This thread will go over some changes and suggestions that I think would be great for the Runescape Forums. I think we can make the Forums more active if some focus is put into making important changes.

Forum Notifications

Correct me if I am wrong, but there aren't any forum notifications. It'd be great if this was implemented into the Runescape forums.

Some examples of possible notifications could be:
- When someone quotes you
- When someone replies to your thread
- When someone replies to a thread that you've replied to (with a notification toggle option)
- When someone likes your post (suggestion about this below)

This would make it a whole lot easier when going back to a thread and seeing if anyone has responded to you or a thread you're following.

A Forum liking/reputation system

Most gaming forums have a reputation system that allows you to like other users posts and I think it'd be great if Runescape had this. It could even be used for some kind of leveling system, for example:
- Level 1: 10 likes
- Level 2: 35 likes

Forum Titles

It could be cool for titles to be implented into Runescape forums, for example:
- Tompaur, "Frequent Writer": 100 posts
- Tompaur, "Typewriter": 1000 posts

Adding onto this - Linking the forums to in-game stats could be interesting and allow users to have custom titles, depending on what they've locked in-game. For example:
- Tompaur, "The Forum Knight": 99 Attack
- Tompaur, "Hunter of Threads": 99 Hunter

Custom borders for player avatars

It'd be cool to have access to custom borders, depending on their forum activity. For example:
- Gold border: 100 Posts
- Platinum border: 500 Posts

Other Suggestions

- Allow users to create draft posts so they can come back to it later
- Provide users with a handful o

This would likely foster confusion between JMods, FMods, LMods and (under your suggestion) regular players with trimmed posts. Besides, JMods utilise Gold borders on their posts. We already have enough instances of people pretending to be moderators in game, I don't think this added confusion should make its way to the forums.

I also feel any in-game incentive, such as titles, would seek to bring the quality of posts down. It has the potential to foster spam posts and those who simply post for 'post count' with nothing entirely constructive to contribute.

Ah yeah, I didn't think about the borders that JMods, FMods, etc have... so I've removed that suggestion from the list. As for the titles, that is still something that I'd love to see implemented to the forums. It doesn't have to be based on post count.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

There are some great suggestions in here. A few are long requested features and things that I'd love for our team to get the time to work on, unfortunately as you may know other things are taking priority at the moment (and will be for some time)

Notifications are really a no-brainer, the engagement opportunities so you actually know someone's speaking to you are obvious and the "simple" solution there is clear to everyone. A bonus thing we'd probably add would be the ability to toggle what you actually want to receive notifications for. A system like that we'd obviously prefer people use it but at the same time, we don't want people spammed in their notification center.

A liking / reputation system is a bit controversial, but providing it doesn't allow a group to "game the system" I don't see anything wrong with it. The order of posts in a forum isn't going to change, and we shouldn't let it. On the other hand a 'support' system like we had with RuneLabs to support an idea is something I think is a great idea.

Theoretically if implemented right, it could also allow for the forums to have self moderation. If enough people submit a report of a post being offensive, we could minimise it on pageload until the user chooses to expand it.

Forum titles again, controversial, I don't think it would encourage as much spam as people think though. Its something I'd support but its much lower of a priority than the above two and we'd need some work from the game development teams as well.

One day we'll get round to the forums, I hope. I think regardless of its problems, its a great resource for us to be able to gather feedback just like this :)

No worries.

I do like the idea of a forum notification system, however.

I guess I should have browsed the forums better, hehe. ;)

I made a thread suggesting a forums app.

Not trying to hijack.

Would love to see all these features added, but within an official app. This way we (players and mods) could have the convenience and luxury that 3rd party apps currently provide.

Also, I believe it would help Jagex gather proper feedback, instead of having to look elsewhere.

Support-

Edit: typo :/

These are fantastic ideas to help revitalize the Forums.

A notification system would definitely make forum participation exciting and something to look forward to.

A reputation system, as you mention, is commonplace for many forums, not just in gaming.

A title system is something very RuneScape unique and one that has the potential to help build an ecosystem that more strongly connects the Game with Forum discussion.

I really applaud OP for these well thought out suggestions and am looking forward to seeing these concepts integrated into the Forums at some point.

An interesting idea may be for veteran posters to have some unique icon. Right now it tells us how long we've been a member, but I find this not needed. I've been posting since 2006, and have been a member since 2006. (but on and off basically.)

Is it possible, with the resources you have, to set-up a toggle-able feature where we can view/organise posts based on likes?

So if the argument is that a liking system might mimic the behaviour of a community like Reddit, then by giving users the autonomy to choose how they want their forums to be represented might redirect a little of the blame back to the community if they do want to fault Jagex for the way the system's changed.
