This is an Elite Skill concept that a friend of mine and I have been brewing for some time.

Archaeology Skill Concept:

Elite Skill: Requires 80 Mining, 80 Crafting and 80 Thieving

Acquire this skill by visiting Kudos (Fossil) Island and speaking to the Dig Lead Coordinator if you have 80 Mining, Crafting and Thieving. He will give you a Findings Pouch and show you a short tutorial on how the skill works.

Tool belt Category: Tools required to be added to the Tool belt to perform Excavations:

Specimen Brush
Rock Pick
Trowel
Spade

Mechanics:

Open your abilities and find the Excavate ability. Using this ability will perform a several second animation before placing you in an instance in a region randomly generated using the scenery from the area youĺre in. You will be given 10 minutes to locate and excavate all 5 relics in the site.

Use your spade to dig on plots. Digging in each spot will give one of the following messages:

1: Nothing here, keep looking. (There is no relic nearby)
2: A few Small Fragments. Youĺre getting close. (There is a relic within 5 spaces of that spot)
3: Several Medium Fragments. Something is nearby. (There is a relic within 3 spaces of that spot)
4: Lots of Large Fragments. Youĺre right on top of it! (There is a relic within 1 space of that spot)
5: Youĺve found a relic! (There is a relic on that spot)

Each time you dig up a plot, it will change appearance to show that it has been checked and what was there:
1: Nothing: An empty hole.
2: Small Fragments: There will be small shards scattered around the plot.
3: Medium Fragments: There will be medium shards in the ground.
4: Large Fragments: There will be a few large shards sticking out of the dirt.
5: Relic: There will be a whole relic sticking out of the dirt.

At any time during an excavation, you may right click on a plot with Fragments and choose ôSalvageö to collect the Fragments. This will cause the Relic connected to these Fragments to despawn along with all other Fragments connected to that Relic. Salvaging Large Fragments gives more Fragments than Salvaging Medium Fragments, which gives more Fragments than Salvaging Small Fragments. The first option when clicking on a Relic will be ôExcavateö. Excavating a Relic takes time; this time is dependent on what type of Relic it is, as well as your Archaeology level. Relics may be Savaged instead of Excavated, giving the same number of Fragments as Salvaging Large Fragments.

When digging up a Relic, each tick has a chance to damage the Relic. The more times it is damaged, the less xp received from fully harvesting it. If a single Relic is damaged more than 4 times, it will break, giving Fragments instead and 50% Relic Harvesting xp. Harvesting a Relic gives Fragments, experience, and a Relic. Each category of Relic has its own tiers: Common, Uncommon and Rare.

Hotspots:

Hotspots are locations you can track down where rare Relics can be found more frequently. Normally, excavating rewards mostly common Relics with a rare chance to find a rare Relic. Hotspots have a greater chance to reward rare Relics and will always have at least 1 rare Relic.
To find a Hotspot, open your Abilities and find the ôLocate Hotspotö ability and activate it. Your character will scout the area and determine the location of the nearest Hotspot. You will be given the cardinal direction you should head in, as well as a message designating how far away you are.
There are always 12 Hotspots on the world. Each time a Hotspot is excavated, it will disappear and a new one will spawn somewhere random in the world. Hotspots will also randomize every day at reset. A board at the Digsite can be viewed containing a map of the world showing active Hotspots. This map will add the location of 1 Hotspot per hour up to a maximum of 6. Every daily reset, the board will reset with the Hotspots and have 3 random Hotspots pinned on it.

Excavation Team: As you train Archaeology, each day you may visit the Dig Site to encounter NPCs that you can recruit for your Excavation Team. You may have 10 total team members, though only 2 may be brought to a Dig at a time. The higher your Archaeology level, the more likely youĺll attract better members. Each member has a random combination of stats summed from its 3 stat categories.

5 Basic Team Member Variants:

Bodyguard: Takes agro from enemies and fights.

Precision: How much damage it deals.
Discipline: How much health it has.

Precision: How closely to a Relic it marks Fragments.
Expertise: Advises closer to exact direction of Relic after finding Fragments.

Precision: Increases how quickly Archaeologist tracks down Relics.
Expertise: Increases xp received from Archaeologist Excavating Relics.
Discipline: Increases movement speed and how quickly Relics are excavated by Archaeologist.

There are 7 categories of Relics:

General: Found in and around human cities/towns and shallow Wilderness.

Elven: Found in Elven Lands.

Dwarf: Found in Dwarven areas.

Aviansie: Found in Godwars.

Goblin: Found in Goblin settlements.

Dragonkin: Found in Kethsi and metallic dragon dungeons.

Mahjarrat: Found in deep Wilderness.

Pantheon: Found in Desert

Resources found during Excavations:

Relics: The primary resource being gathered. Used to create Artifacts. There are 5 guaranteed Relics you can find per Excavation.

Fragments: A secondary Resource. Used in conjunction with Relics to create Artifacts. Typically find a few thousand per Excavation.

Rare Finds: An item rarely rewarded at the end of an Excavation. Each Excavation Category (General, Elven, Etc.) Has its own Rare Finds that can be found.

Creating Artifacts:

As you level up in Archaeology, you can discover learn, and research new Artifact recipes.

Each Category of Relic has its own unique Artifacts that can be made using the Relics, Fragments, and tertiary items.

Artifacts fall into 2 Categories. Rare Artifacts and Basic Artifacts.

Rare Artifacts are items you can build with unique effects and abilities that you can take advantage of.

Basic Artifacts are items simply made to consume Relics and Fragments for a chunk of xp. These can be sold to the Museum for a sum of coin dependent on the tier of the Basic Artifact:

Basic Artifact 0: 500 Fragments; The museum may be interested in this. (5k)

Basic Artifact 1: 1000 Fragments, 1 Uncommon Relic; The Museum would give me a small reward for this. (25k)

Basic Artifact 2: 5000 Fragments, 3 Uncommon Relics; The Museum would give me a sizable reward for this. (100k)

Basic Artifact 3: 10,000 Fragments, 5 Uncommon Relics; The Museum would give me a large reward for this. (250k)

Basic Artifact 4: 25,000 Fragments, 10 Uncommon Relics, 1 Rare Relic (Relics must be Mahjarrat or Dragonkin only); The Museum is going to want to see thisů (750k)
