I remember on the build-up to the Arc that the developers kept mentioning a shady secret behind the Anagami. So what exactly is it? I've read the journals and there didn't seem to be anything secret, and I don't think the Spirit Realm necessarily revealed anything either. We saw the Spirit Dragons in there, which could suggest that it was impossible to transcend into a Spirit Dragon and it was simply an impossible thing that the cult believed in...but we also see in Gielinor that the monks genuinely transcended into Sakagadmi and Aragami. And either way, them mistakenly believing in something impossible wouldn't necessarily be a shady secret either. So what exactly was it that I missed?

Didn't they mention a fourth final form the spirit dragons could transcend into, or is that revealed during the miniquest? (haven't done it)

Yes, the Anagami aim to transform into the Arhat, Spirit Dragons. If the secret is that it's impossible to actually transform into an Arhat though, that's for one thing a bit of a weak secret considering these guys learned how to transcend into Anagami (I mean think about that, these guys clearly aren't a bunch of phonies if they learned how to transcend into elemental's and then into Anagami, somehow) but also, nothing on Aminishi suggests they're KEEPING it a secret that transformation into an Arhat is impossible. And nothing on Aminishi even suggests that it's impossible to transform into an Arhat, their presence in the spirit realm simply suggests that. So, I don't see anything clear as the 'shady secret'.

Could the dark secret be something along the lines of, well either the suckers trying to ascend are being used as fuel for other to do so, or they could be snacks to pacify The Beast?

Total stab in the dark, as I couldn't even get in the well and killing thousands NPCs for a few books to do so maker my brain melt O_o

Do the anagami say anything? I mean, maybe the anagami aren't originally monks, and they're just giving a small amount of power to the monks (turning them elemental) to convince them of this possibility of becoming the lamest creature on the planet... and then probably eating their energy when they die Carn

Couldn't the 'secret' just be that arhats exist, and that wherever you heard there was a dark secret was just framing that in an overly dramatic way that suggested something greater?

The Spirit Realm itself was probably the "dark secret." What exactly makes it dark I'm not sure, but maybe it's something we don't know yet.
