Word has reached the
Pest King
that the humans of Gielinor have killed his Queen and the King has sent his most elite swarm of pests to rid the world of humanity once and for all.

New portals have opened on neighbouring islands to the Pest Control islands known as
Paw Island
(due to its shape) and the pest swarms are starting to invade.

The Void Knights have noticed that these new pests are much more organised and varied than the usual swarms. Attacking in waves through the new portals the Knights are struggling to deal with the threat. Commodore Tyr needs your help to create a strategy to defend against the approaching swarm before it’s too late.

Take on the might of the
Elite Pest Protectors
and the powerful
Pest King
in this brand new minigame update, which features RuneScapes first Tower Defence D&D.
Control the Void Knights in an effort to stop Gielinor being overrun by the swarming threat for new rewards and generous XP in this new monthly D&D.

What is a Tower Defence?

A Tower Defence is a game where the objective is to stop invading enemies from crossing an exit point by placing obstacles and towers along the invading path which attack and kill the enemies before they cross.

Enemies start coming through at the Start point,
S
, and their objective is to reach the End point,

. Towers,

, main job is to kill the enemies before they reach point

• Towers are usually placed outside the path of the enemy and attack from the side.
• Towers can have different abilities to tackle the enemies and sometimes towers/ obstacles can be placed in the path of the enemy to divert them so they take longer to reach the end.
• Towers can usually be upgraded to make them stronger and give them different abilities at a cost.
• Enemies when killed usually drop a form of resource which can be used to build more towers or upgrade towers.
• A life is usually lost when an enemy crosses over point E.
• The game is lost if all lives are lost.


Enemies usually have abilities and attributes too, such as:
• Defence/ Armour – Where higher defence means more difficult to kill.
• Speed – How fast the enemy can move towards the end.
• Hitpoints – How much damage the enemy can take.

Void Knight Towers
=================
PKTD would have 3 main tower types, obstacles and support abilities at the Players disposal to help defend against the swarm.

Tower info.
-----------
• The three main tower types are,
Melee
,
Range
and
Magic
.
Melee
towers can only attack
Ground
pests.
Range
towers can only attack
Flying
pests.
Magic
towers can attack both
Ground
and
Flying
pests.

Melee
towers can be placed in the path of the pests similar to obstacles.
Range
and
Magic
towers are placed on the outside path away from the main battlefield and will attack pests when in their attack radius.

• Graphically, the towers are Void Knight NPCs.
• Towers cannot move once placed, but can be sold and rebuilt.
• Towers can be upgraded.
• Towers cost
Food
to build and upgrade.
• Towers can be killed by pests, but can be rebuilt on.


Obstacle info.
-------------
• There are 3 different upgrade tier of obstacles that can be used to halt/ divert the progression of the swarm.
• The 3 tiers are, tier 1
Wooden
, tier 2
Stone
and tier 3
Magical
. Each tier gives the obstacle higher defence bonus.
• Obstacles CANNOT block the path of the swarm, they must always allow the swarm to pass through a path.
• Special pests types can destroy obstacles. How fast they can destroy the obstacle depends on the tier of the obstacle.

Void Knight Towers
=================
Support abilities
----------------
If the player is lucky, a random kill of a pest will drop a support ability item for the player to use.

Abilities:
• Cast prayers to slow/ stun all pests on battlefield.
• Cast prayers to protect towers from all damage for short periods of time.
• Summon Titan familiars to help aid in killing pests.


Tower Upgrades
---------------
Towers have 4 upgrades tiers available, where each upgrade gives the tower more Defence/ Armour, Hitpoints and Damage. These upgrades will be at a cost of
Food
and
Resources
.

Tier 3 towers gain an additional upgrade tree, which players can choose different abilities for the tower.

Melee
upgrade tree:-
Branch 1. Towers become much stronger than previous tier but have slower damage per second with small area of effect.
Branch 2. Towers have same strength as previous tier but have faster damage per second on a 1:1 basis.

Range
upgrade trees:-
Branch 1. Towers receive strong piercing arrows which have a critical chance of causing massive damage but towers attack speed is reduced. Towers gain ability to attack
Ground
pests.
Branch 2. Fires a volley of arrows for large area of effect attack with added poison to arrows. Towers can only attack
Flying
units only.

