As Jagex takes more and more words off of the profanity filter's list of bad words, do you think that someday that there won't even be a profanity filter in the game anymore? I have my profanity filter on for a reason and it is not to see curse words even though I see plenty of them with it on now. I might as well turn my profanity filter off at this point. Does anybody else here feel this way too?

I imagine there will always be some type of filter. At the end of the day, regardless of one's opinion of profanity, there are simply some words such as racial slurs and highly offensive words that absolutely don't belong even among friends.

Even if Jagex lightens it up over time, I don't see certain things ever going entirely unfiltered.

I'm with
Jones
on this; I think there will always be words that remain on the list to be filtered for those who have their filter enabled. The game and its playerbase/ target audience have both grown up so I see why the filter is being lightened some. I play with my filter off, personally, as a word itself is generally not an issue. It depends on the entire conversation and the intent of what is being said to make something "offensive". The are obvious exceptions to that, but as a general rule... it mostly holds true.

Don't forget that you can ignore players using language you don't want to see if it becomes a problem, or send a report if it escalates to players that are being deliberately offensive or intending to be upsetting with their language.

I concur with both Jones and Spear. In reality, the people that play RuneScape are from all age groups and backgrounds. With that being said, the filter is needed to give those involved a choice to either have it "ON" or "OFF". As long as that choice is always there, then we are catering to everyone's needs.

You are also able to ignore players and report, if necessary, like Spear stated.

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt there's absolutely zero of a filter once you disable it, so there's nothing left for Jagex to "lighten up".

A personal friend I've known for years who also plays this and me have absolutely no limits on the amount of shit we talk to each other just because of the type of sense of humour we have - nothing we can or do say to each other ever gets censored.

There's a reason why we mainly talk in PM because anyone could easily take it out of context due to lack of tone in text to give you a general idea. Hell, if you stumbled across us and didn't know us when we're deep into talking shit to each other you'd think we hated each other but that couldn't be any further from the truth.

^ Then why does "Rammernaut" in my notes change to "Rammernau*"? I've got my profanity filter off. There's still some very silly stuff being censored. The Winner of September 2019's MUPAQ™ Award is

Do you notice an unhelpful post without it trolling too much? Tell us about it here, it might become the next winner!

I don't consider that as words being censored but rather the system used to censor as being shit. I can tell you right now you can say quite literally anything that anyone with a weak spine would want censored IE. racist and whatever else terms - I have no issue saying them to give you examples but I'm not going to take that chance because I have no doubt I'd have this post hidden regardless of the context.

I've no idea why it does that either because, if I can remember, if you type "hm... (whatever text) and it also censors that too - maybe they set it to censor attempts to circumvent the system when the filter was forced but forget to update/remove that now that the filter is effectively pointless.

I'm aware that there's no filter if it's disabled.

I took the OP's question to mean the current, existing "on" version of the filter being generally lightened up over time.

All the same, still stands that so long as there is a choice between on/off it is somewhat of a moot point - just my 2c.
