Name: Octavius Kaeso Quinctilius Sertorius
Age: 42
Gender: Male
Race: Human

Appearance: short black hair, clean-shaven, brown eyes, heavy musculature. 5’7’’, 180 lbs.
Attire:

Weapons: gladius, pugio
Magic: N/A

History: Born into a family of ancient nobility in the Gara Republic, Octavius’ family could afford good education for him. But, his path was not commerce or administration, but of war. He served as a soldier, mariner, mercenary, caravan guard, bodyguard, and officer when he had to lead men to battle.

After over two decades of warfare, on land and water, Octavius is knowledgeable about tactics, strategy, martial arts, military protocol, and improvisation. He will be a useful man in Arenar Company, though his age is getting to him. His wargear is clear evidence of his riches, success, and refined tastes, in both striking aesthetics and fearsome practicality. He is expecting to find great treasures, so needs to look good yet intimidating!

He has a wife, three sons, and two daughters. All his children have left home years ago and started their own families. His wife has household servants to look after her.

Other: He is ambidextrous, capable of using weapons well in either hand. Being muscular but not tall means he is quite fast with his hands. He at times can be a funny guy.

Name: Xavakuun
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Race: Drakonian

Appearance: 8’6’’, 570 lbs. Although not shown, we assume he has a tail.
Attire: cuirass, greaves, vambraces, cuisses

Weapons: Two hammer-backed battleaxes (the picture shows them with impractically short handles, but we imagine the handles to be doubled in length)
Magic: N/A

History: One second is all that’s needed to know he is quite a fearsome warrior. Most Drakonians are not even up to his shoulders, and a lifetime spent in overexertion of fighting, exercises and training has made Xavakuun’s body bulky and powerful. He is an extremely dangerous foe, especially since he wears partial plate armour. Scales, claws, teeth, and talon-like toes adds to his natural arsenal. Only the most resolute can withstand his indomitable charges. However, being a superheavyweight, he lacks quickness, speed, mobility, agility, and stamina.

Unlike most Drakonians, Xavakuun gradually developed an interest in the outside world. What was beyond his species’ island homeland? At times, he even wondered if there really was anything in the world besides the island. His questions would finally need to be answered after finding out his sister, Luna, an albino Drakonian with aniridia, had mysteriously disappeared. She had in fact left the island some months ago, heading for the so-called Ashlands on her own. It was unclear whether she went to Old Sorus or Gnaris. Apparently, Luna believed a World Stone created the Ashlands somehow, and that magic occasionally wiped out entire continental civilisations, and so a deathly World Stone must have also created the Deadlands.

Eager to find out what happened to his silly younger sister, Xavakuun did everything he could to find clues. Eventually, his twin sister, Caspara, noticed her twin’s odd behaviour, and joined him in his quest. Once able, they set sail, reaching the Drow Empire and then to the land of the humans.

During their searching and sailing, they ended up at the Academy of Greenhaven and did some inquiring that did not work out, and then sailed to Daralt for further information. There, he overheard Vanick's speech. Hopefully, they can now head to the Ashlands via Arenar Company. Perhaps he will find his lost sister.

He is curious to work with other peoples, and see what happens. Contrary to his frightening size and appearance, Xavakuun is fond of cute things, has a weakness for sweets, is quite tolerant and patient, and at times is rather childish.

Other: He struggles in climbing, turning, and swimming, unsurprising, considering his weight and size. Although he can be dumb at times, he is quite intelligent with his killer instinct.

Name: Caspara
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Race: Drakonian

Appearance: 8’3’’, 410 lbs. Although not shown, we assume she has a tail.
Attire: cuirass, greaves, vambraces, cuisses

Weapons: axe, war hammer
Her war hammer, which is about four feet long in all, which she wields in her left hand:
Magic: N/A

History: Caspara hatched into a family of warriors, so was raised as one, just like her twin brother, who hatched with her in the same egg. This was taken as an omen of good luck, a symbol of triumph. Ironically, the twins began fighting as soon as they popped their heads out their eggshell, and the fighting continued throughout their childhood. Although their passive rivalry has never really ended, the twins have a sort of camaraderie and mutual acceptance for one another. They’re still brother and sister, after all.

Caspara is a tall, muscular, feisty female, even getting into fights with males once in a while. Indeed, growing up fighting her brother all the time, even when he was vastly bigger and stronger than she ever could be, made Caspara quite courageous and cunning. However, she can be impulsive at times, reacting from emotion or violent outbursts rather than sense.

One day, she noticed her brother acting odd, pestering elders, traders and travellers about Luna, their younger albino sister. Apparently, the white bitch had buggered off on her own some years ago. Neither of the twins had much of a relationship with their little sister, besides the usual childish playing. Luna was born unusually gangly, four inches taller than her brother, but incredibly narrow. The lanky Luna could not hope to ever be a warrior, so spent her life with her nose in texts, studying about the Creator and forming theories about Him, whereas the twins had to prepare their lives for war. Now that Luna was gone, Caspara felt guilty for never being with her sister as much.

Well, Caspara knew Xavakuun was too dumb to go off on his own, so she had no choice but to join his silly quest, make sure the boy doesn’t get himself killed. Deep down, however, Caspara truly cares about her siblings, she just won’t easily admit it.

Having joined the Arenar Company, Caspara’s main intent is to look out after her brother. She does not care about the company, or the opinions of anyone there.

Other: Caspara can be quite condescending, conniving, and cruel. Girls are, after all, meaner than boys. Like her brother, she possesses a killer instinct.

Name: Griselda
Age: 50
Gender: Female
Race: Human

Appearance: Seven feet tall, two hundred pounds, athletic. Although her hair has gone white (she used to be blonde), she looks very good for her age. Bright brown eyes, perfect teeth.
Attire:

Weapons: two-handed sword, dagger
Magic: N/A

History:

Griselda's memory is failing, so she only remembers vagueness. She was just a farmgirl growing up in a Dwarven settlement, working hard all day everyday as soon as she could walk. The unusually tall girl daydreamed of fairy tales, fantasizing about being a princess who lived in a crystal castle surrounded by gardens, waiting for someone she referred to as “My love…”. She prayed to Camilla regularly, and was a loner. There were not many human children, and most of the time, no child played with her.