Magic
upgrade trees:-
Branch 1. Towers gain a passive healing effect to to heal surrounding towers, but at a cost to magic damage which is reduced.
Branch 2. Towers become much stronger than previous tier and gain an area of effect attack. Towers can only attack
Ground
pests.

=========================
The fun part!


Brawler

• High defence. High hitpoints. Slow speed.
• Appearance: Similar to normal Brawler pests.
• Damage: Medium
Melee
tower damage.
• Ability: Creates a barrier to reduce tower damage to other pests.

Scrapper

• Very high defence. High hitpoints. Very slow speed.
• Appearance: Larger version of the Brawler. Additional spikes on shoulders.
• Damage: High
Melee
tower damage. Low
Range
/
Magic
tower damage.
• Ability: Creates a barrier to which stops all damage caused to other pests until the Scrapper is killed. Spikes shoot out to damage
Range

Magic
towers.

Defiler

• Low defence. Low hitpoints. Fast speed.
• Appearance: Similar to normal Defiler pests.
• Damage: Medium
Range

Magic
tower damage.
• Ability: Can bury itself into the ground to gain higher defence and the ability to attack

towers with projectiles.

Tainter

• Low defence. Medium hitpoints. Medium speed.
• Appearance: Similar to Defilers except they have no arms and have a longer tail with spikes on the tip.
• Damage: High
Melee
tower damage.
• Ability: Can bury itself into the ground but gains no additional defence bonus. Uses its tail to worm through the ground to attack towers.

Ravager

• Low defence. Medium hitpoints. Medium speed.
• Appearance: Similar to normal Ravenger pests.
• Damage: Medium obstacle damage.
• Ability: Can take out any obstacles in its path.

Devastater

• High defence. Medium hitpoints. Slow speed.
• Appearance: Look like Ravagers that have curled up into a ball with spikes protruding all around.
• Damage: High obstacle damage and medium
Melee
tower damage.
• Ability: Instantly takes out any obstacles in its path and can ram into
Melee
towers.

Shifter

• Medium defence. Medium hitpoints. Slow-Medium speed.
• Appearance: Similar to normal Shifter pests.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Can teleport itself and up to two random pests a few squares forward towards end.

Portalers

* High defence. High hitpoints. Slow speed.
• Appearance: Purple Shifters with a small
orange
and
blue
portal in front of each arm.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Can teleport itself a few squares forward towards end. With each teleport it leaves a portal for a small swarm of
Pest Drones
to exit onto the battlefield.

Pest Drones

• Very low defence. Very low hitpoints, Medium speed.
• Appearance: Similar to normal Pest drone pests.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Try to rush to the end.

Spinners

• Low defence. Low hitpoints. Slow speed.
• Appearance: similar to normal Spinner pests.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Heals all pests around it.

Swirllers

• Low defence. Low hitpoints. Slow speed.
• Appearance: a luminous green mutated Spinner accidentally created by Portalers.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Random encounter through portals created by Portalers. Poisons all pests around it.

Leeches

• Low defence. Low hitpoints. Medium speed.
• Appearance: similar to normal Leech pests.
• Damage: Does no damage.
• Ability: Drains the damage caused by towers and buffs the stats of nearby pests when draining from a tower.

The main island is circular in shape and is the main hub and resource gathering area players will use. The maps are 4 'finger islands' of the paw surrounding the hub.

• Initial settings can be made by the player whether they play the minigame at Easy, Medium or Hard mode.
• Pests will come in greater numbers and have higher defence/ armour, hitpoints and speed with harder modes.
• All 4 maps must be won to complete the minigame.
• Each map will have a set amount of starting Lives that the player must keep above 0 to win the map and continue.
• If the player looses on any map, then the minigame will end and they will get XP for the maps they have completed.
• Each mode will generate a different end reward for completion or partial completion.

Resource Area

Players can use various skills to gather
resources
which can be used to build towers, obstacles and upgrade buildings. There are 4 different types of
resources
.

Food
– Used to build towers of tier 1.
Wood
– Used to upgrade towers to tier 2 and upgrade obstacles to tier 1.
Stone
– Used to upgrade towers to tier 3 and upgrade obstacles to tier 2.
Magic
– Used to upgrade towers to tier 4 and upgrade obstacles to tier 3.

• Each TOWER upgrade will also require
Food
.
• Pests when killed can drop
Food
,
resources
or sometimes
GP
.
• Each upgrade will require the previous tier to be built beforehand.


