This is a quest idea i've posted before to go with a picture i made, but it was a very rushed job and i wasnt happy with it. So since then we've learnt quite a bit more and i've had more time to redo and refine both it and the picture

This new quest is what i see as a TRUE sucessor to desert treasure. Sure i think mod raven has talked about making a quest with the same style as DT before, but this would be a true sucessor and continuation into the ancient magics by expanding on the origins of where it comes from (from what we know in canon) and introducing a cool idea i've had for a while now, ancient dark runes! Aswell as delving into the origins and inner workings of how runecrafting and magic works and further exploring the rs universe and lore

This new quest with the working name either "ancient treasure", "ancient expedition" or "dark expedition" (dunno on name), would be a grandmaster level, or even grandmaster special quest (quest with smaller quests within it). At minimum it would require you completed desert treasure (clearly), children of mah and a hero's welcome. Aswell as high runecrafting, construction and maybe divination

Quest starts by talking to Wahisietel (or maybe Azanadra?) after the events of children of Mah. He says that there is a strange new development he's not sure what to make of and asks if you'll lend your opinion. He then asks you to meet him at the remains of Mah near the ritual site on Freneskae. When there you meet him again and take note of how there are now outcrops of a strange black stone growing like spires around her. Wahisietal explains that after the final ritual he returned here to contemplate on his new power boost and visit Mah's remains when he discovered how the ground around her had started transforming and growing this strange new material

He hands you a sample of it and says how so far he's only discovered it seems to be particularly reactive to his mahjarrat style magic. Examining it and the site around you, you say how it seems very similar to rune essence on Gilenor but not quite the same. Wahisietel asks you to help look into this possibility more saying that while you have learnt how to use ancient magic you arnt using it properly because you're using runes of modern runic energy. But if this is true and you could create runes tuned for ancient magic specifically, you could learn its true depths

You take a piece of the dark essence to Sedridor in the wizards tower and ask what he makes of it. He agrees it's similar to rune essence but it doesnt seem to absorb the usual runic energies, and it makes him feel uneasy trying to use it. He asks where you got it but you state somewhere too dangerous for normal people to go, somewhere he wouldnt believe anyway (we dont want the wizards playing with this stuff)

You ask him how someone could go about trying to tune it to different kinds of magical energy than normal but he says he wouldnt know where to start, the tower just used the runecrafting alters which already existed. He suggests the fremenik might know more because it was them who built the original alters in the first place but they've since disavowed the use of magic, so you must search for fremenik who still practice magic

Speak to the oneiromancer on lunar isle, you ask if know more about how the runecrafting alters where made and how they work. You're told that the fremenik themselves didnt make the alters but their god V did and suggests you check out the memorial shrine to him on the island he died on

On the island you'll find shelves with texts about his works and actions (fleshing out this sorely wasted character). One book could talk about how he became a god by finding the stone of jas in a cave. This would be a good point to outright say how he noticed rune ess seems to grow around any area the stone sits in for a long time, as if the elder energy leaking out from it was transforming the surrounding stone. Thus tying in how this new dark essence is growing around where Mah is because all her elder energy split out into the area

Another book could talk about how V might have learnt (perhaps from Guthix?) the so far out of game canon that each of the different runic energies flows through the cosmos sourcing from different worlds (like how teragard is the law rune, yu'buisk is the mud rune, etc) and he had to learn how to divine the specific runic types from each other to find their source

The final book would detail how he built the rc alters by locating the source of the runic element and building the alter on a point where the anima flows strong using dense slabs of the essence (maybe magic stones from construction too) and carving in spells to direct and focus the energy. Then creating similar alters on gilenor to teleport to these alters

Return to Wahisietel with the news it might be possible to create new alters for making ancient dark runes, but you need a few things. Info on the source of ancient elements, a way to reach there, a way to divine the specific anima flows apart, building materials and the spells to focus the alters

To reach the ancient worlds, he suggests Guthix's world gate

For the tool to divine the anima flows, he recalls that Zaros once mentioned such a tool was discarded somewhere on Frenesae (the elder measure, finally giving this thing another use!)

