Re: Designer Diary: Episodic Content

( You can read or watch this article here: https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/designer-diary-episodic-content)

I saw there there is no discussion thread for the new designer diaries so I'll drop my feedback here :)

I think everything looks great, sounds like an exciting change and I'll be looking forward to these updates.

I do have a couple things I'd like to say however:
-
Bosses
: I believe that there is currently a need for a med-high level farmable group boss. Just like the corporeal beast was back in the day, with no roles required. Something you can bring your clan along to.
A lot of bosses use extremely punishing mechanics nowadays that prevent creative play. I think that should be something to be considered in any new encounters.

-
Player owned content
: I think the success for new player owned content is largely owed to the rewards. If we are going down this path, Construction and Citadels should be completely re-hauled first.

-
Temporary content
: Every year, I look forward to the Christmas event more than anything else on Runescape, and I think I would be right to say that many veterans of this game also share my sentiment. It brings players together, whether if you're F2p or P2p, Maxed or a Noob everyone is present at these events, and I strongly recommend running at least two of these events every year.

That's all I have to say. I cannot wait to see what will be done to the city of Varrock. very exciting!

Cheers ~

EDIT: Very welcome to post your own opinions here too btw :)

NEW SKILL: SAILING

Make it so we sail all deeper waters in gielinor + random gen maps based on skill lvl in sailing.
-higher tier better generate maps with better treasures to be found.

OSRS didn't want it, but WE on EOC should have had 1st chance - Mod Roman had some good pitches and should get snatched to the dev team here!

Could be a Master Skill that adds to construction, crafting, smithing.

make it pvm + pvp.
Best wishes to all.
Jagex declared WAR on April 2nd, 2012 by implementing MTX.

Regarding Player Owned Content, I think Jagex found it a big success already. To me, Player Owned Content is for the enjoyment of us individual players but not for a clan, so I am sorry that I have to disagree with OP about his comment on Clan Citadel.

I don't know if holiday events fall into the temporary content category this Blog talked about, or it is the charter of the Live Ops team at this stage.

Ports, farms and base camp are popular. SO we will not make any more content like this!

" This is stuff that feels ‘player-owned’ and something you grow and cultivate. This might seem an unusual category to choose, but it suits RuneScape and has proven to be really popular with Ports, Farm and now The Land Out of Time’s Base Camp.
Expect us to add to these existing updates more than we create new ones.
"

Not that they are not going to make any more content like Ports, Farms and Base Camp, they said they are going to add more to Ports, Farms and Base Camp, more than they add new ones.

The game already has too much content in it!

That will come as a surprise to many players. I keep hearing complaints that we aren't getting enough new content.

I know that early on in my development as a player, I did all the quests I could to open up the game and gain experience and rewards. And it seemed like a log wait between quests to build up my skills to meet the requirements of the next quest.

But that the game does have a lot of places and activities, some of which are very little used, certainly is true.

I think that there is a crying need to step back and analyze what is going on with the game. Players are intensely focused on gaining XP in the most efficient way, and so a lot of good development work on fun and interesting activities is getting wasted? Ask yourself why.

Then it becomes obvious what you need to fix. Making new activities more fun, so player's can't resist them, isn't the answer. Instead: why do players feel they won't be able to start having fun from the game until they are maxed?

I think the problem is a flawed definition of "fun". There are different kinds of games, all of which are fun for the people who like them. But the games include different activities. Someone who comes to an MMORPG is probably expecting to do stuff like dungeon crawls and fighting boss monsters. They didn't come here to play a completely different kind of game.

So adding "fun" to RuneScape by putting in minigames is going about it in the wrong way. Instead, what is needed is this: even new, low-level players need more opportunities to kill fearsome monsters, bring back treasure, and advance towards the day when Glienor will no longer labor under menaces and be a pawn to the "gods".

Add some more low-level bosses. Some more entry-level quests. See if Dungeoneering can be expanded.

: That does sound fun, wouldn't be overly surprised if they even announced it at Runefest lol

Roddy Piper
: Personally I'm not strongly opinionated about having more 120 skills. If there are more to come, my personal suggestion is to have unlocks after level 99 be helpful but not necessary. Ideally of course, there would still be a ton of content up to 99 so players can still have fun without spending their lives mastering the skill entirely. :)
Also, I agree with your further comment about the survey. Sounded like the questions they were asking had already been decided on indeed.

: Fair opinion, I can totally respect that :)
IMO my personal dislike for the player owned content so far (not including houses) is how time-locked the rewards are, and the lack of customization that real player owned content would have (PoHs being a good example of good customization actually).

@
Tagahklo
: I fully agree with you.
I feel like what a lot of minigames have failed to do is to connect with the main game.
Dungeoneering, Stealing creation, Cabbage facepunch bonana for example all feel very trivial.
A good example of a well made minigame would be elite dungeons - Items can be taken in and out, and you earn real tangible rewards along the way - while playing the minigame - instead of getting an abstract number of points at the end.

I'm not sure why I spent 45 minutes on the survey when they have already made these decisions! Beyond that, these 2 specifically are full of beans, and that is how we got to this point.....

To sum up, let us pretend this is a democracy but your vote has already been counted. And ignored.

Uhm...the stuff in the poll is for next year, has nothing to do woth anything that would be announced at runefest. Runefest shows things they've been working on, the poll is basically for things they'll work on next year. Things we'll see at the 2020 runefest.

The Designer Diary read more like a list of lies, like past promises. We will see if they are able to keep their word in the future, but history tells me that the answer will be: no.

Well, I was going to post some examples, but basically their entire video talks about things in the survey as if they were already decided. So all of it.