The following skills are available for the player to collect the different
resources
:
• Farming/ Fishing/ Hunter – To collect
Food
supplies.
• Woodcutting/ Construction – To collect
Wood
supplies.
• Mining/ Smithing – To collect
Stone
supplies.
• Runecrafting/ Divination – To collect
Magic
supplies.


Note 1:- Resources are only for the PKTD minigame and cannot be taken from Paw Island.
Note 2:- There will be a cap on resources can be collected each week similar to Clan Citadels, but players can collect resources each week for some generous XP in those skills, again similar to Clan Citadels.

Rewards
======
After all the hard work saving the Mainland from the
Pest King
and his
Elite Pest Protectors
, you deserve some rewards!


• XP Equivalent to Troll Invasion minigame XP.
• For partial completion (if a map is lost), XP will be divided by 4 due to the 4 maps, so each map won will award 1/4 of the Troll Invasion XP.
• Void Knight Commendation Points which can be used to buy a pet version of one of the
Elite Pest Protectors
.
• Any
GP
a pest drops will go to the player at the end of the map dropped in.
• A new Title upon completing the minigame once (Easy mode +).
• A new weapon that can be changed into a
Melee
,
Range
or
Magic
item that does bonus damage to all pests (excluding Pest Queen) (Medium mode +).
• Void Knight Commendation Points can be used to upgrade the weapon to make it stronger.
• A
Pest King
costume if you beat the Pest King (Hard mode).
• A special
Pest King
pet if you beat the PKTD Hard Mode 3 times.


The minigame will be repeatable (but unrewarded) similar to Troll Invasion to allow player to find best strategies to use to beat the
Pest King
.

• A requirement to play PKTD should be to have full Void armour from playing Pest Control (would make players play PC again) - Zarahian
• Rewards could include an upgrade to the Elite Void armour (same attack boost but better defense rating) - Phantasys
• Rewards could include level 80 hybrid Void armour with damage boosting - Black SL
• Instead of PKTD being a monthly D&D it should become a minigame (XP only granted once a month, but commendation awarded after playing) - Darkwolf9422
• Rewards should be more commendation points depending on which map you play - CloudlessSky
• Versus mode! One person takes on role of pest, the other takes on role of tower. Who will win!? - CloudlessSky & Woolley IsaD

Thanks very much for your post!

I'm the same, I love tower defence games, and it just made sence to me to make the pest swarm the enemies as they usually come in waves through portals anyway :P

At this moment in time I'm envisioning the Pest King to be this giant purpleish dinosaur creature lol - think I may have King Dodongo stuck in my head 0_0 or Barney :P

Definitely something I would like to see as well.

Instead of this tower defense acting as a monthly D&D, why not just make it a mini game? The XP rewards you mentioned could be obtainable once a month, but I think we should be allowed to replay it whenever we want to earn commendations so that it'd be much easier and faster to purchase rewards like any other mini game.



Absolutely! I would love for it to turn into an overall minigame XD

My overall worry is that if you could play it whenever you wanted, you would complete it too soon and maybe not want to play it again?
But if you would get the rewards (thinking more XP) each month, why not make it a minigame!


I would think if it was going to be a minigame then there would need to be a lot more maps than I mentioned there lol :P

I'm now thinking of a Reverse Tower Defence with that idea Woolley IsaD!

Have pre-made maps with towers along it, however, this time we're in control of spawning pests to try get to the end by either destroying towers or swiftly getting past them :P

But would spell certain doom for Gielinor if the
Pest King
would get through ;) Bring on the terror!

I do love Bloons TD, but no, the idea behind this is more to do with game lore.

I always wanted a TD game within RuneScape and the Pests seemed to be the most adaptable and varied 'enemies' that we should try stop: specially after us stopping the Pest Queen from invading, why not have the Pest King take his vengeance?

Similar to Troll Invasion in that you play it once a month rewarded, but can also play it as many times as you wish unrewarded to get the best tactics down.

This is a new minigame, there are no Tower Defence minigames in RuneScape.
Troll Invasion is just waves of monsters you need to stop with your character; the monsters aren't going to a specific goal.
Pest Control is similar, you just have to close off the portals with your character as quick as you can. The only Tower Defence element here is they are trying to kill the Void Knight.


Tower Defence involves monsters going to a specific goal, which you need to stop using well placed Towers (which neither PC or TI have).


I think you need to read all that I've suggested rather than just snippets and form a wrong damning conclusion :\