One day, a military official and his comrades went to her settlement, and concluded it was not worthwhile to be protected. It was too far from home, too close to danger, and too difficult to defend. They left the settlement, and a few weeks later, it was destroyed by Orcs.

Only Griselda survived. Ironically, one of the raiders, an Orc woman, somewhat adopted Griselda, probably either from pity or realizing there was something truly remarkable about the very tall human girl. Thus, Griselda began her military career, raised by those who destroyed her life, her family, and everything she once knew.

As she got older, Griselda earned respect amongst her new friends, quickly learning combat. She possessed superhuman strength, equivalent to that of her captors, and yet, she gradually defeated them more often in training. Participating in raids, battles, skirmishes, and whatever else came her way, she proved herself. Since a teenager, she occasionally fought others, even against Goblins, Elves, Dwarves, other Orcs, whatever foe her tribe had, she fought with.

Eventually, as the years passed, Griselda and her Orcs stumbled upon a town, which she scouted and entered to spy on, see if it could be plundered. Residing there was an old friend: the military official who had left her hometown to be destroyed. She attacked him, beating his face, genitals, stomach, and neck, until he was barely moving.

Griselda dragged him to the town square and ripped his clothes off. One by one, she cut off his hands, feet, ears, lips, nose, eyelids, cheeks, testicles, penis, and slit his belly open. She pulled his intestines out, plucked his eyes out, broke most of his teeth, and scraped the skin and flesh off his shins with a knife, then rammed the blade up his asshole. She left him like that, and left the town. No one bothered her. This made her realize she was not a powerless little girl. The town was then partly raided by her and her Orcs.

Her Orcs assembled a larger force sometime later, ready to assault a Dwarven fort that had not noticed them, which was already damaged from a previous assault by some other force. She went off to do scouting, and things were about to change, for the worst. Instead, Griselda approached the fort alone, carrying the decapitated heads of her fellow scouts. She warned those inside, and convinced them to let her lead their forces to the hidden enemy. The sally took the Orcs completely by surprise, and this resulted in a slaughter.

Griselda betrayed her friends. She fought them with uncontrollable rage. But, she spared the woman who spared her so long ago, but has since forgotten who this Orc woman was. At long last, Griselda found her vengeance, as bitter as it was.

Since then, she served as a mercenary to anyone who would pay, fighting for and against humans, Dwarves, Orcs, and Elves. This allowed her to gradually acquire excellent wargear, finalizing into her iconic armour. She never cared about money or success, only the desire to kill, to prove she was not a victim.

A lifetime spent in warfare, and regret of not being able to do anything for her family or fellow townsfolk, has made Griselda quite a twisted soul. She is a woman who churns with never-ending hatred, regret, and bitterness. Though, she keeps these emotions under control and to herself, most of the time.

But, age has its toll, even for her. Knowing she had probably reached the beginning of the end of her career, and life, Griselda slipped away from her mercenary life. Her memories began to fade, and she regretted never caring about money or security. Feeling lost and alone, and unable to remember the faces of her old companions and few remaining friends, she sought anything that seemed to be an easier opportunity that will help her survive her old age. Thus, she joined the Arenar Company. The timing was good, too, for she had multiple serious enemies greatly irritated by her capricious career, seeking her demise.

However, within her tortured soul, there is still that helpless, defenceless, petrified little girl in the shadows. She still retains her childhood fervour, and before she goes to sleep, prays to Camilla. Whether Griselda is an absolute hypocrite, or desperately trying to change, or is unable to shake off her habitual fervour since childhood, is anybody’s guess.

Other: Griselda was born with ultra-dense bones and ultra-dense muscles. Add that to her immense height, her incredible strength becomes apparent. She usually does not talk much, but when she does, her dark side is eventually noticeable.

Xavakuun and Caspara

Having been rejected by the expedition from Greenhaven, the two twins just happened to be nearby the company chanting something about Ashlands.

“Ashlands?” Xavakuun asked himself, overhearing the chanting after some guy’s speech. It took him a few seconds to process all the information.

Caspara did not care. However, she did notice, much to her surprise, what appeared to be another big Drakonian, but much more heavily armoured than her brother. Muzzle, tail...what else could that be but another Drakonian?

“Look, another Drakonian. Let’s go, we might be able to join them and go to the Ashlands,” Caspara said. She did not care about the Drow, and Xavakuun didn’t even notice the dark elf, even as the two Drakonians approached the company.

“Hey! Can we come, too?” Xavakuun suddenly exclaimed, raising his hand to get attention.

Caspara shook her head and rolled her eyes, then, if necessary, tapped Wulvash’s pauldron with a few claws to get his attention.

“Hey you. You joined these things, right? We need to know how to join the company, too.”

Octavius and Griselda

These two had similar visors, though neither seemed to care.

The rather short but rather striking merc chanted along, clearly unflinching at any risks or dangers of going into the Ashlands. He heard a deep voice call, but did not really care. He was just eager to get going, and get rich!

As for Griselda, she stood tall and straight, and silent. She didn’t care about chanting, alone with her thoughts. She turned her head, noticing a couple more Drakonians in the company. What were the chances of that happening?

Caspara and Xavakuun

"Oh, look, I didn't need your help after all," Caspara remarked to the Drakonian.

"Ha! See? Me shouting was the quicker plan after all," her twin remarked.

"Yeah. Alright, let's go see the quartermaster," she said, Xavakuun following her. The two neared the man who spoke, the twins looking back and forth from Alicia to Sarah.

"Who's the quartermaster, again?" Caspara asked.

"You all look the same," Xavakuun commented with a shrug.

The Docks

“Uugghh! I’ve had enough of damn boats...” Caspara grumbled to herself as the company boarded the ship. Her twin gave her a smack across the shoulder.

“Aw, don’t be a pouty lizard, Caspy! We get to meet new people!” Xavakuun exclaimed eagerly, his sister scowling.

