So have an idea for a lore related/relying skill called Archaeology. What about that? The basics would be that the higher your archaeology skill is the more artefacts from back then you would find. The first tiers would allow you to find stuff from the Fifth Age or Fourth Age. The one above that would let you find content from the third age/god wars, above that the second age stuff and highest level 1st age stuff. You also need to dig or wander certain locations to find the stuff or any artefacts with chances depending on your archaeology level.

Things you will find will be ancient texts that tell you about the lore from back then, and may even contain blueprints to reconstruct an ancient armour, weapon or invention for use. New crafting, fletching, smithing and other new craftables unlock-able via discovering how to make them through the archaeology skill. Possibly being intertwined with the invention skill. The next feature would be similar to dungeoneering in that you can possibly break into secret places buried in the past, meeting any trapped beings or spirits from those times possibly.

Third feature would be player owned museums in which you can store or put your work up on display for other visiting players to see. You can also possibly dig up skeletons from runescape's graves to study or remains in archaeology, maybe a special device lets you see flashbacks or so on.

Furthermore you might be able to clone extinct/ancient creatures to unlock additional pets or summonable creatures.

This is only the first release of this thread so it might be reorganized. You will travel to various places and break into ancient ruins even if possible depending on level/timeline. The skill will be centred around recovering lost knowledge.

Idk, it sounds too.. Dungeoneering to me. Archaeology sounds more like a minigame or a quest thing, not so much a skill.

Don't get me wrong, the idea of digging up old tombs, ancient bones, and hidden enclaves in RS appeases the Adventurer/Lorehound in me to no end. I just don't see it being a skill.

Only then can they

Well also another feature would be discovering or unlocking the ability to craft new items unseen before in crafting, smithing, invention, fletching and so on. Not just combat items but skill related ones such as say learning to upgrade your tools. It would be centred around uncovering lost knowledge or the remnants of long-gone civilizations/settlements + races extinct in the god wars. Say btw 90 archaeology or more would enable you to find elder God related knowledge or stuff.

Maybe it can be paired with invention too, or + unlock-able pets would be available too. Mostly you can excavate stuff related to Hallowvale/Third and Second Age Saradominist civilization plus Armadylean(Would be in Kandarin), Bandosian, as well as Serenist/Elven civilization and the former Zarosian empire. Also maybe translate ancient texts for xp, and the excavation processes will also give xp as irl they are not that quick either. They take time.

Meantime for Armadylean civilization related stuff or ruins they can be found in Kandarin or Archaeology could be merged with the Citadel system for the floating islands.

Dear God no. We don't need more skills. We don't need to hide lore behind grinding and other skill requirements. I'd rather not further disinterest the player base from lore. Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

That is why so few do them. They don't want to bore themselves with grinding.

Heavy requirements leads to a lack of interest. A lack of interest leads to low activity. Low activity leads to a low return on investment for Jagex. As such, we don't get as many quests as we should.
