However, while some wish to restore the old bloodline through the use of the Tome, others are more hesitant after witnessing the price that is paid to receive just fragments of that knowledge. Servants of Zaros
In the Third Age, the Ryders pledged their undying loyalty to the Empty Lord, Zaros, lending to him an powerful force of necromancers under the command of Oliver Ryder, a mahjarrat. Since then, they have followed his teachings, adopting the ancient language, magic, and lifestyle into their culture. No one better embodies this than the Ryderian Shadow Guard, whose armor greatly reflects those of Zarosian Third Age Praetorians.
Servants No More
It wasn't until the final days of the Fifth Age, when Noctis and Joan Ryder rebelled against Oliver and slew him, that the Ryders began to move away from their affiliation with Zaros. Feeling betrayed by their enslavement to the mahjarrat, the men and women of the Ryders finally took hold of their family away from mahjarrat influence.
The Ryders dedicated themselves to the art of hunting mahjarrat, utilizing the magical abilities that were given by them against them. Their services became highly prized, for very few humans possessed the natural magical talent of a Ryder mage.
However, since Zaros' return, they have seen that the place for humans in Zaros' domain has greatly changed. With his new found favor with humanity, many Ryders have begun to question their abandonment of tradition and might even consider being lulled back into his service...

The Ryder military has historically played crucial roles in the forming of kingdoms. Serving in Kandarin, the Kharidian Desert, Asgarnia, and Misthalin, the Ryder name has been established on every foreign soil, whether for good or ill.
There are three branches to the military: the elite Shadow Guard, the Praetorian Legion, and the Scribes and Mages, each contributing a small portion to the House's overall mission.
The three branches also help man the Ryderian Navy, as each blooded member of the family is given a proper seamanship education. The flagship of the Navy, the R.S. Seahawk, is a powerful man-of-war with 50 guns at each broadside, 4 guns at the bow, and 8 guns at the stern. There are 3 others like it, with the rest of the Navy consisting of 15 other smaller frigates.

The Shadow Guard are the Ryderian elite, the muscle that protects the Head of House. These men and women are enhanced through cruel magical rituals that allow them to be equal combatants with threats such as mahjarrat or vampyres. Once trained to be hunting dogs in the service to Zaros, they employ ancient shadow magics to enhance their abilities and are very good at sensing residual magical auras, making them effective mage hunters. The Shadow Guard also command the Praetorian Legion at its most highest level, should the need arise. Each Guardsman is given tactics and command training, allowing them to be effective leaders on the battlefield.
In order to become a Shadow Guard, you must be blooded into the Ryders and have distinguished yourself among the Praetorians or Mages.

The Praetorian Legion are among the best mercenaries on Gielinor. These men are combat experts, training since childhood in the ways of archery and swordsmanship. Before a man/woman may wear the title of Praetorian, each recruit undergoes a brutal training regiment that pushes them to their physical and emotional limits. The success rate for passing basic training is averaged at around 40%, while the remaining recruits either resigned or, in more extreme cases, died.
The Legion is divided into several battalions, each headed by a Praetorian Captain. The Legion itself is headed by no more than three Lord Defenders, which form the Praetor Triumvirate.
The duties and responsibilities of each Praetorian rank are as follows, starting from the top:
Lord Defender: The "generals" of the Praetorian Legion. They are responsible for the overall management of the Legion, to include organizing supply caches, establishing camps and forts, and developing tactics and strategies for battle.
Captains: Manage the individual battalions of the Legion and aid the Lord Defenders in developing strategic decisions.
Lieutenants: Aids the Captain in managing the individual soldier. He is overall responsible for making sure good order and discipline are maintained.
Sergeants: Responsible for training new prospects. Often paired with a "shiny" Praetorian, to aid in the transition from training to legion life.
Legionnaire: Soldiers fresh from training.

The Scribes and Mages of House Ryder are among the most brilliant scholars in Gielinor, with over a millennium of collected research over the ages. With this knowledge, the Mages have developed their very own spellbooks, which have helped supplement the training of their battlemages and Shadow Guards.
House Ryder is quite renowned for its power in the arcane, and this reputation was earned through its battlemages. A Ryder battlemage is a whirlwind of destruction, weaving great firestorms or disastrous tremors on the battlefield. While the Praetorian Legion are the masters on the battlefield, the Ryder mage gives them the support needed to overcome any obstacle, whether that be bringing down barriers, causing untold destruction on castles and forts, or providing medical needs.