“When this is done, I will lie in gold!” Octavius remarked confidently, the short but muscular wannabe centurion walking with his chin high (that is, helm high?).

Griselda was silent, so Octavius smacked his gauntlet across her pauldron, getting her attention, then shrugging at her. He then pointed at the young dark elf kid, the one named Zensira, or at least he thought he pointed at her, suggesting it was she who smacked the tall lady’s armour. Griselda just shook her head, and said nothing.

The Sea Drake

Griselda stood silently at the railings, overlooking the waters. She kept herself to herself, very few men able to stand up to her shoulders.
As Octavius walked, he joined a group of walking sailors. As he and the sailors past Griselda, he gave her a metallic smack over her armoured butt. When Griselda’s head turned in her helm, Octavius walked along as if nothing happened, whistling as a few seagulls cawed.

The Drakonian twins stood at the other side of the ship, apparently bickering about something that surely couldn't be important. At times they swiped a paw at each other, something between careless and annoyed, but their conflict never escalated too far. As Octavius walked past them, he stepped on Xavakuun’s tail, causing the big dinosaur to jump with an odd, high-pitched, yelp-like noise. The twins looked at the centurion, but he just scuttled along, cape flowing in the wind. The two Drakonians paused, then looked at each other, then continued bickering.

Octavius walked forth, arms high and apart, a bottle of wine tied to his belt. Scuttling to Vanick, just as it would seem Octavius would give him a hug, the stocky centurion suddenly put his hands on the shoulders of the mailed longbowman and loricated woman standing near Vanick.

“Ah-hahhh, ha ha ha ha hah! Another company!” Octavius exclaimed confidently, head turning side to side. “So, who gets to share the treasures we’ll sleep in? Eh! Surely not me, ah?” he continued, then gave the loricated woman a little shake, “Maybe this one needs some treasures before she sleeps at all! Hah hah hah hah!" he continued as a seagull flew overhead, flying into a mast of the ship and bouncing off with a thud.

Octavius

Denied.

“Oh, mama mia, mama mia!” Octavius exclaimed, raising his hands and lowering his head in surrender, then waddled back onto the ship as if nothing happened. Chances are, the armoured woman wouldn’t forget Octavius’ little gesture, but he didn’t really care. Adventure awaits!

The Sea Drake

Griselda finished her sea-gazing, then went up the docks, sliding her hand along the posts. She boarded the ship after Octavius, having a hunch he was a bit of a twit at times. She would keep her guard up around him.

As Caspara and Xavakuun argued non-stop, they did not seem to overhear the insultive comment one of the sailors had said. Caspara thought she heard something funny, and turned her head. The other Drakonian warned a sailor of such comments, but since Wulvash clearly didn’t freak out, and Caspara tended to not care about foreigners, she figured the comment wasn’t anything serious. As for Xavakuun, well, he was a bit of a dimwit at times, and could not possibly realize what was said.

“...You said you didn’t like it, so I ate it,” Xavakuun grumbled.

“Just because I didn’t like it, doesn’t mean I wouldn't eat it!” Caspara grumbled back, turning her head back to her dumb brother.

"Well, it kinda does mean you wouldn't..."

"Pfff, you take one nibble, and half my food's gone! That's the problem!"

"I'm a big guy, I need more food than you. And besides, you take one sip, and half my wine's gone. You drink more than me at times!"

"You said I could have it!"

"But I didn't say you could chug half of it!"

They then argued about semantics and food, and wine...

Griselda may have heard what was spoken aloud, but she did not react. She was too old to deal with childish idiocy, and did not want to risk any unnecessary conflict. So she kept herself to herself, for now.

As for Octavius, he lazily leaned against the railings of the ship, visor lifted, enjoying his skin of wine and the salty air. After a chug, he looked over yonder, overhearing one of the sailors exclaim his views on Drakonians.

Caspara suddenly tilted her head back, tongue and teeth open for the world to see, and she let off an angry shout. Her brother did not seem bothered, but did look at the mercenary.
A few other humans joined in the drama. The comments were not only directed against the lizards, but one of the mercenaries made a few crude remarks about the Drow in relation to her master.

Octavius chuckled at what he heard, and then a teenage girl scuttled to the scene with her short legs, stating her rather poorly-worded, badly-spoken opinion on the matter, which was a repetition of what she heard but in a different perspective.

“Ohh hoh hoh hoh hoh hoh!” Octavius heartily but pretentiously laughed at Annie’s wisdom, rearing his head back, a little wine spattering out his mouth. He looked to the side, and saw the Drakonian siblings turn their heads, then start walking across the deck. “Ohhhh! Hoh hoh hoh hoh hoh!” he laughed, Caspara giving him an annoyed look as she past him.

“Laugh like that again, and I’ll hit you,” Caspara warned, Octavius just burping.

Suddenly, Octavius darted forth past the Drakonian siblings, stopping near Zensira and stroking her head. “Nope, this one’s not for you,” he remarked to the mercenary, "or you," he said to Wulvash, then pointed at Annie, “she’s for her. They like to form a shield wall, without spears, and then do all the eating they want. Ohhhh! Hoh hoh hoh hoh!” Octavius bellowed, then suddenly was hit in the back and fell over, Caspara walking over him.

Xavakuun and Caspara stood nearby the condescending humans, towering over them all. Xavakuun was tolerant to foreigners, and Caspara usually didn’t care about foreign opinions, but going as far as exclaiming ‘shit-gods’ was beyond either of their patience. Not only was it an immature insult, it was also referring to a polytheism that Drakonians did not believe in.

Just as it would seem Caspara would cross her arms and keep her distance, she suddenly stepped forth, leaning into the crewmember. She exhaled through her nostrils, blowing some of the man’s hair up, and pushed her muzzle against his forehead. She made a little growl, then took a quick inhale.

“Listen right here, you fucking piece of shit,” Caspara cussed, her tone of voice something between nonchalant and demanding. “You know nothing about us, or of the world. You say and think this way because you feel insignificant, and you want to be important at the expense of others because you won’t ever do anything on your own,” she asserted, her brother standing nearby, arms crossed, just in case, but said nothing.

