Ive spent ~30 minutes searching the forum for someone else asking this question and i didnt find anyone, i also checked the "M&S Rework Big List of Stuff" and it has it on there, but no information on what theyre doing with it.

Protean Bars are my 1st concern about the Smithing update.
will they be better since theres new ore/bars?
worse? for whatever reason.
will they be treated the same and be unchanged? for balancing reasons.
or what the plan here? I have 1,600 saved for next dxp will have more before then, but if M&S is out before the next DXP i need to know wether theyre gonna be better or worse.
which leads to Concern #2

Portable Forges, theyre on the Big List of Stuff as well but no context.
ive heared Rumors(keyword) that theyre being changed to something else thats not forge related?
aside from that rumor, if its on the big list of stuff that M&S breaks, what are the plans for it... thats another factor for dxp that i need to decide and waste the 1600 bars on a forge now, or .... if theyre staying then later....

Granted ill probably play the upcoming beta... and that should answer these questions, not gonna do anything too hasty until then. Still would like to know the plans for these.

Okay, I don't know about Protean bars, but as for Portable forges...

They will be removed. Players with Portable forges will be given something that will allow them to obtain new Portables of their choosing, or the item that will replace Portable forges. For free. This item is slightly superior to the forges(at least on paper), so everything should be fine. This was mentioned in a livestream, but I don't recall which one off the top of my head. It is archived, so feel free to peruse at your leisure.

If you really want potentially higher xp, hold on to the forges, and then enjoy the replacement item you'll get when the time comes. However, we're not getting M&S Rework until January at the earliest(If everything goes smoothly with the beta, and Jagex doesn't have to make any changes beyond small adjustments and fixes). So unless you care way too much about a bit of extra xp, you might as well use them up now.

Protean bars are supposed to work the same as they do pre rework but give slightly better exp, you won't be able to use them on a portable forge though.

Portable forges won't exist and are supposed to be replaced by the luminite injector.

Luminite Injectors are a new item which can be purchased with respect in artisans workshop
Using a Luminite Injector causes the whole workshop to get a buff for 5 minutes. All players smithing anywhere in the building generate 1 additional progress (modified by heat) every time they make a smithing strike. This applies to all smithing in the building, including burial equipment. (This is approximately a 10% increase in smithing XP speed.)

I think they'll give a choice of a new portable or an injector for any pre rework forges.

Luminite injector! That's the name of it. I forgot what it was called. xD

Protean bars aren't made of Runite; they're made of (if anything) Protean.

That means they exist outside the standard scale of metals effected by the M&S Rework. Proteans scale, and grant XP depending on your level: since the plan is to keep XP rates in the Mining & Smithing skills as close to equal (slightly better if anything) to the old rates as possible, Proteans will probably remain untouched.

The idea is that you should get roughly the same XP from smithing a T90 metal post-rework as you'd currently get from smithing Rune now; Rune itself is being demoted to a T50 metal since items made from it are also T50; so if you're concerned with XP rates, as long as you smith with a level-equivalent metal you should always get equivalent (maybe slightly better) XP rates after the rework.

Portable Forges are being removed, but PF were never needed to smith Protean to begin with: people simply interacted with PF while using Protean to benefit from the bar-saving feature and the bonus XP. Post-rework, you'll be able to get those benefits from interacting with a forge/anvil in the Artisan's Workshop provided there's an active Luminite Injector on the go.

Instead of PF themselves being unreliable (disappearing, not being replaced, being blocked from placement), the anvils/forges at Artisan's Workshop will always be there. However you'll only get the bonus if someone pops a Luminite Injector, rather than being guaranteed if you use a PF whenever one is present. However it's likely that LI will be on the go around the clock: players are likely to pop them as regularly as they do Pulse Cores on W84, and they cannot be interrupted by trolls. In fact a lot of the methods trolls currently use to mess with portable users on W84 simply won't work in Artisan's Workshop because of the ways that AW is different, so doing lots of Smithing will undoubtably become much more pleasant and tolerable.

Thanks for all of the responses. most giving valid, unique information, and these 'Luminite Injectors' I assume you wont have the small chance to save a bar... but thats minor, and from what i can tell we're all on the same page that protean bars will work the same, if not more experience since theyre currently capped at 85(rune) and new armor will be crafted at 90 so we might get Slightly more from the bars.

Overall even if i lose the chance to save a bar, the Double Experience coming potentially febuary will likely be more efficient than using them now.

Again, ill have to join this upcoming beta to test further Thanks for the responses.
