In the last Q&A you occasionally passed up names that you thought should be checked for Moderator potential and I'm wondering if you'll do the same in this Q&A (Preferably for me!)? I'm an avid helper in the Quest Forum (Check my Profile!) and have been for the past year or more. While my efforts aren't solely to get Modship I feel because of the obscurity of the Quest Forum people who help there are often ignored! I'd also like to say it's fantastic to see the increase in JMod activity in the AH Forum, good move there
===
The problem here is that if i check your account - we'll probably have 10 more people requesting the same on this thread - errrm so yep no comment but leave it with me.
Questers make great P Mods - I wouldn't worry about that - and we will find you, we have some great tools that help us find good people. :)
Glad to see you like the support in AH - I'll let Customer Support know it's appreciated!

Is Friday the 13th the best day for a Q&A? It would be unlucky if the pizza wasn't delivered... *Evil Laugh*

I think you are on to something - the pizza hasn't arrived yet.
Hmmmm.

These are the only type of Jagex interaction I believe is useful. Looking forward to that podcast coming out tomorrow as well. Honestly why are you guys so secretive, it seems to me that if you just gave a short list of what was being worked on – without any details – there would actually be an interest in the future of RS. You have no idea how much I look forward to the BTS.
I used to be a Fmod until Mod Mat K took a rant to the knee and ignored me
Also I sent a PQ before I was demodded and still have not received an answer, hence the now being ignored part, any chance Jane/Stevew could through me a bone – Putting my bitterness behind me. (I assumed you’d hide this anyway)
===
Glad to hear you enjoy BTS - we have a few ideas to make that even better in the future so keep an eye out!
I can't really comment on why you may have lost your F mod - I'm sure it was communicated to you at the time?

Q.) Mod SteveW – The mod teams have moved direction a lot. Do you think that the name ‘moderator’ is still appopriate for these groups of players? I’ve heard them being referred to as more of ‘ambassadors’ now. Have you ever thought about changing the name?
===
Great question - I don't like the term 'moderator' at all - it makes me think of being told off, controlled etc. - maybe that's just me.
I think it's more suitable to F Mods - because they do 'moderate' in it's literal sense - but P Mods need a new name.
I think the community should choose - if we do ever change it I'll run it as a competition.. :)

1.) Now I know this question is on everyone mind... Would you guys still be looking for Volunteer Player Mods? I know I have been here for a long time and I just want to extend my help even further. I love this game and I love the Community of this game and to be given that chance or to know that option will still be there would be great.
2.) What do you look for in a Player Mod as far as Reporting? Because I know I don't go looking for trouble as I am to busy making Events doing clan work.
3.) What if you do not have to many Reports? I know some people really don't go looking for trouble and stuff.
4.) Do you have to be really really Active in the Game? Because I know life gets in the way when it comes to RuneScape and you can't always predict the future. So does activeness is a requirement to be a Player Moderator? I know I wasn't so active when I 1st joined RuneScape & the years Following that.
===
1.
We are always looking for P Mods but not in the volumes that we have in the past - keep a secure account, have fun, don't be an idiot and we will spot you!!
2.
Reporting serious rule breaking is always helpful, but also knowing when something is better dealt with by the ignore list. Volume of reports isn't something we look at in potential P Mods.
3.
Not a problem - being active in the community trumps reporting every time!
4.
All we look for in activity is fairly regular log-ins- just because if someone doesn't log in regularly then they wouldn't know if their account has been compromised.

I have a few questions in regards to player moderator recruitment. I feel that in recent years, the guidelines for just who is invited to be a player moderator have become a bit vague (probably related to chat filter removal and other updates).
1) Can you tell us what exactly it is that the CM team looks for in reports these days? How much does accurate reporting weigh into getting an invite versus a players' community activity?
2) When I play the game, I report misconduct as I see it but try to limit reports to more serious situations. It seems that you are looking for quality over quantity in reports, but I'm curious as to how you view players who actively seek out cheaters to report (such as gold sellers and bots). Would this help or hinder someone's chances of being invited?
3) Obviously account security for player moderators is very important. What does the CM team look for to determine an accounts security? How often do you recommend changing your pass?
4) Lastly, as a 7 year veteran, what do you recommend I do better to increase my chance of being invited? I would love the chance to be a part of the PMod community
===
1.
Community involvement carries far more weight than reporting.
2.
Again, not something we really look into too much - but someone reporting a lot when there is no rule breaking isn't likely to me made a Mod - we have to think 'what would happen if this person could mute ...'
3.
P Mod account security checks are basically:
+ Never been shared / hijacked
+ Recoveries set
+ Email set
+ No proxy log-ins
(rinse and repeat on every account the person has created)
4.
We can't make everyone a P Mod, all I can suggest is sticking to the rules, enjoying the game and joining in with community stuff!