While Griselda was sea-gazing, she had seen some masses of water rising, going up the ship, but suddenly, the rising water fell. It was a peculiar thing to notice, but Griselda did not react, and continued sea-gazing as if nothing had happened.

The captain, Robert, was quite an upstanding man, not believing the mate’s lie. Caspara was surprised by how tolerant Robert was, as well as that the punishment would be five lashings for the offenders. In fact, she became dumbstruck, eyes wide and unblinking, mandibles shut. She expected nothing to happen, just wanting to have solved the problem on her own and move on without further ado. Her brother made little reaction. There was only so much a scaly face could express, though he did not expect lashings, either. The twins grew up fighting constantly. For them, conflict was normal, and any outside authority didn’t normally step in, unless it was their parents.

Wulvash explained what had happened, Annie also exclaiming her point of view. The Drow remained quiet for the time being, not even complaining about Octavius, but her master mentioned Octavius’ touchy behaviour. Octavius shrugged at the Drakonian.

“I am very nice,” Octavius assured. Perhaps he had a point, he didn’t even complain about Caspara knocking him over from behind. In fact, basically no one seemed to have saw that happen, most of the attention probably having been fixated on the Drakonian drama.

One of the mercenaries, known as Athel, was thrown overboard by Marion and Cedric, Octavius laughing at that. Xavakuun and Caspara chuckled, Griselda having walked by and looked overboard, Athel swimming his way to the docks. Octavius popped over the railings as well, and he performed a queenly wave.

Vanick got the attention of the Drakonians, telling them the consequences of their actions, and what they should do in the future.

“Yes,” Xavakuun simply remarked, but Caspara paid a bit more attention. She was a scaly bitch, but deep down, she did care, it just didn’t show that often.

“Captain Robert was very just for our sake. Do you think it would be a good idea if I went to him and requested their punishments to be less? I honestly didn’t expect any lashings. I got very angry because I was arguing with my brother all morning, and just did not have any patience anymore,” Caspara spoke, waiting for Annie to finish her conversation with the captain.

Vanick didn’t know Captain Robert at a personal level, so Caspara ended up with uncertainty. But, after replying to the girl, the captain and the four robed people became the centre of attention, and there wasn’t any time for further discussion.

So, there were a few less people than expected, but the expedition would go on. Captain Robert wanted mercenaries to go below deck, and await further orders. Caspara figured it was a sign not to pester him any further.

Caspara, Xavakuun, Octavius and Griselda went down with everyone else, and then...

The Commander spoke of their plans. Ten days sailing, with a resupplying stop at the island of Varia. After, they would sail through the straight between Gnaris and Old Sorus, then land at the mouth of the Solace River. A walk to the capital sounded easy enough. In the meantime, security against pirates. Fair enough.

Caspara and Xavakuun couldn’t quite fit below deck, and they had to keep their heads low, much to their displeasure. But, what could they do? Octavius, being short, stretched, raising his arms and enjoying all the space, then watched as Griselda leaned against a wall somewhere to be quiet. However, she was observing everything going on, particularly the Drow, another quiet girl.

Octavius scanned the area, eager to do something, such as gamble with cards or dice, or whatever tabletop game was available. Heading to the mess hall, Octavius soon plopped on a chair and played games with the others.

“Oh hoh hoh! Ya’ll’ul need more folks than this to beat me! Ah! Anyone else wanna play?” Octavius proclaimed, inviting anyone else to join the table he was at. Perhaps more people would come for some games?

Xavakuun ended up sitting down with his back to the wall, tail curled around his hip and lying over his lap.

“This ship sure wasn’t built for us...” Xavakuun mumbled.

“I know! Who did they build it for? Midgets?” Caspara complained, and then...

When she had the chance, Caspara spoke with the captain, and eventually managed to reduce the offenders’ punishment. It did not seem to have done much to improve relations, but at least she did something. It was not long until the twins started bickering about nothing, though.

Griselda kept to herself past two days, alone in her thoughts. She resorted to ignoring the annoying centurion. Octavius didn’t do much, but at times was a bit of an adult child, but he seemed to enjoy board games and cards.

The two contrasting mercenary companies rushed to the deck when the horn sounded. The other mercs did likewise.

“Maybe there will be some humans who actually fight me!” Xavakuun stated eagerly.

“They may not even be human, dummy,” Caspara remarked.

“Oh!” Octavius exclaimed.

Upon reaching the deck, Griselda ran to the railings, placing her hands on them and looking at the incoming vessels.

“Ooo! Two!” Octavius unsheathed his gladius and brandished it, as if beckoning or teasing the enemy. “Vis etiam? Paratus sum!”

After the Captain and Darius exchanged words, everyone got ready to prepare for action. The Drow would remain at the Captain’s side for safety. After the ram hit the hull, knocking a few pirates over, the other ship began boarding action. Arrows and the presence of Drakonians did not intimidate the pirates.

Wulvash went to engage with the armoured giant, whilst Octavius and Griselda turned inward as the shipmate was set ablaze. They looked at each other, then back to the pyromancer.

“Movete!” Octavius yelled, charging forth, delivering a series of wild hacks, uppercuts, push kicks, knee strikes, and headbutts into the pirates in his way.

“Oh-hei! Yeeah!” The shortness but breadth of his gladius meant it was a quick, snappy chopping weapon, allowing him to constantly attack and parry with rapidity.

Cutlasses clicked and thudded against his armour, whilst he had a tendency to chop into heads, incoming blades, and forearms, and stab into stomachs. Upon ramming his gladius hilt-deep into a belly, he always slid the blade out sideways to maximise the cut and spill guts. Other times, he would grab a head and then only mostly slash a neck open, leaving behind a strip of flesh and gripping the head to prevent it from falling off, and then would instantly pommel-smash the head off to make himself seem he was literally punching heads off!