The building materials, mine out some dense blocks of dark essence from the spires around you (+ maybe buy magic stones from cons shops). Wahisitel packs all them up in a single item pack for use in the quest, or he could join you in your quest and hold the materials for you, not sure yet

Finally as for the knowledge and spells, he suggests you try to enter the Senntisten library from the empty throne room

This would be good time to expand on the Senntisten palace so mine away the rubble from the giant door in the empty throne room and go through. Could just be a hallway with perhaps some more rubble and maybe a few offshoot rooms for padding with the grand library at the end. Here would be a great place to add in some lore books about the city and zarosian empire, would love maybe a map or something of the 2nd age, listing the forts and towns back then

Important stuff here would be a book talking about Zaros's journey through the lower worlds and how he established his ancient magic. Would be important here to say how the dark worlds are the leftovers of the previous universe and not this one, hence why modern runes are different and unfit for ancient magic properly. Another important book would be on various applications of magic from the empire aswell as a stick of warding chalk, this book being where you'll learn the spells for and after the quest

Once you've got everything, head to the world gate. Now i'm still not sure just how many worlds you should go to during the quest. I've got 7 runes total: smoke, blood, shadow, ice, miasma, wrath (from osrs) and time. All 7 might be a bit much so it maybe just the original 4 elements with the others as post quest? Then again the other runes are important for the new spells so i dont know

Either way, main idea here would be to use the measure with the world gate making a minigame puzzle where you slowly tune the gates dials while you use the measure to try and pick out the dark anima flows from the normal ones (maybe similar to that moia memory finding puzzle?). Once you've got a lock with the right dials you go through the gate and into the new world. Dunno if the world you get should be random or not, again not sure on how much you should do for the quest itself

Basic plan here is you arrive on a world, use the measure to tell you which way the anima is stronger. Go there through various obstacles learning about the world, likely fight a boss as the end of each part. Use the measure to confirm the right place, use the building materials to build the new alters then the chalk and your chisel to carve in the spells on the pillars and draw the zarosian seals on the floor

This would be Infernus, as we all know the planet of the demons and its landscape is the typical image of hell. But i think we could do more with this. Previously its been said there's only 1 main city on Infernus where all the demons originate, but i wonder what if Infernus is actually more like the description of hell from Dante's inferno. By which i mean there are various layers going deeper into the core, each different from the last. This would explain the very different kinds of demons, such as the ice demons, jungle demons and such and these are "the infernal dimensions" (not quite dimensions then)

I could imagine this side quest firstly running through the typical hellscape until you reach a giant chasm, in which you climb down and descend through the different levels such as the frozen Infernus, the jungle, the darkness, etc. You could possibly have a puzzle or something on each level based on the 7 deadly sins and get a good theme going. Plus obviously good chances for lore expansion on the demons themselves

At the end is the final level, the smoke level which Zaros described at the core where he made his smoke diamond. There'd be a large smoke demon battle with probably the smoke itself being a field effect (facemask likely needed). After which you build the alter and craft your first dark smoke rune

Vampyrium, the ancient world of vampyres and ofcourse a place we've been to before. I'm guessing people will expect the typical vampyres for this area but i'm thinking of taking it in another direction. What people might not know is Vampyrium is also the homeworld of the araxytes (as hinted by myreque quests and confirmed in osrs lore books), so i can see you arrive in a dense web filled forest infested with araxytes, maybe a few primal vampyres too