Will there ever be a way to travel back to tutorial island like a boat ride to it or something possibly in the future?
===
We are more likely to focus on things that newer players will find engaging - we understand that existing players would like to go there for nostalgia reasons, but at the end of the day we need to focus efforts on things that will have the most impact.
I have heard a rumour that you will be able to see (but not travel to) the island from a certain vantage point in the future ... but it is just a rumour ... ;)

There has been a lot of demodding, and (to me) it feels like the demodding has outbalanced the modding. Are there any plans on giving players the opportunity to become "noticed" as a responsible player, perhaps willing to become a mod? I know about the old "Are you community focused" thread, maybe there are some other ways to find those willing to be added to the moderator team? I mean, myself (and the majority of people I know) have played the game fairly, been involved with the community, helped others, and I'm wondering if I will ever get the chance to be investigated for that.

===

It's true we have demodded a lot recently - but only with sound reason, for example P Mods not reading our guidelines and then potentially muting people for the wrong reasons.

We are always thinking up new ways to find good people, but there will always be a lot of people who have played a long time, played fairly and helped out - we have to keep a sensible balance between the volume of P Mods and regular players.

One of the things we are looking at is an aspirational system, where people could effectively be noticed for P Mod vetting by carrying out activities that we think are supportive. It needs a lot of thought so that we don't introduce something which could be abused, but I do think that if we can get it going it will help a lot more people like yourself. :)

Guess your starting to find me annoying...but I don't give a crap tbh, the longer you ignore the harder I start pushing.
Address the WHOLE Dutch community if you are willing to find the time or are capable to...or else send someone who is willing and capable....treat your >>customers<< as adults for a change and not as a bunch of "dumb kids" that are pleased with every nonsense / lies you ( Jagex ) try to let us believe.
Find the time or let someone find the time to address this thread....and I am not asking for myself but for a WHOLE COMMUNITY...meaning loads of your CUSTOMERS.
===
As the Dutch community have never had the game translated, it's a fair enough assumption that our Dutch players have a fairly good understanding of English.
We don't have specific Dutch support right now, but our Dutch players do have their own forums and they are of course welcome on the English forums.
We don't have any immediate plans to recruit Dutch staff, but we will always try to provide fantastic and inclusive community support for everyone, regardless of the players native language.

To mod stevew.
Hey am i allowed to upload videos from runefest to youtube? I don't mean the insider sessions but other things like you playing something with other J mods in the 1st floor :D(you where throwing a chicken or something) Or do i need the permission of everyone who's in the video?
===
Wait, I'm on video throwing a chicken .... eeek.
OK it's fine to upload your video, if people complain about the video and it contains scenes from our game, it will be automatically hidden and passed to us as copyright owners, however we review these regularly, and provided there is nothing in your video about cheating etc. - we nearly always release those videos back to their owners - at which point it's viewable again and it should then stay until you remove it.

Is luring people into the wilderness for the purpose of killing them for their items against the rules? If not, why isn't it against the rules if its not
===
We don't want people to be tricked into things and lose their stuff but it's no great secret that the Wilderness is a dangerous place - anyone who goes there must understand that there is a risk.
We could probably make a million warnings and rules to try and protect people but that would just be horrible to navigate through for the average player.
It's all about common sense, and as a fail safe if you do fall victim to some nasty scam you do have the option to report it so we can look into it.

Steve, as before there was a thread months ago which you could kind of Apply, to be a Player Moderator, are there any thoughts on bringing a thread like this back as I would love apply and to help the community out as much as possible

===

That thread was something that was a good idea but just didn't work - we found that the quality of applicants on the thread was no different (in fact usually much worse) than if we just picked names at random.

@Mod Stevew: Apologies if I am misinformed, but it has been said that some very, very respectable, hard-working employees at Jagex moved on rather recently, and in particular, I heard a fair few of them moving on from Community Management.

Although it is evident that there still are awesome faces left for the community to interact with and get taken care of by, I am respectfully curious to know, has such recent changes to staffing caused any holes to how the Community Management team functions?

Also, considering both Jagex Moderators I considered to be events-focused have seemed to have moved on, who will be supporting the Events Community now, if that is to your knowledge?

===

The community team will shortly be changing our working hours so that we will be around much more during peak American play times.

That change is a great thing for our players as it means we can interact and support much better, but for some people in the Community team the change in shift hours just didn't suit them. As a result some people have chosen to leave us, but we still have a large and dedicated team!

As for events, that would pretty much be Mod Timbo and Mod Drebin - but we are trying to get the whole team more involved in everything - so rather than having a mod for 'task a' and a mod for 'task b' - it will be more of a team effort.

So in the case of events, Mod Drebin might come up with an awesome event, but the whole team chip in to get dev done, promote it, create social network campaigns etc.

How come that the Account help forum actually is working as to customer support and actually providing answers customers can use, but the rest of the forums is failing at this.

I am especially aiming at complaints that are being ignored and not addressed to clarify things if not provide feedback (for both parties), leading to multiple threads about the same subject pop-up and leading to unhappy if not angry (out of frustration) customers.

Any plans on actually starting with the customer service you (Jagex) claim to be so proud off that actually is how customer service should be?