''Fo sperate!'' the centurion grabbed a pirate by the throat then hacked off the top half of his head, the chunk of skull keeping its portion of brain even when it hit the deck. Octavius threw the corpse down and jumped into the fray.

Meanwhile, Griselda had charged, gripping her sword by its handle and blade. Driving her longsword as if a spear whilst receiving a cutlass to the helm, she rammed her blade into a pirate’s gullet. Still keeping one hand gripping the blade, she lifted the pirate over herself, then began swinging low, sweeping her blade across the legs of multiple pirates.

Since she was so heavily armored, she did not bother blocking incoming attacks, her armour did that for her. She relied on bashing her pauldron, headbutting (helm-butting?), and leaning over pirates so push them down and stomp upon them, using her armour’s weight as a tool.

Before moving on, the tall woman looked over at the Drow. She seemed safe, moving further back with the Captain.

After scuffling through the pirates, Octavius and Griselda could confront the pyromancer. Or rather lack thereof. Griselda, having nearly taken a pirate’s head off, wrapped an arm around the pirate’s torso while blood gushed out his throat. Lifting him so that his feet were off the deck, she basically used him as a human shield while scuttling towards the pyromancer while couching her longsword, using it as a short lance.

Octavius, on the other hand, had a rather unorthodox plan. “Incontinens!” he yelled, grabbing cutlasses with his left hand and throwing them at the pyromancer, one time even using a beheaded head as a projectile. Every step or two he took, he threw a cutlass, gradually closing the distance, sometimes throwing cutlasses as other pirates or parrying or chopping at them, keeping them at bay from Griselda. Once Griselda neared the spellwarrior, longsword still couched, human shield ready, Octavius would run around and swing at the pyromancer’s flank...

* * *

“Rip him apart!” Xavakuun cheered for Wulvash as the armoured lizard approached the armoured giant.

“I know what to do, idiot!” Caspara yelled, assuming her brother’s comment was directed at her.

Once the pirates approached, she gripped her battleaxe and war hammer in either hand. She used her war hammer defensively, knocking aside incoming blades or sometimes outright breaking them, or using the fluke to catch a sword. “Weak!” she swung her war hammer into an incoming sword, impact rolling the edge and kinking the blade.

Since she was so much taller than humans, Caspara figured they would be able to dodge her, so she countered with her axe in upward, underhand motions, hacking into ribs, underarm, chin, or stomach. Often, when her battleaxe lodged into a foe, she would snap her jaws over his head then pull her head back, raking her teeth up the face, then smashing her war hammer into the pirate’s skull.

“I’m hungry! I need something to eat!” One unlucky pirate suddenly had his head inside Caspara’s mouth, then she hooked her battle axe around the back of his neck, and while pulling her head back with locked jaws, extended the pirate’s neck up so much that the vertebrae cracked and dislocated. She spat the head out, and continued to fight wildly.

Being so big, Xavakuun did not bother fighting too fast. He relied on a mix of horizontal chops with his battleaxes and low kicks, but being so big, a portion of pirates dodged his attacks easily enough. Those who failed had their knees broken and fell, and then Xavakuun would stomp his heels into stomachs, necks, or chins.

He kicked one pirate in the abdomen, lodging his clawed toes inside his belly, feeling the man’s spine between his toes. He pushed his foot against the pelvis, and so brought the pirate down, then casually put his other foot on the pirate’s sternum, weight causing his guts to squeeze out. Pulling his other foot out the pirate’s abdomen, Xavakuun casually walked over the pirate, then gave his chin a good stomp, driving it backwards with such force it dislocated. Keeping her knees bent, Caspara shifted, hooking the guts with the fluke of her war hammer, then she brought it up and started chewing on the intestines. She pulled her head back, the nest of guts ripping out their bed and flinging in the air, but the end still in her mouth.

Once the melee became face-to-face, Caspara and Xavakuun fought wildly, twirling like the arms of a windmill, constantly attacking with both weapons whilst swinging their tails into legs to trip or stagger foes. Their partial plate armour protected them from some attacks, but it was not long until their exposed scales got chipped or split. Both bled down the face, and both performed knee strikes, elbow strikes, shoulder bashes, and tail-flailing when able.

While Caspara continued her flurry of quick attacks with guts dangling down her mouth, Xavakuun snapped his jaws over a pirate’s head. He then reared in a sideways motion, lifting the pirate off the deck then spitting him out, hurling him away, Caspara decapitating him midair. Relying on mass, Xavakuun trampled foes, pushed them over, broke their knees with stomps, and occasionally briefly gnawed on skulls. So far, they were not faced with any remarkable foe, and so got carried away in the melee.

Xavakuun, however, after pushing down a few pirates, stood upright to see if Wulvash killed his foe yet...

Griselda

Oh, good, I’m not on fire, and I hope that Drow is alright... Her thoughts were interrupted by a pirate who tackled into her, hurling the old gal and her human shield down. Her attacker, a spearman, proceeded to lunging his spear to her throat, where it promptly got jammed in her visor. In retaliation, Griselda grabbed the shaft, and then swung her longsword sideways at the pirate’s knees...

Octavius

“Ohh hoh hoh!” the centurion bellowed at the spellwarrior who had caught the head. It was nice that someone else had some colour to their character! Setting the hair on fire and throwing it at Octavius, the centurion smacked the incoming head away and continued charging. The pyromancer closed the distance as he planned, sword blazing with fire.

“Etia!” Octavius shouted, jumping and raising his sword up high with the blade down, whilst delivering a push kick and whipping his free hand upwards to smack aside the pyromancer’s blade with the back of his cuff...

The Twins

Surprisingly, the pirates were not at all disheartened by Caspara’s brutality or Xavakuun’s power, and even more swarmed the lizards. Xavakuun briefly saw that, apparently, Wulvash’s halberd got caught by the armoured pirate, who held it. This impressed Xavakuun, who did not realize the magic involved.

Panting, Xavakuun knew that even something as big as he couldn’t fend off a million humans. So, he continued his spinning combat style, swinging his battleaxes to and fro one after the other, constantly moving to attack in as many directions as possible to avoid being swarmed. He also continued flailing his tail and stomping into legs.