You fight your way through until you reach an abandoned and ruined castle of one of the other vampyric houses, similar to Drakan's in design with more vampyres in here. Obviously more chances for lore here but the measure will pull you down into an underground portion. Here you find out this particular castle was overrun with araxytes and became a hive. In the large underground cave you fight basically a vampyre/araxor fusion (osrs has a vampyre/araxyte fusion, now we can have one too!), this boss could be awesome using araxor as its mechanical base! Once beaten, you head deeper until you find a glowing underground lake of blood with rock spires sticking out. Taking a make shift boat to an island in the center, you build the alter and craft your first dark blood rune

This is leng, the world of ice and is a dark frozen wasteland with a global ocean underneath. We know there's giant mountain sized glacors here but honestly i'm not sure what to do with this to give its own story. I could see the usual stat draining cold effect here and perhaps a blizzard challenge where you have to hide behind a rock each time the wind starts up, all the while using the measure to point your way. Along the way you could find that trench and guy walking endlessly in a trance and perhaps the body of that fremenik with the journal from last runefest. Dunno what they where planning with that story line, but here could be a good place to do it. Could show what i think was the seaslugs that where described in that lore book in the water here, make them relavent again

Eventually it would be cool to climb up or even enter one of those mountain glacors (a seemingly dead one obviously) thus sheltering you from the blizard. You could be forced to thaw out a giant glacor here or another ice themed boss, idk. After which you find a frozen pool in the center of the mountain glacor, build the alter and craft your first ice rune

This will be a very interesting one and should perhaps be kept as the last one needed for the quest. When you tune the gate into this one, the usual green portal will turn purple and look unstable, as if its connecting to someplace really bad. Its fairly clear by now the shadow element comes from the shadow realm which stems from the bottom of the universe, from a tear in space near Freneskae Guthix called "the shadow breach". Its my theory that the shadow realm itself was actually the plane of Mah's dream and that something big from her nightmare (my xau tak theory) ripped through into reality from the core of her nightmare leaving behind this breach Guthix identified

So upon entering, you're inside Mah's dream plane. Jagex could get REALLY crazy with the environments here, kinda like shattered worlds but more trippy and purple with 3d platforming (think full on distortion world from pokemon platinum). Would be really cool to see giant shadows swimming around in the skybox every now and so see that those leviathans from the deepest parts of the shadow realm are indeed there. I'd say maybe we could fight a smaller more manageable leviathan with some trippy mind bending mechanics (like pieces of hate?) as the final boss here. In the center of this big mess with the shadow realm swirling around you and giant shadows swimming the skybox, you build the alter, make the shadow rune and are glad to escape

This would be Iaia, the world of the ilujanka for the newly confirmed 5th miasmic element, definitely see this place being a very misty swamp. Really not sure what they could do story wise here but i think finding a small ilujanka village and learning about their very superstitious ways would be cool. They could give you daft sounding hints like "never trust trees with 3 branches, they bring bad luck" or "always throw red mushrooms into water before swinging over it" which could actually end up being true as you make your way through the swamp

The swamp itself, a misty bog with maybe a lost woods kind of deal where there are many paths up and around trees/myres but only the ways where you listen to the ilujanka's ramblings end up true. As for the boss fight, one of their gurh's (dragon-like creature) or even a warrior rider guarding the inner part of the swamp would work. Basically like a reskinned vindicta/gorvek boss, or an ilujanka comes at the end and tames the gurh saving you from killing it. In the center of the swamp under a giant swamp tree (like the solak arena) you build the alter and make a miasma rune

..::[ 4.F. Wrath rune ]::..

The dragonkin home world is as we know long destroyed, so this would be nothing but fragments floating in space, like shattered worlds or the tuska minigame. Could be a giant agility course where you need to do stuff on some fragments to push them into place to move on. When you reach where the core would have been on a much larger fragment, perhaps a large fighting arena with wreckage all around it, you're ambushed by a lone dragonkin who says he's been following you for being suspicious for coming here, or maybe he's a dragonkin who never left here and sees you as the first food in years. This would be a good time to actually have a full 1 on 1 fight with a dragonkin which would be sweet. After which you build the alter and craft the wrath rune
