalcite but has many more spawns. I'll recommend the Mining Guild once again. Otherwise, try the Karamja Mining site just north of Shilo Village.

I want some Necrite! Go to the Uzer mining site in the upper right corner of the Desert.
But now I need Phasmatite? What else starts with Phas... Port Phasmatys, of course! Just South of there.

I didn't mine Bane ore before the rework, is it still locked behind Ritual of the Mahjarrat? Thankfully, no! Look just North-west of Trollweiss Mountain. Otherwise you can still mine it near Glacors after RotM or in Tarshak's Sanctum after Hero's Welcome (that place where you fight the Abomination. Just be careful not to click the BIG bane rock!) Remember, it's two ores per bar here!

Lets get to the high level stuff already, Steel!
Light Animica ore can be found outside the Smoke Dungeon in the Desert, just west/south-west of Pollnivneach. The only other place you'll find it is near Lletya in the Elven Lands though!
Dark Animica ore can only be found in one spot in the game, The Empty Throne Room at the Digsite. It's not locked behind any quest though!
Remember, you'll also need one Rune Bar to make an Elder Rune Bar out of these two ores!

------
This is by no means a fully extensive guide, it's just meant to help you hopefully know a BIT of what's happening on Day 1! If you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Well-written, informative and entertaining; what's not to like?

Thanks for writing this, it's helped make sense of what I saw in the beta and is sure to help when the update lands!

I assume crystal is unaffected so I expect lots of people mining bane ore for better pickaxes right away.