Caspara, being narrower and lighter, was not strained and continued fighting normally. She spat the guts in her mouth at her foes, and like her brother, whirled about wildly, swinging in many directions with her axe and war hammer and tail, anything to prevent being swarmed.

For now, it seemed the twins would have to face quite a lot of foes preoccupied with them! With Griselda, Wulvash, Octavius, Annie and Zensira busy with their own problems, it was up to someone else to react to horde of pirates attacking Xavakuun and Caspara, or prepare themselves for the incoming second ship...

After hewing the pirate’s shins, he fell to his knees; Griselda yanked the spear out her visor then stabbed the spearhead as if holding a dagger into his sternum. She clutched his front with her sharp gauntlets and clawed up him, and continued the fight.

Octavius and The Twins

He intended to parry the blade, but instead accidentally swatted the fireball first, and then parrie the blade. The impact shook his bones and scorched skin. But his intended kick lunged, striking the spellwarrior in the gut and he fell.

For a moment, Octavius danced from pain, “Oh mama mia, mama mia!” He wanted to throw his gauntlet off, but the pain of peeling his skin off was too much, and he danced a little more. He then realized the strange behaviour of water, but couldn't really focus on that due to his burns. He also noticed Annie’s struggle with her much bigger foe, but was unable to do much right now, save for defending himself from cutlasses. Were it not for his armour, he would surely have been cut to pieces!

Amidst the centurion’s pain, Caspara suddenly leapt upon the pyromancer, her face and arms trickling blood everywhere. She locked her jaws around his throat and thrashing him about as if a chew toy. Before he had time to think, she reared, teeth ripping the sides of his neck open, pulling flesh off his vertebrae, and leaking blood out.

Xavakuun did not fare very well, and he breathed like a furnace from overexertion. He was mapped with cuts to his scales and armour. Amidst his overexertion, he rather clumsily fell. No one was even hitting him; his bulky body just fell. Griselda leapt to his rescue, fending off the pirates before they rammed their blades down the big boy’s throat.

Fighting continued, with archery and sorcery utilized. Once Wulvash defeated his armoured foe with a skull-cracking ironclad headbutt, many pirates lost hope. Xavakuun was grateful for that, and he childishly fell to his bottom, chest expanding with every avalanche of air.

Griselda stepped to the railings, grasping them with her free hand, watching as the other ship snapped asunder and sank. At that, all combat ended. The pirates surrendered.

Below Deck

Octavius and the other wounded went below deck, including pirates.

“Gahh!” Octavius cried as his armour was taken off, blackened skin revealing bright pink flesh and some bleeding veins. He had a long military career, so injuries were not something he was unfamiliar with. But the magic did its work, albeit the scars would remain.

Despite bloodloss, Caspara and Xavakuun had only minor wounds. Once the more severely wounded were treated, the twins had their turn.

* * *

Octavius, Annie and Zensira returned to their bunks. The centurion lied down like a Greek god, one knee bent and up, resting his head on his hand. His helm turned slightly and slowly, and he snickered at the man biased against Drows for some reason, but then turned his attention to the girls.

“So, they couldn’t even kill girls, hunh?” he remarked to Annie and Zensira. “Ah hah hah hah! Hey, little girl,” Octavius briefly pointed to Annie, “I saw some of your fight against the big man. You’re too small and too light to fight such big foes and expect to win. But you’re faster, and shortness means your arms are level to legs. Next time, wait for him to swing, then cut at his fingers or wrist. The force and power of his swing will be used against him. Once his hand is disabled, go for the knees and groin. If he kicks you, cut at the incoming shin. Hack his knees open, cut the tendons at the back of the knees or ankles if you can, thrust into the abdomen or crotch. Take him out, legs-first, where it is harder for him to defend, where he is unused to defending from.”

Pirate Captives - Griselda’s Darkness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIfbOTXioZk

Whilst a few mercs returned to their bunks, Griselda remained, longsword sheathed, hands clasped behind her back. She observed the pirates and the plans for them. She then looked at the Drakonians, but whatever she had in her head, was anybody’s guess.

“Rations for them?” Xavakuun asked.

“Or you can leave a few for us to eat,” Caspara remarked, cocking her head, licking her lips, and snapping her jaws once.

Perhaps Wulvash or anyone else had a comment to that.

Griselda put her hand on Caspara’s shoulder, gesturing the beast to not get carried away with such ideas. The old gal’s old memories, and old ways, swirled in her thoughts.

“How many of them are wolves?” Griselda asked seemingly to herself, scanning the captives, “wolves should live, but not the sheep. Those who are wolves and want to live, should fight the other wolves. And the four strongest wolves left should fight for us, or be left as their own pack on...what’s left of their ship. But which are wolves, which are sheep...”

She unsheathed her longsword, and pointed her blade at the first pirate’s throat, just enough to break skin. “How many did you kill?” If the pirate hesitated, whimpered, moved even a little, failed to make eye contact with her skull-like visor, or did not shed blood, Griselda would nudge her blade through his throat. Anything else, and she would leave him be. If he killed more than five, and evidence of some sort came from the other crew, she would say, ‘Well done.’

She went to the second, placing her blade at his throat. “How about you?” If this pirate could not think straight, or did not kill anyone, wavered, showed any weakness, or could not keep his chin raised, she would drive her sword through his neck. Anything else, he would be left alone. If he killed more than five, Griselda would say, ‘Well done.’

She went to the third. Same implications, same results. She would continued her unusual method, finding out which of the pirates were wolves, and which were sheep, unless someone stopped her. Eventually, at least some of the pirates would understand her selection, if she were allowed to do so. Perhaps some of the leaders here had an idea of, or even knew, about this process. Hell, maybe they even heard of Griselda's exploits.

