Title was meant to be "T91+ Shields/Defenders How?" but accidently pressed enter and it didn't give a preview option, just posted the whole thread. If a mod can change it, thanks.

We have T92 weapons for every combat style, main-hands, 2Hs, and off-hands. Armor too, so I was expecting eventually we will get T92 shields, but then I realized with the way abilities are handled, they wouldn't be sought after anywhere as much as T92 weapons.

Weapons - At high tiers, each tier is roughly ~1% more DPS and they're always used. All offensive abilities scale with ability damage so tier makes a significant different.

Shields - Each tier adds +0.1% PvM damage reduction, so a T92 gives 9.2% reduction compared to T90s 9%.

When it comes to abilities, shield tiers improve them at intervals which makes T91-T99 shields redundant over T90

Debilitate: Gets +0.6s duration per 10 tiers, or 6s at T90. It wouldn't get another 0.6s unless the shield was T100, but combat levels won't allow that.

Barricade: Reaches max duration of 10s at T90, so it wouldn't gain any more time.

Shield Bash: Damage takes into account defense and weapon damage as well, so a tiny shield armor value different becomes almost non-existent

Resonance: Difference is very insignificant due to how long its CD is and at any tier it blocks an attack and heals 50% of it, while tiers add an extra 0.5%. A T92 shield would heal 96% of the damage opposed to 95% of a T90.

Normally shields are released in intervals of 10 tiers, so there's a significant difference between them as Delibite and Barricade gain duration. The only exception are the Spirit Shields, but they have a passive effect that makes them more valuable than T90 shields.

So whats the problem?

T92 equipment is hard to obtain but worth it if you can take on tough PvM or have the cash for it, but in the case of shields, they don't have much benefit between T91-T99 and if they're as hard as other T92s to get, they'll be dead content on release.

Defenders have a similar problem, in that the 10 tier gap is also needed to make the next one feel significant as its tiers are halved. On top of that, each high-tier defender requires sacrificing an expensive weapon and you wont be able to get it back or trade it if another defender comes out. So...

Let's say T92 Amina Defender/Reprisor/Rebounders come out, made by combining a Anima Sigil dropped 1/50 by Telos as long as you have a Kalphite Defender/Repriser/Rebounder.

To create it you need to combine it with an Off-hand Eldritch Crossbow, Khopesh, or Imperium Core, an off-hand just like the other tiers. Now think about it...

Who in their right minds would do that?! You already spent 24M-100M on the T90 defender's weapon component and its use is extremely niche. You don't get your sacrificed weapon for the T90 defender either. A T92 Anima Defender adds +1 damage and shield tier, that's it.

Tl'dr:

Future shields/defenders above T90 shouldn't simply a +1-9 tier increase while being very hard to obtain, as they'd be dead content on sight due to important abilities being unaffected by the increase due to 10-tier ability intervals and niche-ness. They should either...

1. Have some passive effect top remain desirable, like a T95 shield may not have an increase in Delibitate or Barricade duration over T90, but comes with a passive effect that reduces GCD by 0.6s when activating defensive abilities.

2. Make higher tier shields/defenders an upgrade that isn't that hard to obtain. Example: New Dragon Dragon boss under Kethsi very rarely drops new T92 Elder Dragon weapons, while often dropping Dragon Metal Shards which with enough can be used to upgrade a shield or defender to T92. It would be a small advantage, but not an extremely expensive or difficult one to get compared to T92 weapons/armor.

3. Have the next shields/defender be T100 and equip able at 99, so the shields tier difference increases the effectiveness of abilities noticeably compared to T90. To avoid completely de-valuing T90 shields/defenders, have it be an upgrade. Example: New "Clockwork Wyrm" slayer monster drops blueprints to upgrade a T90 shield/defender to T100, but requires high-end components such as Scraps of Scripture, Noxious weapon parts/components, or Anima Orbs so one would have be very proficient at PvM to upgrade it.

Wouldn't recommend making such a tier jump for weapons.
