I see people complaining about this being a bug or unfair but I think it's not only intentional but very necessary. I see this mechanic as a smart move on Jagex. Not only does it reduce the number of tokens released into the game, it helps deal with the alt account epidemic the game is experiencing.

For those unaware, it is not an uncommon practice to create large numbers of alternate accounts in order to get more chances at prizes on TH promotions. This utilization of multiple accounts is most commonly used to win cosmetic override tokens and what jagex did is effectively cut the potential profit per key by a huge margin with the autoredeem mechanic. Now these alternate accounts need to win twice the number of tokens before they can turn a profit and due to the limited amount of keys available to these accounts, it makes it a much less viable method.

It also affects people who buy large numbers of keys through bonds or MTX. With enough keys it'll be relatively easy to unlock all the tokens but there are still effectively less tokens in the game due to this mechanic. This helps stabilize the volume entering the game, especially from "high rollers."

Looking forward to the new purple rarity slot item that will be released using this mechanic :)

Who gives a fuck about alts?? I am only concerned that I also now need considerable more keys. If alts are such an issue, why don't they prevent people from creating one in the first place?

Obviously Jagex cares about alts or else they wouldn't have taken this measure. If you are already buying large amounts of keys on a single account, this isn't going to affect you as much as the thousands of alts being used to for their 1 or 2 daily keys. Bandos Flipping GOD

I do love this mechanisme as well. It's good that you first unlock the outfit piece for yourself before selling all tokens to others. It's not good for the game that people use many alts to farm TH and get a lot of tokens into the game and this measure makes the profit smaller :)
Have you played RuneScape Classic, Darkscape or Chronicle RuneScape Legends lately? No you haven't. They're gone. #AbandonedByJagex

I don't have a lot of alts I use regularly, but what I would normally do is give all the tokens to my main first from the three accounts I use regularly, to try and complete a set on my main first, then if I get extras they would go to my second, then third account, so at first I was annoyed with auto-redeeming token, but realized this would decrease tokens in game making them more valuable, reduce alt farming, and increase key sales possibly though it won't make me buy keys I imagine some people would.

So while at first I didn't like the autoredeeming, I didn't complain about it because overall I think it is better for the health of the game. I can still buy tokens with GP to complete the set if I want to, and its good if the tokens are worth more for people who do get extras to sell, and this way the extra tokens go to those who buy keys helping support the game, instead of to alt farmers and possible RWTers which does not support and may harm the game.

I unlocked all 5 pieces with a small amount of keys + an extra scarf i sold in ge. I doubt these will have value long term considering you autoredeem the first piece of each 1, which decreases the demand for the actual tokens. Alts would just have to click 1 thing to slot to focus on so they get gp for that 1 item. The brightest ideas are the most undervalued.

I didn't even think about the positive implication for people who buy keys. In my original post I mentioned that it devalues the keys but it only devalues them when using smaller amounts of keys (like on an alt).

For people who support the game by buying keys (regardless of the public opinion on mtx) the loss of potential profit per key is much less due to the higher number of chances.

Again, great moves Jagex.

Good point about the decreased demand but I'd counter the demand for the tokens would only shrink for those who buy tons of keys which is a small minority. A lot of players only use daily keys or keys earned in game meaning the likelihood of getting a specific item or completing a set may only possible through buying the token in GE.

I think the most likely direct impact of this mechanic would be a small reduction in the potential ingame value of a token while also reducing price volatility.
