While osrs isnt a topic generally brought up here i thought it would be interesting to discuss how with their recent update they've revealed supposedly 2 new gods in rs lore

Now before people start crying "osrs isnt rs3", dont even bother. Jagex themselves have confirmed they're both the same world with the same lore. The only difference between the 2 games in terms of lore is what current updates they've made. Ergo anything pre-6th age is canonically the same between games. So lets not even start all that, this is just to discuss these new possible gods

These 2 new gods are called Ralos and Ranul and are said to be the gods of the sun and moon respectfully. Firstly its clear where their names come from as they're solar and lunar spelled backwards. They where the 2 figures of the religion practiced in the western continent of zeah and are described as being like 2 sides of the same coin in this religion

The recent osrs update released a temple dungeon and 3 lore books which talk about these gods so lets start by looking at those. Open these images in another tab to read them better:

Tome of the Temple

Tome of the Sun

Tome of the Moon

So what do we get from these books

Ralos being the god of the sun was born from a burst of light and was focused on the idea of living life to the full and being positive. His symbol is a sun with the colour blue, and seems to be fire elemented. Interestingly its hard to tell if he's just fire orientated or if he actually has a connection to dragons specifically since they say its the dragonfire which resembles his power, and you must offer him dragon bones

Ranul being the god of the moon was born from darkness and was focused on respecting the dead, curious in the pursuit of knowledge. His symbol is a crescent moon and his colour seems to be red. There doesnt seem to be anything atm saying he too has an element like Ralos

So first thing we should ask here is are these beings actually gods? At first i thought perhaps these were total myths made up about the sun and the moon (like alot of irl religions had) but ingame you do offer Ralos prayers and it says "Ralos is pleased with your offering and gives you a key". So these are infact beings and not concepts and the fact Ralos responded to prayer offerings does offer some credibility to the claim

Now are they gods? There is very little proof of this as we have very little information on them atm. Zeah was founded by people fleeing west to escape the god wars so these beings did exist before guthix kicked all the gods off world, so timeline wise its plausible. One slight problem i see is in the temple book where it says "the followers of Ranul forced Ralos to flee south cus of that dark wizard". This dark wizard would be Xeric who lived 1030 years ago, mid way through the 4th age after the edicts. Hard to tell if guthix maybe missed these 2 gods, or the book meant "the followers of Ralos where forced south"

As for the whole "they came from the creation of the world", i'm pretty sure this is just poetic exaggeration as religions tend to do. Either that part's a total myth or they perhaps created/ founded the zeah continent itself. Perhaps these 2 beings where on this continent long before the refugees arrived in the 3rd age and founded the kingdoms. Again its hard to tell just how much is a myth, and how much is them truly being a god or not

So then, speculations. When reading this it made me think of tumeken cus he was always the one with the title "god of the sun" but him blowing up in the 2nd age doesnt line up with the timeline. I then thought maybe they're a different cultures names for icthlarin and amascut as these are the children of the god of the sun and have connections to life and death, plus where actually spared from the edicts. But again there are problems with this as both Ralos and Ranul are stated to be male

My personal theory atm is its plausible these 2 could be gods and perhaps could be from Kethsi. I've always found it weird how the stone of jas was said to be there for a long time, the people there actively studied and used it and yet there's been no reported gods coming from this stone use. A focus of this religion seems to be acquiring and respecting knowledge, which fits with the world of mages who's goal it was to learn. Infact the point that from this civilization came xeric, a powerful and knowledgeable mage could add credibility to this idea too

These are just my quick thoughts. What do you lot think? Do you think these are 2 new gods, maybe just powerful mages of their time, different names for gods we already know or just a total myth?

Do you have a quote from somewhere to confirm this? I'm of the understanding that this isn't the case, but maybe we just interpreted what was said differently, so seeing what has been said would be helpful. (I've got no opinion on any potential new gods.)

Just as a note, cremating shades and vyres also magically grants the player a key.

As such, I wouldn’t necessarily jump to the conclusion that either of these are actually gods, though I’d also not exclude the possibility. That said, I find it more likely that these are more localized spiritual powers (like Filliman Tarlock) rather than gods.

I thought Tumeken was the god of the sun?

Tbh I was under the impression that the gods didn't have a monopoly on that sort of thing. Tumeken could be the god of the sun to the mainland desert regions, but something on another continent like Zeah isn't kept from claiming or being given the same title just because Tumeken exists either.

I'm interested in this too. I can see how the two games can have the same lore in respect to some things (like Zeah existing, but we haven't gotten around to doing anything with it yet because of the Sixth Age focusing on the gods and other planets and all that stuff), but I can't remember seeing anything confirming it one way or the other personally.

Then again, I sorta suck at keeping up with developer commentary to begin with.

"the followers of Ranul forced Ralos to flee south cus of that dark wizard".

That means these 2 "gods" are tribal rivalries and should be prohibited from staying on Gielinor by the Edict of Guthix.

Why are these "gods" allowed to stay but other tribal rivalries like Saradomin and Zamorak had to leave?

It makes no sense unless these 2 "gods" are also banished from Gielinor together with Saradimin, Zamorak, et al... and it means the lore from the Temple only tells the tale of these 2 "gods" from before the Edict of Guthix.... or if these 2 "gods" are really going to return, it may mean Guthix is going to die and the 6th Age is coming. :D

When/where did Jagex confirm OSRS and RS3 are exactly the same world? Surely this cannot really be the case considering the large differences in the likes of Fossil Island, Prifddinas, Zeah etc.
