Hi scousy.

Jagex changed the login bot protection to "Google reCAPTCHA v3" recently, so it behaves somewhat differently to the previous system.

It's supposed to be better at detecting human input versus bots, and under normal circumstances it will do less of the clicking pictures things.

However, the 'improved' detection looks at more things, including using cookies and other information saved by the browser, so (for example) if you clear your cookies regularly, or have some tool that does that for you, then you might be challenged more often when logging in.
Glad to be of service :) (Powered by GPP™ - Share and Enjoy!)

jagex still enforcing CAPTCHA on their website when there is no restriction on the in game client, nor the companion app before it was removed

meanwhile we literally have 2 factor authentication enabled and no way to log in using 2fa?

The client is done using a custom network protocol and the UI is literally done with a custom interface, whilst you could make an autotyper that in general does the same thing, it's efficiency would be 1% of that which is possible via the web login that can be done thousands of times potentially without even opening a browser (unless Captcha).

2FA for web login is coming 2020.

the companion app could be used for the longest amount of time thru a web ui

the point is that this does not add any actual security, largely useless

Agreed! It's so irritating to bypass the bot check!
''Choose traffic light''! I do it but it continues to next one!
Time wasting! Why would bots even logging into the forums? To auto spam / bump threads?

In short it's dependant on how much you are willing to weaken the security of your browser.

It's useful to mitigate brute force attempts although I do understand from a design point of view why this is frustrating for legitimate users. The solution is to implement a 'remember me' function and allow users to remain logged in for a certain period of time. Low on bank space? Click here.
