fix this its bloody annoying the tittle character limit is to small omg, why put a limit at all makes no sense

There are many reasons why forums may limit the length in characters of a thread title.

One good reason, for example, is to maintain a consistent page layout. I'm sure you can guess what would happen if people were allowed to have titles as long as they like; not only would it enable and facilitate title-spam (ie. making titles unnecessarily long, or decorating titles unnecessarily with ASCII art, or making title that wrap-over many lines), but we'd see cases of people using the thread title for the bulk of the content in a thread, with the OP simply being used to direct people to read the thread title. It would also make navigation of the forum a pain, especially for mobile users.

Another good reason is technical limitations. I'm not sure whether the forums were made completely in-house, or whether a licensed forum back-end has been used. If the forum software was created externally, it will have some limitations in how it operates, and there's little Jagex can do except switch to a different provider at some point.

It was part of the legacy lay-out for this old forum software.

The same way that RSOF was initially developed for the 800x600 screen resolution of year 200x.

These days, with the standard 1080p monitor, there is a huge useless black blank space at the left and the right of the forum page. It is the legacy limit, we can only tolerate it until Jagex decides to fix it.

I wish the 2000 character limit on forum posts didn't exist, or was at least a little longer (5000 perhaps), or that the 2000 limit didn't count any of the bbcode text...

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.

I believe there needs to be limits, as there would be those that would abuse it. I like the idea of bbcodes not being included.

With a longer limit such a 5000 per post I believe better formating options would be needed to make the post more user friendly, such as you see when Jmods post. Personally I would like more formating options now.

Thread titles have a low limit because they're meant to be a short statement about the thread. And then the thread body is where the content goes.

I do think that it could be nicely increased to 40 ish (might have to do a little page styling to make it work nicely)...but 30 is fine still imo.

Post char limits are annoying because the counter is javascript and you'd have to write some weird formula to try to check for bbcodes (alongside the maxlength on the textarea which would also have to be adjusted through this function too) and then give back the number of characters the bbcode used up.

When submitting, it could parse the text, and remove the html, and then count the individual characters from there, but there's nothing simple on the user's end that could do such a thing.

, you're right about the BBCode counting. Best and/or easiest option would be to slightly increase character limit to compensate.