===

The Customer Support section of the forums has dedicated support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If Customer Support issues are posted outside of that forum group there is a good chance they will be missed - after all our forums are very busy.

If we see feedback and complaints that are not Customer Support related (i.e. game related) we do try to read them and pass them on, and answer where we can. Very often we use FAQ's and sticky threads if a common theme is being discussed, this isn't ideal but is probably the best way to communicate with a large audience as opposed to posting on individual threads.

are the level up fireworks going to go back to the original ones? The new ones don't show that much of an achievement, and the original ones also looked better.

===

Hi, the majority of feedback we have seen is that the new fireworks are bolder, larger and much more liked by people.

As such, we don't plan to change them - but you are entitled to your opinion of course!

Mod Stevew !!!!!

Hi there :) You changed your stance on pmods a while ago right?
I was wondering.. what is the point of the Player Moderator function if you just reward it to those few people of the many who organise events? Because right now it is used as podium rather than a moderating function.
Imo the recent volunteers do not moderate anything but their own crowd (which they are too occupied with obv.), and should be rewarded a fancy title instead of a functional pmod crown..
Players that roam through each (dark) alley should be crowned, to (combined with their advanced knowledge of the game) hold back the gold sellers, pishing lurers and other scum that hit our community.

I distinguish 2 types of volunteers in-game, you only acknowledge one while the current community is in need of both. Shadows are now lurking in every city.

===

You make a fair point, and dealing with the sort of rule breaking you mention is important, the point I was trying to make is that reporting and being a sort of 'in game police force' is not 100% what P Mods are about.

P Mods can mute if they happen to come across serious rule breaking while carrying out their normal game play or being involved in the community.

:)

@Mod Stevew,

Nearly a year ago you promised the dutch community there qould come a new dutch Jagex mod soon, there came a vacancy etc. But... half a year later the vacancy disappeared, but there never appeared a brand new dutch Jmod.

What happened?:O The dutch community is curious...

===

We only had a few applicants for that role and it was taking a long time to find someone.

Since then we've had a good look at the team priorities and where we can add most value - and right now employing someone purely to support the Dutch community doesn't fit well with the overall aims - especially when we are deliberately tailoring almost everything we do in English so that other language communities can join in as well.

Naturally, we will continue to offer specialised language support for the translated communities of French, German and Portuguese.

We will leave the Dutch forums in place as we do recognise that the community is active, many of RuneScape's great clans are Dutch for example, but right here and now we do feel that in terms of specialised support, we need to stick to the key languages that are game translated.

1.
In regards to forum moderating: are there sections of this forum that have slacker rules specifically the Off Topic section of the HLF, and if this is the case is there any particular reason? I ask as I've seen certain enlightening images that suggest that may be the case.

2.
Another concern of mine, and from what I've seen others, is how are we to know if a J mod has looked into a query of a moderators actions. Yes we could take yours and the moderators word for it, but sadly people are very skeptical of this (myself included if I'm honest). Perhaps a post on said thread I mean if you are checking the thread a follow up would be nice and also state abusers of it would be harshly dealt with or something.

3.
Previously if I had a query about an action I would pop onto the Forum emergencies thread when a mod was active post my query wait 5-10 minutes and be told yes they made a mistake or you were a naughty boy.

4.
I spend most of my time on the Off Topic section of this forum and it has saddened me to see the community forced into exile so to speak. Is there any possibility that rules regarding sensitive subjects religion, science (evolution, cloning etc), politics and other subjects that occasionally cross over will be allowed (No harm in asking though I can predict the answer).

===

1.
Yes, all of the HLF has less strict rules then the regular forums. We also tend to allow a little slack in 'Rants' as it isn't publicly viewable and is, by definition, a place where people want to vent a bit.

2.
We do try to check threads that are highlighted to us but we do have other things to do as well! In our experience F Mods are pretty good at what they do, and we also do random sampling of F Mod actions even if they are not highlighted - so a rouge F Mod will be spotted eventually.

3.
Yes that is true .. it's now been replaced with the more efficient highlight system though. :)

4.
Hmmm I can understand someone from OT wanting that but let's be real about it - it would just lead to a bunch of inappropriate and offensive threads - I think the problems would outweigh any benefit by quite a big margin.

Are there any hints for players that are about to become moderators in either the forums or in game? How close is someone to becoming a mod :3 and does the number of years you've played this game have an impact?

===

There are no hints, you just check your messages one day and find the invite sitting there - :)

Time played is not that crucial - once you have a few months under your belt you are pretty much up for grabs!

This is a question to Mod SteveW, I noticed on your last Q&A thread and todays one that you mention that over reporting isn't that useful.

Could you give us a few examples of this?

On my end there isn't very much I do report anyway except gold farming adverts, that annoy me quite a bit, is this actually helpful or do you have other systems detecting this and perhaps my report on that is more in the way?

===

The web ad reports are certainly very useful - keep that up! The sort of reports that are probably better dealt with by the ignore lists are things like minor spam, goading, tripping the censor - that sort of thing.