If allowed to proceed till the end, Griselda would spare the pirates who showed fearlessness or aggression. Of course, if any pirate tried anything funny, or was too aggressive, she would penetrate their throats. If there were more than four that remained, or if she was stopped by someone early (and anyone could stop her if they tried), she would say,
‘Let the wolves duel with their hands, two and a time, until only four remain. The strongest wolves can then decide to fight for us, or return to their...last ship.’
If a pirate refused to fight, Griselda would kill them, unless stopped.

If most pirates no longer contained their ferocity, Griselda would unflinchingly kill them, even if it meant whittling their numbers fewer than four. So long as at least two brave pirates remained, she would say,
‘These are the strongest wolves. Do you fight for us, or do you return to your last ship?’

In the unlikely case that only a single pirate remained alive from her test, Griselda would say,
‘This is the only wolf. Wolves respect wolves. Wolves fight for wolves.’

Undoubtedly, a few or less men could never survive the oceans this far out. It was quite clear Griselda wanted the best of the best to join their ranks, and it was quite clear Griselda was a cold hearted and black-hearted woman, which some may find unnerving.

In the extremely unlikely case all pirates would fail the test, or she just killed them all one by one, well, although it would spare any mercenary from having to cruelly execute pirates, Griselda would be quite upset...

Up above, Wulvash’s halberd prevented another pirate being killed, the arguments of killing them all not applying for the moment. Griselda let her arm drop, sword slipping off halberd, letting the momentum twirl in her wrist and she sheathed.

If a human eats human flesh, it is cannibalism. If a being not a human eats a human, it was also considered cannibalism. This revelation surprised Caspara. Being covered in scales, a scaly face meant that there was only so much expression that could be shown. So, she did not have an inherent ability to read facial expressions.

Taking one last look at the dead pirate, Griselda’s fingers flicked as she performed a slight, brief, dismissive wave of disgust. “Little...monster.” She followed Wulvash.

“Wolves hunt sheep,” Griselda commented to her big guide. She had only a longsword and dagger, which she yielded without issues.

* * *

Elsewhere, Annie’s questions led her to another question when the wounded man appeared, inquiring about watery tentacles. Octavius did not answer Annie’s first question, as attention was focused on Royce, but the centurion did not know the source of the watery tentacles. He shrugged in bed, the drow also not talking very much.

Although they had first picks to spoils, neither of the twins cared much. They weren’t in it for the money or riches, or even the adventure. It was mostly a means to try to find their missing sister, assuming she was still alive.

“Hm... What do you think Luna would like?” Xavakuun asked his sister, snooping around the pirates’ wares.

“What? Oh, probably something magical and mysterious,” she replied, rummaging through some wares here and there. She found some wine and dried meats, and helped herself, but like her brother, didn’t take anything of value. Like most of their kin, they preferred to be cut-off from most of the world. If something wasn’t Drakonian-made, well, why bother?

If there was anything arcane in the pirates’ stores, well, Xavakuun clearly did not find it. Maybe that was best.

“We’re not really here for loot or money. Just to find our sister, if she’s still alive,” Xavakuun had said to the other crewmates. “Take whatever you want. Oh, and don’t be afraid of my sister here. She has a sharp tongue, but she really cares deep down.”

“Aw, fffuck!” Caspara shouted, having tripped on something and smacked her jaw against the floor. She stroked her chin as she sat up. “I just wanna KILLL something!” Sudden, unexpected pain was a great mood modifier. On the bright side, at least the siblings weren’t bickering this time.

After the loot was done with, the pirate captain’s wishes were honoured.

The political mystery up above was not noticed by the twins, the centurion, or the gray maiden. Perhaps someone would find out details about it?

Eventually, the fortresses of Gara came to view. Once the ship docked, many left to spend time in Varia.

“Goood evening!” Octavius exclaimed to the skies as he left the ship. “Fighting and living sure makes me thirsty! Wouldn’t wanna...waste the day in jailll... Hah-hahh!” Like most others, he headed for the tavern, unless something significant happened along the way.

As for the twins, they remained on the dockyard for now.

“I wonder if we can find someone with a logbook or timesheet or something. Perhaps Luna took a ship some time ago that was noted somewhere somehow,” Xavakuun remarked, unsure of where to start his next investigation.

“Because obviously there’s just gonna be a book with passengers’ names in it? Of every ship that passes by? That Luna just happened to be on?” Caspara bitterly mocked.

“Well, we have to try something. How hard is it to not notice a gangly, albino Drakonian? Even if the news is several months late, I’m sure a brief note or clue would be recognizable in regards to an albino Drakonian. Let’s ask around, see if there’s anything...”

Xavakuun would wander the docks, asking various Gara personnel who looked seaworthy if they happened to know about logs regarding passengers and ships, if there was any clue about an albino Drakonian...

Brig

“You were quiet during my test,” Griselda remarked in the sellsail captain’s direction, hands clasped behind her back, or perhaps she was talking to herself? She stood tall next to her bars, skeletal-like visor seemingly portraying her constant scanning of the environment. Despite being behind bars, she remained solemn. “Your...little monsters...surrendered much faster than they should have. Sheep in wolf pelts.”

She couldn't know why he was quiet during her test, and it wasn't something she could keep to herself.

The Search

Things didn’t go well at first. One person even ran away. When that happened, Xavakuun looked at his sister.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything! It was you!”

After a little bicker or two, they happened upon a guard who didn’t know what an albino was. They were just about to give up, until the guard seemed to recall someone from a long time ago. Although Luna's shade of scales was never clarified, and her appearance into the setting may rely upon a certain individual, how could the big oaf not accept the information?

Xavakuun produced a few silver coins for the guard. Caspara rolled her eyes.

“Do you really think he’ll show you anything?” she asked quietly.

“Caspara, shh! You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“We could of been in a tavern by now...”

Only time would tell.

The Brig

“That is clearly not what happened when we fought,” Griselda replied. “If your crew could kill me quickly, they would have done it. They did not. The exact opposite happened. Even after the battle, they chose not to fight.” She took a few steps to the side, and clasped her hands behind her back. If her friend had said anything...

