Hello,

Having spoken to quite a few people, I can confirm that there is still a very good appetite for a sailing skill in Runescape. I know that this has been previously polled and only reached 68% of the 75% votes required; however, Jagex has said that it was likely due to a content overload at the time.

I won't go into the entirety of what I believe the scope of a sailing skill could encompass seeing as these ideas have already been made clear (pvp, exploration etc etc). Therefore I will just outline my ideas for a 'business' aspect of sailing which I have not seen covered yet.

First Idea:
Shipping Services

This idea is based on the premise that new islands which are rich in resources will be added to the game as part of the sailing skill release.

As people explore new islands via the sailing skill, they will uncover treasure, both via PVM and skilling methods. Due to the remoteness of some of these islands, there is unlikely to be a bank located there; however, players would still like to have a method to 'safely' store away their precious plunder without having to constantly travel between the island and the mainland. This is where the Shipping Service comes in.

The shipping services would allow players to offer cargo transportation services from a remote island to another player's house or bank in exchange for money or a percentage of the cargo.
The player (company) would be responsible for setting their own shipping fees in a free market, Grand-Exchange type mechanism where the customer is able to select which offer best suits their needs. This mechanism would display information such as: shipping fee, insurance policy, percentage and number of successful deliveries, approx time taken for delivery.

The cargo ships would run automatically and would not require the player to manually maneuver them around. However, the player would be able to select the route in which the ship would take to reach their destination.

Some routes would be more dangerous than others; however, they may reach their target in a quicker time. Also, the cargo transportation company should be allowed to utilize as many ships as their sailing skill allows. However, the more ships the player is operating, the harder it becomes to protect them.

In order to protect ones cargo ships, they may use another vessel from their fleet to help fend off pirates, krakens or even other players if traveling through no-man's water. This ship would be manually controlled by the player who would be notified that one of their cargo ships has released a distress flare and is need of assistance. Each flare would be a different colour, indicating what type of hazard has befallen the cargo ship.
If the player is unable to protect their ship and it succumbs to whatever hazard has befallen it, the customer would be notified and they would receive the amount of money specified in the insurance policy by the shipping company.

Perhaps some islands should allow allow certain types of cargo ships to enter, such as a shallow draft, or narrow hull. This would diversify the types of ships a payer may own, as well as sometimes limit the amount of cargo a ship can carry during a voyage. e.g. a narrow ship with a shallow draft could not carry as much as a larger ship.

Second Idea:
Ferrying Services

If a player does not want to, or does not have the capacity to take their own ship to an island which they have the sailing level to access, they should have the ability to access the island via another player-owned charter ship. This is where the Ferrying Services comes in.

A player (ferrying company) should be able to offer ferrying services to another player in exchange for money, provided that the other player (customer) has necessary sailing level to access the island. This would work much like the cargo transportation services, just ferrying passengers instead of cargo.
