================================================================
Disclaimer: I don't use portables personally, this is just my take as an observer.
================================================================

It's your big day: you fixed the griefing at portables, incredible job! Guess to stop a few trolls you needed to ban a million items; yeah you did it, very nice, and all it took, was a massive inconvenience to every innocent player in the community...

...Hmm, what is this? The trolling actually still exists? Had a problem with me telling you to ban the trolls instead, but let me educate you, silly: that's the only way to get rid of them.

---

Okay, serious talk now though: this update only hurt the innocent players while the trolls still have plenty of ways to troll people at portables. Because the thing is, you can't both have Runescape where trolling is physically impossible and Runescape where the innocents aren't inconvenienced: there are simply too many ways one can troll a player, and realistically you can't prevent them all, which means the trolls always win in the end, especially when their goal is to also be credited for those changes made to the game.

You'd like to believe that there's an easy way to be able to have both the trolls and the rest of the players throw their money at you while they live in a good enough harmony, but if you actually want to satisfy the latter, you have to make the hard choices sometimes. Here, I'll present to you the choices in this case:

"As for forktails, bait them thusly: pound a stake in the soil, bind a goat to it, then hide ye in nearto shrubbery posthaste."

1. Like said, ban the trolls: direct, only affects the trolls and not the innocents, and actually gets the job done. Sure, you might lose them as customers, but if you have any morals left, it's the right thing to do. Because if disruptive behavior is against the rules, why aren't the rules enforced accordingly? Is it there just for show, all bark and no bite?

2. Remove the portables altogether. Not only would it be healthier for the game, as they're a massive powercreep for training skills, making a lot of other content dead, but it'd also get rid of the massive cluster of people, where stupidity condenses (as seen e.g. thanks to the trolling), so that the trolls wouldn't have such a large audience even if they kept trolling. People would probably get angry about a nerf like this at first, but if you indeed care about game integrity like you did with such things as the wilderness divination nerf, then you should stick to your word, as the players will get over it as well when they realize it's better that way long term.

So yeah, don't be silly, Jagex: revert those pointless restrictions and instead punish the misuse of those functions. You might actually change something. > )

Update: Just as predicted, slapping on the trolls' wrists by removing their ability to troll people with one thing did not fix the trolling issue, see the below link.

How many times does it need to be said so that you understand, Jagex?
You cannot prevent trolling in-game without also inconveniencing the innocent players, so when you would make a change that punishes both players, just ban the trolls instead, so you'll only punish the actual offender.
If your reaction to the above is to once again just ban the thing that's used to troll, the trolls will once again find a new tool to use in their trolling.

Support for a revert, nothing else.

This now hurts IM as they cant use portables and now have to move elsewhere just because a few ppl wanted to be a nuisance.

use Shantay pass or something

Why must ppl go elsewhere just to train a skill?

I could say the same to anyone else at cb ac.

If you don't like the pets or w/e else, go train somewhere else.

IMO, this post from reddit from a post about this topic sums it up quite well:

I don't believe any in-game behavior that isn't cheating and/or doesn't take advantage of bugs should be punishable. Arbitrary limits on gameplay isn't enjoyable and micromanaging what players can do based on subjective opinions on what "trolling" is classified as doesn't really help anyone.

Back in the day I used to plant marker seeds on the door to Aubury's rune shop, which screwed with the bots there. Would that be trolling? Should I be banned for that?

Anyway, not sure what the portables change was since it's so vague. If it's a limitation on who/where you can place down portables then that's pretty dumb. Drakes are the only real issue imo and that could be solved by making a less resource intensive version for the pet when there's a lot of em out.
Don't forget – RuneScape members get TWO free spins a day instead of the usual one!

It seems to be that lighting logs is now banned from the area.
