The chair I sit on is hard. It is dark, except for a slowly swinging red light, casting deep shadows as it moves. In the distance, there is the faint sound of sirens.
Hundreds of people around me are bowed to the ground, afraid to look up. I stand, and those nearest to me cringe in fear, despite their best attempts to remain still. Somewhere in the back, a baby cries, and a black-clothed figure appears to take it away. The mother sobs brokenly but doesn't try to prevent the removal. Silence is soon restored.
I walk outside, ignoring the prostrate display of emaciated humanity around my throne. It is their day of worship - if I come back to any empty spaces, I will know they moved in my absence.
Outside the ever-present smell of ash and iodine fills my nostrils as I look out upon the crumbled buildings. The sun is barely visible as a dim glow among the black smoke - surprising that it should be seen at all, but by now there is little left to burn. In front, my statue is nearly complete - workers swarm around it, like ants crawling upon a massive tree.
