tl;dr - Re-add the Magical Blastbox and Celestial Surgebox as Dungeoneering reward ammo-slot rune storage. Buff the boxes found inside Daemonheim.

-----

What the boxes did before removal:

When Dungeoneering was added in 2010 the Magical Blastbox and Celestial Surgebox were available to be bought with Dungeoneering tokens, and had very different mechanics from the modern boxes found in Daemonheim. The boxes could be charged with Air+Chaos runes (Blastbox) or Air+Death runes (Surgebox) and wielded as an offhand item. While wielded, the boxes would spend charges to supply air and catalyst runes for corresponding blast- and surge-type spells (other elemental runes were still needed for non-air spells). This allowed the boxes to fill a certain niche of letting mages "wield" their ammo similar to their ranged counterparts. The boxes also had a mechanic which increased the damage of every 5th spell cast.

Purpose of proposal:

With the release of EoC the Blastboxes and Surgeboxes were removed as Dungeoneering rewards, and the boxes dropped in Daemonheim were changed mechanically; the modern boxes are ammo-slot sources of unlimited air runes, nothing more or less. What I propose is twofold: re-add updated versions of the boxes as token rewards, and buff the boxes inside Daemonheim to make them a more attractive bind option.

The re-added and updated token reward Blast/Surgeboxes would each fill their own niche: the Blastbox would provide the convenience of "wielding" a rune stack in the ammo slot for F2P, and the Surgebox would be a sidegrade-option comparable to the Large Rune Pouch for P2P. Specific suggestions are detailed in second post.

Inside Daemonheim, the Blastbox would act as an ammo-slot selectable source of a single rune type (think Mindspike) while the Surgebox would act as a source of all 4 elemental runes. Both boxes would also have small chances to force-crit spells, similar to the Warpriest of Tuska set effect.

What I propose:

For the Magical Blastbox:
- Available to Free-to-play
- Requires 30 Magic/Runecrafting/Dungeoneering
- Equipped in the ammo slot
- Can store up to 3000 of any one type of elemental rune (eg: enough air runes to supply 1000 Blast spells)
- Has a 12.5% chance not to consume supplied runes
- Costs 20,000 Dungeoneering tokens (same price as original Blastbox)

The main idea here is to re-introduce a way for F2P to equip runes. Currently the only F2P staves that supply runes are capped at T10, so any magic training will require carrying (and spending) runes to do so. This suggestion shouldn't have any impact on the High Alch market, since at current prices Nature rune + Fire staff is still more cost effective than Nature staff + Blastbox would be.

For the Celestial Surgebox:
- Available to Members
- Requires 70 Magic/Runecrafting/Dungeoneering
- Equipped in the ammo slot
- Can store up to 5000 of each type of elemental rune (eg: enough elemental runes to fully supply 1000 Surge spells)
- Has a 25% chance not to consume supplied runes
- Costs 65,000 Dungeoneering tokens (same price as original Surgebox)

P2P already has ways to equip runes as ammo, so the goal here is to make a sidegrade-option comparable to the Large Rune Pouch. The Surgebox would have the advantage of holding 4 rune types compared to the LRP's 3, but the box will only hold elemental runes where the LRP can hold any rune type. The box also has a lower overall capacity (5k vs 16k of each, 20k vs 48k total), but with a rune-saving proc it would be the more economical option.

THe boxes still won't have much use inside Daemonheim as staves and wands already give all four elemental runes at once.

Yeah, and I'm not really sure what to do about that tbh. Spitballing, but maybe they could also store bound rune ess to craft bound runes at the start of each floor.

No support for your suggestions.

As Draco pointed out, they have the Runepouch.
So you probably won't get yet another rune storage method.

You also don't have much need for basic T30/50 offhands in AND outside of Dungeoneering.
You can craft offhand orbs inside Daemonheim.
We already have T30 and T50 offhands on the surface.

About the only way you're going to make them "useful" is to make them equivalents to the Tome of Frost. And elemental offhand ... likely Fire and Earth, ad the same tier as the Tome.

Doesn't the rune pouch do exactly this?

The tldr isn't the entire idea, second post has suggestions for what the functional differences between the Surgebox and LRP would be.

Not quite sure I understand your feedback. I'm not suggesting anything related to off-hands.
