I think the interesting thing here is the state of the game. That there are fewer 'good' game developers has been clear for some time. There's a huge emphasis on 'fixing' (ninja) rather than creating and a part of that is that there just ain't any good people around any more.

The reworking is part of making the game 'sexy' to newbies: it's essentially EOC for skills. That's apparent; how do you get more new players into the game and induce them into using MTX? That's probably been Jagex' strategy for 5 years; more? Probably since Mark Gerhard came along, so maybe even about 10 years.

The other thing is that it's a case of making existing skill caps being moved to 120 to be acceptable to the player base and for this it has to be less of a chore than it was in the past. The player base has become more and more passive (pay to play and by that have the game give you the rewards so you can pretend you've 'earned' them) in that it doesn't see grinding as a challenge but more as hateful (they don't like work) and the existing ones who did spend ages getting to 13m xp would balk at the idea of adding another 91m to that to get to 120. Who wants to spend forever working towards an impossible goal when you want to enjoy the fruits of your previous labour?

The survey revealed a clear change of strategy in that development is out (mostly completely) [and it probably would be far better to simply create a new game engine and then go from there]. Then you can plug in and plug out things (a bit like removable DLC) at the drop of a hat and you might question whether some of that shouldn't be on someone's pc with a slimmed down version for mobile which is clearly where the thrust of the marketing is to go.

It will be interesting to read up on Runefest. I won't watch, it's a waste of time but poring over it (or a truncated video) might be beneficial.

TB is surprisingly good fun when you get a game going. And if people know how to play and want to play it's worth it. The rewards should be buffed a bit though and it can take a bit of time to get used to each bit of it, but you should try it on a bonus thaler week.
