If Jagex had not given us free to play Old School Runescape in 2015, do you think Old School Runescape would be almost dead by now? I am sorry if this is a dumb question but I was just wondering what your guys's opinions are about this.

If F2P never came to OSRS, Bond would not be passed and most of the members paying with gp now would not be here. For sure, the "playerbase" would be very very low even if OSRS managed to survive.

I honestly doubt there would be much of a difference to be honest.

Those that enjoy the members game would continue to enjoy the members game. And if the concern is that people wouldn't be able to pay with bonds, bonds came to RS the same year that OSRS was released. Considering swapping was prevalent (despite some of us being very against it) since the start of OSRS, it wouldn't surprise me if those wanting to use bonds were already swapping cash over every few weeks to purchase them on RS.

Agreed.

Not only that but people were using bonds from RS3 for membership when old school launched (mems to the main game gave you mems to old school, without any additional cost) so I don't think it would have made any difference at all.

If they removed f2p even now, peeps would still play. They might play RS3 as a means to get bonds to pay for membership (or just continue the swapping AJ is talking about), but they'd still play. =)

It wouldn't be almost dead, but it wouldn't be as heavily populated either.

MTX, in the form of Bonds, were a necessary evil when the price was hiked up to $11. People unwilling to dish out 1-2 hours worth of pay at a minimum-wage job can justify "paying" for membership with an arduous time investment instead. I personally couldn't do it, week after week, month after month, because that would take all the joy out of actually playing the game, but to each their own.

Games with f2p mode have significantly more players than p2p ones. The latest major game, a real classic one too, which removed subscription, Lineage (or Lineage I, or Lineage Classic), showed absolutely that pattern.

Without a doubt, if there was no f2p in OSRS, it would definitely have a much lower "playerbase". However, Bond and the fact that Jagex doesn't intervene players from swapping RS3 and OSRS gp might mean OSRS would still be kept afloat by the free players who would go to RS3 and farmed gp there.

F2p has always been big thing in runescape. Ever since the beginning u have had ability to at least play f2p in limited area.

Runescape would not be dead, but all the people who dont believe or dont wanna buy before trying, would not be here. Same with younger population who cant afford subfee.
Remember, you are here for ever.

Definitely nowhere near as good as it's doing right now. We've gotten plenty of new players thanks to F2P and mobile.

This. I was F2P for a long time, but the draw of Mobile really made me want to be a member, so I made the move. I think a lot of newer players will say the same thing.