“If there are wolves among your crew...I would have...allowed them to be what they are meant to be,” she spoke as she slightly spread her arms. Once she reached the side of her cell, she turned her head and pointed. “I would have found the strongest. After I dealt with the weakest, of course…” She clenched her fist, then pulled it against her breastplate. “Then, those who are wolves, would fight for their freedom. After they killed their weakest members...only the strongest remain. The wolves would join us, or I would set them free on their ship.”

Griselda relaxed, and let her arm drop. She walked to the front of her cell as she clasped her hands behind her back, and just stared through her skeletal visor. “What would you have done?”

The Tavern

Octavius proudly scuttled into the big tavern, and soon saw a Dwarf stand tall on a chair, and gave it a good stomp, and announce the most exhilarating adventure since Hamlet. The response was...not as eventful as he hoped for. He was told to get off the chair.

“I’ll go!” Octavius stated, and raised his arm. “I go!” Redundancy still counted as participation, after all.

After a mermaid chugged her drink, she made a deal with the cap-a-pied Drakonian and his faithful servant. Though, the departure of Wulvash and his watery mage was quite a disappointment. The power of him, and the magical prowess of his slave, were pivotal in their victory against the pirates. Maybe, someday, they would meet again?

The centurion did not bother taking a seat. Despite being of unremarkable height, he liked to be active and visible. He went to the sea shanty guy, and sung along with wordless grunts while swinging his arm along the tune, then suddenly walked off to find something fun to do.

But then, a single volunteer was found. The mermaid. Despite her sloshed state, she accepted the offer to the Ashlands. Octavius, who had bought a tankard of ale, spun around and gave her a thumbs up.

Io! Well done!” Octavius raised his tankard to her (if she did likewise, their mugs would clink), then spilled everything onto his visor while he tilted his head back. He did not even open his visor; he just dumped all his ale over his visor as he wiggled to and fro a bit. “Rrrarrr!”

The Brig

“My captors are more wolves than sheep. For that, I respect them. But, my time will come.”

The Docks

Caspara’s eyes widened at the revelation. Out of all races, Dwarves were the least she expected. Her whitey sister would have been quite the tower compared to them!

“No. She’s our sister. We’re just looking for her, make sure she’s alive. She went off to find out why our race can’t use magic, but also to discover what happened to the Ashlands,” Xavakuun answered. He turned his head to his other sister. “See? Don’t be so brash all the time.”

“Well, whatever, you’re always a little slow, so you make me impatient.”

“That’s exactly what Luna always says...”

“So it’s true.”

“No, you’re just copying a smarter person.”

“Well, at least I’m smart enough to know that some magical orb won’t blacken an entire continent. Luna kept saying some fiery magical orb created the Ashlands. It’s just a fact you’re usually wrong, that’s it.”

After Vanick finished with Aria and the two others, a tall burly man avalanched his way through patrons. The created tension lead to Arias hip being hurt, and worse, she spilled her drink over her.

While Aria readied her magic, Octavius turned around, arms floppy, visor and breastplate wet from the beer he spilt over himself. The aggravator approached and sent a big punch towards the centurion’s visor. Although the visor would block serious damage, it was still worn over the face, and the impact would still hurt.

Although his left arm did not have a gauntlet and mostly healed magically from the burns, Octavius was used to throwing punches with his left arm anyways. Though, being shorter, it was inevitable his attacker’s punch would land first.

“Rrahh!” Octavius exclaimed as he swung a left uppercut from hip level. After, he would throw a right cross towards his attacker’s sternum...

At least Vanick’s disappointment could not be as bad as what Griselda did. Sarah nearly got a bottle to the face, Joric shoved someone down, and Aria’s magic did not seem to dissuade pubgoers from the fight.

Meanwhile, the punch into Octavius’ visor did hurt, as it bounced backwards against his nose, and caused him to rear a bit. Nevertheless, his attacker had it worse, obviously, and Octavius’ retaliation worked. Action escalated all around.

“Oh, mama mia! Mama mia!” He would have to forcefully make his way through the melee. He shoved, pauldron-bashed, palm-striked, and push kicked; hopefully, he did not hit the barrier-surrounded woman by accident. If all went well, he would make it out the tavern. Perhaps Annie and Aria would make it, too. The paladin and sailor over yonder, being farther away, may have a harder time, but only time would tell.

The Escape

Amidst the brawl and Aria’s magic and complaints, and a wannabe witch hunter, Octavius managed very well, armour withstanding bottles and chairs, and presumably anything else that he may have encountered. He made it towards the exit, not having to deal with maids or cooks armed with utensils, or guards, or drunk mermaids.

Speaking of mermaids, he would be surprised if Aria indeed flung herself forth via her magic! He would place a hand over his brow to watch the flying fish, and then walk on as if nothing happened...

If anything else occurred afterwards, the centurion would go along without much vigour, but would always be ready for fighting. He preferred to be behind the scenes and a bit silly, only to suddenly spring like a tiger, but only if necessary.

The Twins

After getting the clue of Luna sailing with Dwarves, Xavakuun and Caspara would probably not be able to get much more info. Nevertheless, they would probably be preoccupied with their own bickering and chaotic planning most of the time.

They would certainly fight their Company’s foes, Caspara being the aggressive skirmisher, and Xavakuun the headstrong, medium-armoured tank.

Griselda

Presumably, she would remain in her cell until able to re-intro in the adventure! Or, perhaps she would be released, then ordered to remain defensive on the ship. Indeed, it may be better to keep someone like her to defend the ship, but it was up to the captain and commander.

Edd replied to the mermaid elsewhere. Meanwhile, rowdy bar escaped, Annie slid to a stop, and then she and the others were approached by some guards. A few guards went off to contain the violence, and the heroes were asked of what happened.

After Vanick and Annie replied, Octavius gesticulated with his hands, and perhaps interrupted the girl’s storytelling.

“Oh, I don’t know exactly what happened! I was only enjoying myself. Good drink, good fun, good inn, everyone liked me…” He looked at Joric, then raised an arm to gesticulate someone much taller than himself, “tall, burly man...messy black hair and moustache, he started everything, for some reason! Maybe he mistake me for someone else?”
