I’ve seen a lot of chatter on reddit about the rework of banks and placeholders has been shelved after two years of working on it (here [link url=]https://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/a7ydqe/yikes_another_failed_update_we_wont_ever_be_seeing/[/link]).

There has been no formal announcement on here about it that I have found, not everyone (myself included) uses reddit, so had to search for this.

From the JMod replies on there, there has been no saying as to why they are shelving it, with comments simply of “We know it's a heavily requested feature and we're well aware of this, Taken all things into account we made the decision to shelf it for now“ and “It's an extremely huge task with a lot of dependencies and risks. All things considered it's not the best thing to make a priority right now” more sounding like they are running away from something that has gotten a little difficult.

For the last two years, this update has been one of the most anticipated and looked forward to updates, yet, they just stop it with no clear explanation.

It may be too much to ask, but can you please give us a decent reason to why development stopped, what you are working on that has a higher priority over the most requested update over the last two years, and a proper apology to all the players that have wanted it, requested it and given ideas towards its development.

Wow, the biggest update I was looking forward to. What a major disappointment.

Thanks for relaying this information, as we all know, us Forum peasants aren't worthy enough to receive such knowledge.

I wonder what excuse they have for such incompetence this time.

The reason why they shelved it is pretty simple if you really think about it: RS3's current monetization is heavily on MTX, which translates to trying to sell little-to-no effort for as much money as possible from a certain minority of the playerbase (whales). Bank rework would require too much effort for the amount of MTX sales that would occur in return. Bank rework would be their top priority if their monetization focused on membership, since it affects quite literally everyone and the majority pays for membership.

I thought it was shelved because most of their engine team is working on Mobile, and even then a good portion of the Mobile engine work will feed into forming the Bank Rework?

This.

In addition ... we have received portions of a "bank rework".
Remember, they've already done a little bit of clean up to it.
You also have linking between your bank and Diango's Storage and your PoH storage.
Diango was made to hold more items.
They add May's Quest Caravan which has the chest with access to various former quest items.

Though I know some players are more interested in place holders or being able to do stacks of the same item in different tabs.

You're looking at it from too basic a perspective.

If half the players quit because of this, that slashes the number of available players in the game who're able to buy MTX. Many of those who remain will probably still be very unhappy about the situation, and less likely to buy MTX or as much MTX as they used to.

Due to a severe drop in MTX sales, Jagex would then have no other option than to increase the price of MTX, to make more money per sale, and add more toxic features, restrictions and limitations to the game in order to force more players into buying MTX. A price increase would just ensure more people cannot *afford* to pay more, and a more toxic game would just drive even more players away, creating a spiral of death situation.

You could say that currently RS3 is funded mainly by a handful of whales, and it's possibly true. The problem is, whales don't *just* throw money at games, they tend to enjoy and play them too. It's quite possible that some of these whales might have read today's news and could respond by leaving RS3 and moving over to a different game more deserving of their money - they're not contractually obligated to stick around; if they get annoyed or bored that would have severe consequences for Jagex.

When the trade restrictions happened, the player-count was slashed as people quit. Jagex lost a ton of membership revenue. If they had also been depending on a decent portion of the players buying MTX, the losses would have been much higher since nobody is going to buy MTX for a game they no longer play.

And the ones most likely to quit are those who've spent a good deal of money on the game, who feel more entitled to these kind of updates. Freeloaders who don't ever spend any money will stick around... but how is Jagex supposed to squeeze profit out of those?
